2962.0. "Boston / Tom Scholz" by COMET::DURHAM () Wed Aug 10 1994 11:53

    Boston Fans -

Any inputs on the new Boston LP?

I think the new album is pretty damn good. The first Boston album
is going to be hard to top though. Tom Scholz is still kicking
pretty good. I like his style of song writing.

I got the tape on loan from someone who bought it and HATED it.

Basically, I like it. The sound is still undeniably Boston, and has
basically not changed much since 1975. No new ground here sonically
    speaking.

But, I do like the writing, and the playing is there. The new
SInger(s) sound enough like Brad Delp not to really care (further
proving I think that SOUND comes from the processing/mixing, not the
source). Not sure how I feel on the overt political messages contained
in the liner notes, but I give credit to Tom S. for standing up to what
he belives in (obviously, no matter how many people it may offend or
    turn off to the band).

    Buck:

I'm not about to buy this because I have no interest in Boston
whatsoever. I am intrigued though by the nature of the "overt
political messages" in the liner notes. What is the gist of it?

    Thanks,
    Brian

    Basically--

    - Don't buy fur!
    - Discourage hunting for game/sport
    - Don't buy/eat veal

..and a few others I'm forgetting at this time...

Ted Nugent has a better idea - kill your own food because there are
    less steroids in the meat!

I'm boycotting the album because he didn't include

    	- Don't kill the whales

    ;-)

Well, I'm boycotting it because he included any of that stuff, so
    there! :-)

Actually, I'm boycotting it because IMO Boston produces anachronistic,
homogenized, blender muzak (same reason Brad Delp is boycotting it,
from what I hear :-) But since Tom has obviously fallen prey to
the dark force of political correctness, I just wanted to say that
regardless of how I feel, I still *value his differences* deeply.
There. Now everyone kiss the nearest tree and do a big group hug...

Still looking for any upcoming tour info...

The new one: I like it. When I hear it, I crank
it right up. Not the best disc in the world, but
    it rocks o.k.

Any word on the law suit facing the singer (Cosmo)?

I haven't heard the whole album, but I have heard "Walk On"...

    What a piece of sh!t...

The beginning is OK, the end is OK... The middle part sounds like
really bad out-takes from "Smokin'" The keyboards absoulutely Suck!!!
And the singer, although he can hit them notes, isn't in the same
    league as Brad...

    Just my 2 cents...

    Bill,
        It isn't worth much.

    Bob,

Are you referring to the album or my opinion ???

Regardless of what I think of the latest offering from "Boston",
I still think the first album is on of the best ever...
Unfortunately, it seems to me that Scholz hasn't had an
    original thought since then...

    My other 1/2 cent...

    Bill,
Although I do like his songwriting, I do tend to agree. I just wish
I could get into his studio for awhile.

Agreed. Tom was WAY ahead of everyone (production-wise) in '76 when
he popped up with the 1st...

The twelve track Sculley that Tom recorded the first Boston album
on (an enormous machine, standing some 6' tall and 4' wide, and most
likely weighing a ton) is in the basement studio of one Chaz Farren
of Joe Perry Project, Farrenheit, and of course, DEC SoftBase fame!
    :-)

Right next to it is the mixer Joe Perry used to cut his demos on,
and to the right of that is JP's 8 track Sculley (another huge beast).
Going to Charlie's place is a lot like going to the Smithsonian! :-)
