1383.0. "Where has all the Software gone?" by KERNEL::BLAND (Norman Bland 833 3797 CSC, Basingstoke) Mon Oct 25 1993 15:01

    Hi guys, Two questions.

o - We use to have a number of archives where we could copy shareware
or public domain software - where have they all gone? I tried numerous
directories found in the notesfile without success.

o - Sometime ago I copied DBWRITER version 1.0 and gave it a try - it
looked very promising. I understand that it is now at version 1.8 -
maybe even later now. Has anyone got a pointer to this version please?

    Thanxs in anticipation

I think the answer to your first question on where all the public
archives have gone is pretty easy. Some of the people have left as
a result of TFSO or on their own. The company has gone from about
130000 people down to 90000 (by last quarters report) over a couple of
years. Another reason is Many people have given up on the Atari
platform, and moved onto platforms where the machines are supported
by the manufacturer, or by shear size of the installed base.

In any event, there are better more stable archives on the internet
which you can access. I'm sure there are a number of notes in here
on how to access them.

Hi,

I was curious as to where all the USERS were? I was quite
dissapointed by te nummber of people who checked out my
Motif-like GUI platform for the ST, posted a few notes
	back...

The internet [users] showed some interest, but I think I
would be best off (based on the interest) to consider the
[insert best selling platform here] as a platform to develop
	for...

John, if you are referring to CONNECT, then I have it. I have built a
floppy with the English only and other necessary files. I have fired it
up and it looks very professional. I do not have a MODEM yet but
shortly I will. I have been attempting to correct some of the errors
in the grammar and spelling mistakes in the Help file (not got far
yet). I think I will definitely be paying my registration fee but I
want to try it with a MODEM first of course.

    Hello Norman,

    > I have been attempting to correct some of the error in the grammar
    > and spelling mistakes in the Help file (not got far yet).

Would you be so kind and send me a copy of the corrected help file when
you are done with it? I'm sure the author of the help file (and english
manual coming soon) will be thankful for any correction.

Is anyone interested in a (similar high quality) backup software for
SCSI-Streamers? I could upload a new version of GEMAR to my directory
tomorrow. The software works with many different streamers (including DEC
TZ30) on the ST, TT and Falcon. I am using it quite a while and have
not found any serious problems yet. The only drawback may be that the
software and help system are in german language, and I don't know
whether an english version is available.

    Regards,

      Peter.

    re .1

my archive on UFRCS1 had to be deleted because of reorganisation and
the move of the whole unit to another location. I made a tape with
the newest Atari Shareware and PD software (about 150 MB compressed
files) and about 3000 cliparts in the *.IMG B/W format. As soon as
I find a way to copy that tape (DC600, SYTOS backup from PC) onto
the VAX via Pathworks, I'll post the location of the archive in 9.*

    re .3

I wanted to try out your GUI, but as most Atari users in Europe I'm
working with a monochrome monitor and so was not able to run that
    program...

re. -5

Hello Peter,

I am very interested to get a backup software for SCSI-Streamers. There is an
empty place in my ATARI-Tower. Would you please give me a hint, where I can get
GEMAR?

Thank you

re. -3

Sorry John,

I had the same problem as Bernd. The most ATARI-people in Germany is using the
monochrome monitor or a grafic extension like VGA.

1383.10Improved HELP file for CONNECT 2.44KERNEL::BLANDNorman Bland 833 3797 CSC, BasingstokeWed Jan 19 1994 22:0327
    Hi Peter Eckel,

    re .5 and CONNECT 2.44.

I am close to having a much improved HELP file for this great piece of
software. That's not to say I will not attempt to improve it even further.
Have you got a node/directory to which I can copy it to? Can you then
make it available to the author over the net?
Here's the main areas I have attacked. BTW, the HELP have improve
considerably since 2.20; I hope what I have done has improved it more.

    1) Spelling mistakes
    2) Grammatical errors
    3) Dubious liasons of two words
    4) Duplicate adjoining words in sentences
    5) Duplicate text
    6) CoSHy help re-organised - easier to update
    7) Reformatting of text to more or less equalise line length
    8) Changed some abbreviations and words like 'don't' to do 'not'

The overiding motivation was to make it more readable and easier to
    understand.
If some of the changes are not to the authors liking, then I can simple
    change them back.

    Norman

1383.11Tnx, Copy it to EDDF10EDDF10::ECKELNo sports.Fri Jan 21 1994 11:4815
    Hello Norman,

thank you very much for your effort to improve the english help file.
I'll forward it to Wolfgang as soon as I'll have it; to copy it over to
me either use the decnet default of my cluster (EDDF10::) or, still
    better, copy it to EDDF10::USER_EDDF10:[ECKEL.PUBLIC.ATARI.WRITEABLE].

In the latter case there is a small possibility that you fail due to
exceeded quota, you can use the decnet default then.

Maybe we should open a CoNnect-Topic.

    Regards,

      Peter.
