Start magazine may likely fold this year (you read it here first!) according
to my sources. Too bad but other journals like AtariUser will take its place.
I admit I'll miss Start because it was a dependable source of additional income
via programs and articles I submitted but there are other ways too.
In box stock form, I still consider any MacII a more powerful, capable and
utilitarian machine than any Atari, including the TT. But then again, there is
a considerable price difference in the basic hardware. I originally bought my
MacIIsi because I was fed up with my perception of Atari's mishandling of their
developer base (of which I am one). It was rather an "I'll show them" kind of
impulse reaction. Besides, I've always wanted one and with Apple's lowered
prices I could almost afford it.
What I did not count on was my reluctance to completely sever my long term ties
with Atari hardware. I also did not understand the totally different mindsets
of Mac vs ST users. My experience with Macheads led me to believe that as a
group they are individualists, while ST users thrive on interpersonal
relationships arising out of the use of their machines. These are only my
perceptions, folks, but that's the way I experienced it. Mac users like things
neat, clean and simple. ST users love to see just how far they can "push the
envelope" (thanks Dave Small) with 22 different graphics/sound/accelerator/
emulator, etc boards hanging out of their machine held together with baling wire
and electricians tape. This would give a true Machead nightmares!
So when a financial need combined with a willing buyer for my Mac appeared on
my doorsetep, I reacted with a typical Atari user's reaction... impulse SELLING.
I'll get another "real" Mac someday, I'm sure. But only when my finances allow
me to have my choice of Atari's as well because heck, ...
... Atari machines *are* more FUN!
