2044.0. "Pick Preferences" by PSYLO::WILSON (All of Paris giggles with flags...) Wed Nov 28 1990 10:53

I've finally found a pick that I really like for playing my 6-string
acoustic: a Jim Dunlop .88 mm nylon. Nylon seems to produce the best
    results for me.

Its edges are tapered, and that seems to help somehow, but I'm not sure
    how.

Anyone else like JD picks? .88 seems to be a popular gauge.

I have yet to find a really satisfactory pick for playing my electric.
Again, I use a .88, but in some brand called "Tortex."

Some people aren't fussy over picks, but I am.

I found that the Dunlop Tortex picks last the longest! I've tried
many others and have found those to be mostly inferior for my needs.
I had a local music store order me the "orange" (don't remember the
guage) ones. They direct-ordered the picks because the distributors
didn't even carry them. I use these picks for bass.
I found that no matter what kind of nylon picks I use, they seem
to break all too soon. RIP Tortois shells...

I'll use Jazz II's if the III's are no where to be found, but the III's

2044.8Dunlop Jazz picks are great!GOES11::G_HOUSENot a problemWed Nov 28 1990 14:4426
Woah! Funny to hear about so many others using the Jazz IIIs. That's
the size/shape I use and it seems like everyone I know gives me a lot
    of flack about 'em.

I've been using the Dunlop heavy Tortex Jazz picks for quite awhile now
and love them. I like the smaller shape and the Tortex material lasts
virtually forever. That's not a big deal since I've never broken a
pick in my life, but I tore up the edges of the plastic picks I used to
use (Fender heavys) a lot. I also like the texture on the Tortex
    picks.

I used the Jazz IIIs before going to the Tortex version of the same
thing and liked them a lot, maybe better then the Tortex ones. Problem
was that I couldn't FIND them anywhere. Musicians Friend has the
Tortex version for $2.00 a dozen and I figured at that price with good
availability like that, those would do.

Here's a tip for you Jazz III users. Take a piece of fairly fine
sandpaper and angle the flat sides of the pick slightly around the tip
so that the point is pointed from all four directions. If you taper
this in, it gives the pick a real streamlined shape and it flows on the
strings a little better. Not that *I'm* a real speed picker or
anything, but it even helped me a little, so some of you string burners
might see a little improvement. It only takes a minute to try it.

2044.9THE Pick For Heavy Metal?AQUA::ROSTDrink beer: Live 6 times longerWed Nov 28 1990 14:4610
For electric guitar, I use a pick called "Hotlicks", it's made out of
copper. They come in gauges....sheesh, I think I'm using .009s???

They don't wear out, and they're great for harmonics. On an acoustic,
    they're too much.

They may be no longer made, I bought a package of six about five years
ago, I'm still on my first one...!!!

I was using the green dunlop tortex jazz-style picks for a while.
I like the small size but changed to these black heavy ones
with the Gibson logo on 'em. They're much harder to see than
the green ones but they don't warp like the tortex ones do.
2044.13PELKEY::PELKEYLife, a state of cluster transitionWed Nov 28 1990 16:4018
I happen to be fairly fussy about picks.

I use the small jazz (medium thickness) picks..

Mostly Fenders, but the make really don't matter, however the thinkness
tends to vary fmro the different manufactures.

I've used these picks for what seems an eternity.

I use traditional size guitar picks too, but very rarely, and even then,
only with acoustic. (when they're handy, and the other picks are in
the next room..)

For me the small picks allow me the best attack and harmonic capabilities.

A regular size pick in my hand feels like a throw pillow.
2044.14I'm just a warped kind of guyGOES11::G_HOUSENot a problemWed Nov 28 1990 16:458
That's right, I should have mentioned that the Tortex Jazz picks always
seem to warp. I actually kind of like the warp, since it kind of wraps
around your finger a little bit. It doesn't seem to affect the tip.

I've used the green ones (medium) too, but prefer the heavier pink
    ones.

There's another Dunlop pick out that is the same size as Jazz picks
but there made out of some kind of clear purple plastic kinda
sorta stuff, when I first used them I liked them but then
the pick started to wear away and created an edge that kept
on getting caught on the 1,2,3, strings. Cool looking but
            they were trash bait.

they're around .9 mm... I spent one summer trying all different kinds of picks

Odd, I don't like the tortex picks after a while; they have a better feel when

You could easily shim window sashes and door jams with these babies.

