275.0. "Commercial VT Emulators " by BIRGP1::QUINN () Tue Oct 18 1988 08:34

    I'm new to the world of ATARIS so forgive my ignorance.

    We are putting together a proposal for a customer based around a
    VAX/VMS system. They have a number of "ATARI Mega ST 2" (if that
    is the right name) they want to connect to the VAX. Are there any
    VT terminal emulators comercially available in the U.K.

    		Cheers

275.2Anything except for WHACK!RDGENG::KEANETue Oct 18 1988 09:3715

    re 275.0 and 275.1

    Hi, whatever you suggest for VT emulation to customers do NOT repat
    NOT, suggest WHACK, that is NOT for consumption outside Digital.

    There are a large number of PD emulators and also I have seen
    commercial emulators. One that springs to mind is "VT220 term" by
    Michtron (I think), The obvious benefit of a Commercial package
    is that the customers should get support !!.

    It is gratifying to see that customers are choosing good machines
    (megas) as terminals. Why they should want to hang a slow file handler,
    (the Vax) on them is a bit peculiar!!

275.3UnitermNORGE::CHADTue Oct 18 1988 10:3724
  I think the consensus would support Uniterm hands down (unless you are
  a priviliged DEC person with Whack) as *THE* VT emulator of choice. I
  know on USENET et al and at school where I was that nobody used anything
  else. Simon Poole in Switzerland is continually (was?) 'supporting'
  it and it has TEXed documentation (~70+ pages) so it looks professional.

  Check on USENET. It is also archived here but I don't know what policy is
  in regards to taking a copy off of the enet.

  Simon's address is (was):

      Simon Poole
      Bahnhofstr. 51b

      Switzerland

Good luck

Now, on the other hand, you could get Sowtware Serices to SELL them Whack...
275.5A few commercial programs...LDP::WEAVERLaboratory Data ProductsTue Oct 18 1988 20:578
    Atari makes a barebones VT100 emulator, in a cartridge, I say
    barebones, I don't know that for a fact, but at around $24 U.S.
    I can't imagine it being loaded with features. Eidersoft sells
    an emulator that I believe was either developed in the U.K. or
    England, I forget which. There is another package called AnsiTerm,
    not sure who publishes that.

275.6Also Flash...LDP::WEAVERLaboratory Data ProductsTue Oct 18 1988 20:585
    I forgot to mentions Flash, which supports Xmodem/Ymodem and the
    SHADOW accessory, that is available from Antic, not sure if they
    have U.K. connections, but I would assume so.

    Re: flash and possibly others.

    My copy of flash states in large letters that it is a VT100 emulator.

    However it is an ANSI terminal emulator. It does NOT support most
    of the DEC VTT100 escape sequences. I have seen at least one
    other emulator which misleads the buyer in this way.

    Be careful.
