    Hmm. I guess if this is gonna be the favorites note, I'll give my
    two cents, so here goes.

    1)Dave Gilmour
    2)Jimi Hendrix
    3)Randy Rhodes
    4)Alex Lifeson
    5)Erik Jay (only 16, but wait, he'll show up!)
    6)Syd Barrett
    7)Robert Smith
    8)George Lynch
    9)Yngwie Malmsteen (Twangy Sixstring, WingWang FretStein, etc,etc...)
    10)Eddie Van Halen
    11)Steve Howe

    Jeez, now I'd have to think. I don't enjoy thinking, it gives me
    a headache, so I'll leave it at that.

    12 The guy in Captain Beefhart (was it El Finger Ling?)

    There's a dozen for the pot - all electric. Acoustic is more tricky.

    	Winged eel used to play with the Mothers of Invention, I think
    his real name was Eric Edberg, I am not sure though. Ry Cooder was
    the Captains first lead guitarist.

    I have to add a new one, I heard him last night he's a Windham Hill
    boy.

    	Thanks for the info, I was scratching my head all day trying
    to think of Adrian Vandenberg. Say you like Michael Hedges man
    of Twenty fingers. He's incredible, Ackerman is the producer of
    his last albumn.
82.8BAXTA::BOTTOM_DAVIDFri Nov 07 1986 19:348
    If you're going to invest in a Micheal hedges album, avoid the one
    where he covers "All along the watchtower" this album sucks......
    Unfortunately this is the only Hedges I've ever heard, I won't waste
    any more of my money on him again until I hear something worth
    listening to.

82.9Joe Pass?JELLO::CONROYFri Nov 07 1986 19:4315

    What, no Joe Pass? He's the only guy I've ever heard who could
    play with Oscar Peterson and make the guitar stand on equal
    footing with the piano.

    And speaking of Jazz, how about Herb Ellis.
    And Johnny Smith - absolute best ever! (anyone aspiring to be a
                       guitar player should listen to this guy)

    blues/rock - Johhny Winter (when he stays away from that trash with
                                Rick Derringer and plays the blues)

    John Williams

    etc, etc.

    7) George Benson
    8) Allan Holdsworth
    9) Philip Catherine
    10)Jeff Beck

    These are in no particular order except that Pat Martino is definitely
    my favorite. To me, he plays over the most difficult compositions
    and flows thru the changes effortlessly. I hereby nominate his
    album "Joyous Lake" as ...

    RE: .10 Sorry I didn't respond sooner. Hope you see this.
             Johhny Smith recorded with a trio mostly I think.
             Just Guitar bass and drums. He recorded on Verve and
             Roost. I don't know when his last record came out
             but it was a long time ago.

    I'll take a look at the records I have at home and see if I can
    put a little more detail here.
    There is one record I would recommend off the top of my head.
    "The man with the Blue Guitar", all solo guitar. Really mellow
    stuff, great arrangements.

    Bob

    thanks. If he recorded on Verve, maybe some of the stuff is or
    will soon be reissued. I've been searching for something under
    his name but without luck so far.

82.17Ever Heard of Robert Cray?MINDER::KENTTue Dec 23 1986 13:569

    Hi New noter here from Manchester U.K.

    I noticed nobody mentioned Robert Cray. Blues guitarist on the lines
    of Clapton but not quite as tuneful but a he has a good "cooking" band.

    Have you not heard of this guy yet in the states?

    					Paul Kent.

    I have. he played in boston about a month ago, but didn't see him.
    He has released "Smoking Gun" as his first single. not bad. Clapton
    speaks highly of him, I've heard.

82.19BAXTA::BOTTOM_DAVIDTue Dec 23 1986 15:477
    Robert Cray had another single a couple of years ago...it's just
    that MTV finally noticed him.....I own "False accusations" the next
    to last album, it's good. Clapton raves up Robert Cray, claims he's
    the best thing to happen to blues in years. He's good and worth
    checking out.

82.20Have a Cray DayMINDER::KENTWed Dec 24 1986 06:279

    Yep that was my view also. In fact Mr Cray is responsible for me
    starting to play again after a couple of years "playing" with Synths
    and Midi. I only have the Smoking Gun album so-far. His playing
    is so damn simple. But so effective.

    					Paul.

    			BTW he uses Strats (exclusively).

    Eric Clapton and Dave Gilmour in the list.

I was listening to some records last night, and realized there is a
guitarist I like a lot that no one really seems to talk about, so
I thought I'd put in my $.02 worth.

Rod Price - lead/slide guitarist for Foghat

Whenever anyone mentions rock slide guitar, it is always guys like
D. Allman or Clapton or Mick Taylor mentioned. But I would have to
say that (IMO) Rod Price was just as good as these guys. Some os
his slide work, like on "Stone Blue", is really rockin'!

    You know, I have every BLACKFOOT album ( on vinyl ) EXCEPT
    " No Reservations "....  Could never find it...even in " used "
    record stores.

    How much would you want for one ?