This dude would go through E and G strings (yup E strings) with reckless

I have a couple of M'ind picks. They produce a very soft, attack-less
sound that I don't find appealing.

I also still own a half-dozen real tortoiseshell picks from the early
sixties. Despite the hype about Tortex, nothing I have ever used
compares to these for a stiffness to thickness ratio. I used to use
them for playing surf music--they produce an incredibly strong sound
    with little effort.

Being socially responsible, I use Fender Heavy picks instead. I buy
about two gross a year--I hate it when they lose their edge.

I'd like to try a copper pick, but I'm too afraid to scratch my
    guitars up with em.

I have tons of differant types of picks at home (mostly heavy normal
shape, ie: Fender heavy). The only differances I find between plastic
picks, and nylon, is that the plastic picks tend to crack and break
(after years of abuse) and the nylon ones seem to last forever. Nylon
picks tend to have a little grip built onto them which makes them
easier to hold onto. Years ago there were picks with little cork rings
to hold onto, and some others with a small hole drilled in the middle
also designed to prevent dropping em.

I don't make a really big deal over guitar picks but I like em rigid.

I like the Dunlop black nylons - 1mm, I think (heavy). They also have a
series that's made from harder nylon so it's stiffer.

I sometimes make grips for my picks by dipping the grip end into that liquid
rubber kinda stuff that's sold mainly for rubberizing tool handles. Works
pretty well, but causes me to change my technique in subtle ways. Don't know
if I like it or not.

Ok, ok, ok! Maybe I missed it last time. I'm going to give the 'ole jazz III
another chance. For 2 weeks I promise not to use anything but jazz III's (I've
got to go buy a couple unless Greg wants to hand some over the cube wall!). If
I can't get used to 'em in two weeks, I can't get used to them.

I'll post my results in +2 weeks or so.

Last night a bought a bunch of new picks to experiment with. I bought
some Jazz III, some of the picks that look like shark fins, and some
little thick picks called "stubby". The "Stubby's" are only available
in 1mm, 2mm, and 3mm. The guy in the store said they were like a nylon
version of the old "Stone" picks. I've never seen anything as thick
and rigid as these little babies (except maybe those horrid felt picks
    used on autoharp).

Besides, it was beginning to feel like playing air guitar with the thing.

Ok, trial period's over. I've been using Jazz III's for a few weeks now
(lots of hours on them due to the holidays!) and I like 'em better than anything
I've used previously.

I'm hooked, never to go back to those *huge* blue tortex thingys I used to use.

FWIW: I noticed that alternate picking improved fairly quickly. However, at
first I was frustrated with sweep picking techniques. I couldn't get those
little picks to sweep nice-n-neat. But that came with a few more hours of use.

It's hard to explain exactly what I like better about these picks. It has to do
with their "feel" when picking across the strings. Part of it has to do with
the material they're made of, which likes to glide across the strings rather
than getting "hung up".

I don't think I can pick any faster with these picks, but I do feel as though
my (alternate) picking is more accurate. I tend to be less tense during very
challenging passages, etc. And that's got to be good for technique in general.

Try 'em you'll like 'em.

steve, who now uses jazz III's exclusively.

Geez, I even tried 'em out (jazz picks) and I've got to admit that it
seems to help my alternate picking too. Like Jerry said, they look
like throat lozenges, but EJ (in his video) uses small stubbies, so
it must be cool ;^). Also, EJ says that it reduces pick noise because
of the smoother, rounded edges. After a few times, they even felt
good. I didn't think I could use 'em for chordin', but I was wrong.

Not really. I used the Fender teardrop heavies for awhile just before

are more of a small rounded triangle kind of shape rather then the

Make sure you get the black (or red) Dunlop Jazz IIIs. I think the material is
real important here. The size and shape can be duplicated, but the combination
of size, shape, thickness, and material is what makes these work.

If you can't get a hold of them call Walt at Rice Music in Colorado Springs:

			(719) 634-3717

He can probably order a gross for you and ship 'em east. Or, he can tell
you who his distributor is and you can go from there. I doubt he'd want to
send 4 picks to you, but he might so you should ask.

If you only want *one* to try out, send me a SASE and I'll plop a genuine

tone department. It's difficult to get a sharp attack with them. I think it's
more important with the stuff I do. I've been using them for warmup. I'll have
the other guitarist try 'em out, he likes heavies.

