77.0. "MS-DOS/TOS disk compatibility mode?" by DELNI::GOLDSTEIN (Follow flock, become lampchop) Thu May 05 1988 17:08

    I'm looking for a way to format disks so that they're usable by
    BOTH MS-DOS and the ST. So far, everything's had a "gotcha".

    MS-DOS and TOS use the same disk format except that MS-DOS uses
    a boot sector while TOS handles that sector differently, but needs
    a RANDOM serial number in a specific spot. Now TOS can read ONE
    MS_DOS disk, but won't detect media_change because all MS_DOS disks
    (from the same MS-DOS formatter) will appear to have the same,
    nonrandom serial number. This really gets ugly.

    I hear that a PD program called IBMFMT can do an MS-DOS boot sector
    with random TOS serial. Does anyone have it? Also, does anyone
    know if I can take an MS-DOS disk and use Tiny Tool's disk editor
    to insert a hand-generated random number? Other ideas?

77.1IBMFMT.C availableMILRAT::WALLACESat May 07 1988 04:497
    Turns out all I have is the C source for IBMFMT, it is now available
    from:	MILRAT::DISK$USER3:[WALLACE.PUBLIC.ST]IBMFMT.C

    It was written for Megamax-C (has inline assembly code) by Moshe
    Braner.

77.2DC FORMAT ANY GOOD?RDGENG::KEANEMon May 09 1988 12:2212

    Hello Fred

    		I seem to remember a formatter called "DCFormat" that
    was kicking around the net that had a box marked MSDOS format on
    it. I dont know what that did I never had occassion to use it. I
    think I still have a copy of it around somewhere if I have I will
    maill you with the info of where it is

    Cheers Pat

77.3IBMFMT V1.1 sounds like the winner, wherever it isDELNI::GOLDSTEINResident curmudgeonFri May 13 1988 13:574
    I don't have a Megamax compiler... I did find an executable image
    of IBMFMT; however, it was the defective V1.0! I'll keep looking
    for a V1.1, but if anyone sees one, could you let me know?

77.4IBMFMT, lost and foundMILRAT::WALLACEMon May 16 1988 01:369
    In the process of re-labeling some floppies this weekend I came
    across IBMFMT.PRG V1.1 (the one the 200% PLUS version), the latest
    version I believe. It is in an ARC file in,
    	MILRAT::DISK$USER3:[WALLACE.PUBLIC.ST]IBMFMT.ARC

    I haven't used this so maybe someone who does use it can let us
    know if it works ok.

    Hi I have seen that you have moved node to OLDMTR since this entry
    was done. I tried to find IBMFNT.ARC in
    OLDMTR::$!$DUA8:[WALLACE.PUBLIC.ST] but it could not be found at
    that location.

    Where can I find it? Does somebody else have it on the network?

    Cheers from a newcomber in the Atari area.

    /Stefan

77.8IBMFMT HOW?WOTVAX::KENTMon Nov 18 1991 10:0114

    OK I am trying to make IBMFMT.TOS work for a pal of mine. I downloaded
    it and it seemed to produce the TOS file ok from the ARC file. When I
    clik on the TOS file It just starts and then stops again no Dialogue
    bus nothing. How do i make this thing run?

    I notice that on PRNSYS in Jeff's [.st] folder there is ibmfmt.txt but
    Ican't get access to this due to access problems.

77.9May the .tos file is corruptYNOTME::WALLACEMon Nov 18 1991 13:367
When you I run IBMFMT it clears the screen then puts a bunch of text at the
top of the screen (program name, author, etc...) then asks you for disk size
(if I recall correctly) and finaly asks for a drive letter.

Sounds like maybe your copy of the program is corrupt somehow.

77.10STill crazy etc...WOTVAX::KENTMon Nov 18 1991 16:0912

    Well... DO you have a version that definitely runs somewhere on the
    net.

    As you may have seen from an entry elsewhere I am having those old
    downloading problems at the moment...

    And I thought I'd got through these problems by now.

77.11DCFormat works OKEICMFG::BURKEJim Burke, @UFCFri Nov 22 1991 07:255
    I use DC-Format for formatting PC-readable disks (720K). Never had any
    problems there.