I'm really sold on Fender Mediums. Best thing I ever did was chuck that thin.
Heavies feel numb. Without some kind of spring to it, I really can't "feel"

I'll separate these into two categories:

Lead: Obviously the heavies have a sharp attack. I find that with
my style, however, I like to hold the pick against the string and
maybe build some tension on it before I let it go. This makes it alot
easier for me to control dynamics and phrasing. The heavies make
a little clink sound when I use them for this. Not only this, but
I find I get a fatter sound out of a medium, which clears the
string quite easily. On fast runs it can be a bit clumsy because
of it's size. I have to be careful I have the pick positioned
properly.

Rhythm. More than one string and the heavies can really bog you
down in terms of attack. On accented chords, I like to flick my
wrist along with the finger movement to get a really sharp
attack. It took me a little while to get used to a medium for
doing this. This kind of attack is crucial for chords that only
use a few strings. When I play rhythm, I use all the joints in my
arm to squeeze in dynamics and a heavy requires too much
precision for this.

Alot of it really depends on your style.

I've been trying out these d'addario picks that are both small
and medium. My lead playing already likes it. My rhythm is still
deciding.

                                                        John.

I don't know if they have them in stock now, but Rice Music here in the
Springs carries Dean Markley strings so they might also have their

I'VE FOUND MY IDEAL PICK!!! After years of messing around trying to
find the perfect pick for my style,I was given one by a fellow Scottish
noter,( thanx,Staynz) that I immediately felt right with.
It's made by "Pick Boy",and is 1.00mm *ceramic*!! It is Soooo
clean, with just the right amount of rigidity.Up until now,my speed has
always been limited by my right hand, but on trying this pick on my
acoustic,I just took off.The major difference is,with it's lack of
flexibility, the tip is always *exactly* where you want it after
bouncing off one string to pick the next.
My wife noticed the difference straight off,as I switched from my
previous favorite pick to the new one.The only worry is the side
effects.Like, will it wear thro' my strings?
Now I've got to find a supplier, cos this one's tied to the guitar
    in case I lose it.

    re: Pickboy Ceramic

I bought one of those when I was in Mass. last week. Not because I
liked it really, but I thought the idea of having a wierd ceramic pick
was interesting. I used it a little and liked it, but after having
used the Jazz III picks for a couple of years now, I couldn't get used
to the large size (ok, normal size, but it was big to me). I just got
it for the novelty value. I did notice that it produced a good tone
from Alan's acoustic that I was playing.

I also picked up some of the Dunlop Stubby picks to see what they were
like. I got one of each of the different thicknesses (1mm, 2mm, 3mm).
The 3mm is totally unplayable for me, too thick. I liked the 1mm, but
it seemed to flex a little more then I like. Plus it's clear, what
kind of STUPID company makes a clear pick? You can never find it if
you drop it! Anyway, I liked the 2mm the best of the bunch but it
still seemed to flex or absorb the string vibration or something. I
got a lot stronger tone from Alan's acoustic with the Pickboy Ceramic
then I could with any of these.

Then I loaned the 2mm to Buck to play for a few minutes and he tore the
damn thing up, so I guess it wasn't too sturdy!

So to sum up my acessment, I'm staying with my old standby Dunlop Jazz
III's. The Stubbies felt good at first, but they didn't seem to have
the rigidity I like in a pick and didn't make a good solid tone.

As a long time Fender pick player, I never really considered anything
else until a while back when this topic first mentioned the Jazz III.
Well I did experiment some until I came across a pick a few weeks
ago that works much better for me than anything else. I got hold of
these Dunlop "Big Stubby" picks. They come in three guages, 1,2, & 3mm.
They're the same triangular shape as the traditional Fender style
however the edges are round beveled so that the string just slips off the
pick. The middle of the pick has a round indentation where the Logo is
so that you can get a grip on it.

I use the 3 mm for my electric picking and the 1 mm for 6 string acoustic.
For my twelve stringer I stay pretty much with a Fender thin or med
pick for a clicking percussive effect as I play chords.

Daddy's (among others I'm sure) these picks. Try one. For a half a buck
at risk, you might be glad you did. It's definiteley made a difference
    in my playing.

I don't know about a "big" Stubbie, but I tried some of the regular
Dunlop Stubbies awhile back and didn't like 'em. They're a small
shape, kind of like a Jazz III, but made of some kind of clear plastic
material. They felt weird and didn't hold up to picking abuse (by
    Buck) very well...

Yeah, I have this clear Stubbie and I was wondering WTF I got it from?!

Greg House!! Now I remember!! Anywho, the texture of them is
different. While I sort of liked the pointy tip for rhythm work, the
smooth plastic made the pick move around in my hand, and I lost my
control of it very quickly. The JIII's are rougher and easier to hold
    onto and control (imho).

Also, as gh said, you can pick slide tile the cows come home with a
JIII and never get one of those 'string indents' in the plastic...I
don't know what they're made of, but they last forever and ever!!

They are a "jazz" pick... I never noticed a huge loss of brightness
when using them. Probably 'cause lots of my rig is geared toward
"bright". But I was using Dunlop Tortex picks before, and these are
    fairly similar.

Greg, I hear ya. I've tried the Dunlop Tortex too, and remember
having a similar complaint with them. I guess I have to go on record
as a dedicated Fender Heavy man (straight tortoise, or white for
those formal occasions). I started using these because that's what
I've used for years on bass, so I always had em around and they felt
good in my hand. I've tried a lot of other picks but nothing gets quite
    the same sound for me.

Pick slides ? I use my finger nails on my right hand for that - they
tend to be more resiliant than picks.

2044.153Aluminium (Teck) picks ...?MVSUPP::SYSTEMDave Carr 845-2317Fri May 15 1992 11:2313
Has anyone tried "Teck Picks" ?

I've seen these advertised in Guitar Player. They are aluminium and appear
to be teflon coated, with a number of holes drilled through to increase
grip.
So far they are not available here in the UK, but the distributors
(J Hornby Skewes, Leeds) say they'll be in the shops in about a month.

I am interested in trying some of these. I currently use the very small
'teardrop' shaped Heavy picks (Gibson and Peavey mainly), but I find that
these wear out fairly quickly (my duff technique usually wears a hook shape
into the end of the point).

2044.154Could probably mar your guitar finish in short order as wellGOES11::G_HOUSEUnder my wheelsWed May 20 1992 00:4810
I haven't tried the Tek picks, but they do look kind of interesting.
My only problem with a pick like that is that they are more costly then
most picks and I have a tendancy to lose them. However with the holes
in 'em, I guess you could put 'em on a keychain or something to help
    prevent loss.

For a durable heavy teardrop shaped pick, I really like the Dunlop Jazz
III's. I've never worn one out (lost a bunch of 'em though).

2044.155bright and dull sounding picksSTRAT::JENSENTone == touchThu May 28 1992 16:0525
I've wanted to try the tek picks too, and I will if I ever run across
them in my local GTS store. I want a blue one. I've used metal picks
before, but didn't like them. They were kind of scratchy sounding.
Now, if these things are highly polished (or coated with teflon), maybe
    that would make a difference.

As for JIII's being a bit dull sounding. That could be. I've always
associated brightness of a pick with the following (in no particular
    order):

        1. Thickness (at the point hitting the string)
thick = dull thin = bright
        2. Hardness
soft = dull hard = bright
        3. Smoothness (at the point hitting the string)
smooth = dull rough = bright (more easily generates
                                                harmonics)

JIIIs are relatively thick and pretty smooth, which would tend to make
them dull sounding. You might try a small nail file or emery board on
the pick to sharpen them up a bit. That should make the pointy side a
little thiner and the pick a little rougher. And, if I'm not full of
sh*t, should make the thing sound a bit brighter.

I used to use a little sandpaper on mine to sharpen up the edge. Made
'em slide on the strings a little better. I sort of gave up on doing
it later though and just use them stock. I think I remember reading
that suggestion from someone in here.

Sounds like you better fix the angle you hold your pick at, dude! I'm
working on this. A recent analysis by Stevie Jensen revealed this as a

on it, I'm finding that it's improving my tone and clarity of notes
    already.

You should be holding el picko parallel to the string, rest the palm
heel of your hand on da bridge (fingers should not touch the guitar al
la George Lynch) and the when picking, movement should NOT come from your
arm - thats what I was taught but I still can't pick quicker than a snails

If you prefer as smaller size then go for the "old" 5 pence.

Actually, Tony, they are available in the U.K. It just seems that no one sells
them! I found a stash at Modern Music, in the Butts Centre in Reading. Just
goes to show that there is something good to be said for Reading after all. Not
only that, but they stocked them in black and hot pink!
