    I forgot to add that Hedges is on the Windham Hill label.  His latest
    is called 'Aerial Boundaries'.
    
    On his last album, he does an acoustic version of Hendrix'
    "Watchtower".  I never realized before that Dylan wrote that tune.

    I *LOVE* Michael Hedges...  He's hot with that double necked
    bass/six-string acoustic.  I saw him at Great Woods (Or was it on the
    Common?) a few summers ago, and was *totally* blown away... Tapping a
    bass with one hand and tapping an acoustic with the other would impress
    anyone. Especially when it comes out sounding like this guy !! 

    He's a riot too.  He'll sit there and make jokes while he's pulling
    in a alternate tuning, then just start wailing away.  Live On The
    Double Planet is one of his better offerings I think.

I recently rented one of the Windham Hill concert videos that Hedges
is on.  It is the one recorded at Red Rock in Colorado.

Hedges' audio releases don't do him justice, I recommend renting one
of these videos!  They're Hi-Fi also, crank it through your stereo!

    jc, that is the Harp Guitar.  It has 6 bass harp strings added
    onto a 6 string acoustic.  The song he does in the video with it
    is called, "Because Its There".
    
    In the video, he says that the Harp Guitar is made by Symphony of
    Minneapolis, circa 1920.

    In the new issue of Guitar World, a lot of the big name guitarists
    submitted lists of their favorites from other guitarists.  It was
    interesting to see that both Joe Satriani and Steve Vai list "Aerial
    Boundaries" (by Hedges) as one of their favorite albums.

    I've been listening to his live album recently and it's pretty
    incredible.  I'd love to be able to *see* how he pulls some of that
    stuff off.

    I've got a Windham Hill "Live" Beta video tape of Michael Hedges.
    
    He plays a lot of stuff with his hand *over* the top of the neck.
    
    Pretty radical, but he's really interesting to watch.
    
    To me, he's like the Jimi Hendrix/Eddie Van Halen of the accoustic
    guitar - a real pioneer.

    I've rented "An Evening with Windham Hill" from the local Blockbuster
    Video.  They have a large selection of the Windham Hill stuff.

    On the above video, they spotlight Will Ackerman, Michael Hedges, Scott
    Cosseau, and Shadow Fax.

    The 20 minutes of Hedges is amazing!  Especially the opening tune
    (referred to in -1) "Silent Anticipations".  The guy does some amazing
    2 handed tapping on the acoustic.  He also does a tune with the
    double-necked harped guitar on there.

    Santa brought me 2 of his tapes.  Both are instrumental all the way
    through and are titled "Breakfast in the Field" and "Aerial
    Boundaries".

    BTW - I believe he doesn't use any effects at all, just amplification.
          He usually does the rhythm piece with the left-hand hammer-ons 
          and picks with the right hand to get the layered pieces.  No
          delay at all!

Guitar Player and Frets magazines published a joint effort magazine
called "more Hot Licks".  There's one short Hedges song there called
"Because It's There".  It was the song he wrote when he first got
his harp guitar.  The tuning is EADEAD and it involves continual
hammered on chords with the left hand while the right plays one-hand
harmonics.  Most of it can be played without the haro strings.

In the same issue was am article on alternate tunings.  "50 ways to
leave your standard tuning" it was called and next to each one was
a small list of artists who used that tuning at some point.  I'll

A few thing to note:
 
I'm creating an archive of magazine articles, transcriptions,
tunings, and concert dates.  I'll post these things to the list
from time to time and if anyone has updates or corrections,

bm17@andrew.cmu.edu, or calling me at (412) 268-7649.
Once I get a good collection of things together we can start
worrying about trading things.
 
Also, I'm moving to Santa Cruz in March so there may be
a few changes in the list, depending on whether they let me
run it from the TGV machines.  If not, Marc Shannon says
I can keep it on Drycas.  I've got one month to finish my
project before I leave so if I get bogged down with work
I may be a little slow responding to mail.  (this is my second
mailing list and there are only about 20 people on it.  My other
list has 430).
 
Well, that's about all for now.  And for you people who are

Howdy folks,
 
Just for kicks, I took the four bars of Nomad Land that appeared in
the October 1990 issue of Guitar Player, fleshed them out a bit and
typed in some TAB.  It's a fun song to play because a) it's got a groovy
(did I really just say that?) reggae rhythm and b) the top three strings
are all tunned to the same pitch.   You play the melody (1-3 strings)
with your left hand pinky and r.h. fingers.  Play the bass parts with
r.h. thumb and l.h. index  (generally).   The 12th fret notes are usually
harmonics which you can play the normal way, or by slapping the
12th fret with your right hand (strike it hard and perpendicularly, making
sure the string hit the fret metal).  The 5-3-2-0 decent in measure 4
is a series of chord pull-offs using the pinky, middle, and index fingers
to bar the successive chords.
 
To get to this tuning from standard:  tune 2  to the same pitch as 3.
tune 1 to the same pitch as 3.  tune 5 to G a fifth below 4 (7 frets).  tune
6 to C, a fifth below 5.  this tuning take a fair amount of tension
out of the neck, so you'll want to re-check the tuning off all the strings
again when you're done tuning the first time.  (1 is the lightest guage
string, right?)
 
My TAB's not very good, so you'll have to listen to the song (on
Taproot) in order to figure out what I was trying to do...  Plus, I typed
this in from memory, so there may be a few mistakes.

Greetings!
 
This past weekend, I was fortunate enough to catch Mike at the Park West in
Chicago, so I thought I'd fill you guys in on the show...
 
Songs that he performed (I think I've got them in order, but I'm not sure):
1st Set:
"Eminence Front" - that New Age classic, based on a bizarre guitar riff
"India" - a new song, complete with vocals!
"Buffalo Stance" - Hedges does rap (well, sort of)
"Because It's There" - played on his new, electric harp guitar w/ transtrem
"Ritual Dance" - the first song that really blew everyone away
"The Road to Return" - another new song, this one played on keyboards
"I Carry Your Heart" - from the new album, it looks playable!  Anybody tried to
		     figure this one out?
"Silent Anticipations" - the most impressive piece he played all evening
 
2nd Set:
"The Naked Stalk" - the only song that I could play (well, sort of)
"The Jealous Tunnel / About Face" - in the same tuning as Naked Stalk
"Point A, Point B" - first time I've ever seen a transtrem used.  It's sort of
		     like a tremolo bar that you can lock into place, which 
		     gives him a really innovative way to create new sounds.
Another Aerial Boundaries song - sorry, I can't remember the title
"The Funky Avocado" - once again, he astounded everyone
"She Drives Me Crazy" - the most entertaining song of the evening.  Everyone
		     was laughing, singing along to the 'oo oo' parts, and
		     marveling that this guy could play a Fine Young Cannibals
		     song on an acoustic guitar and make it work
"Aerial Boundaries" - he even through in a verse of "Inna Gadda Da Vida"
New Song - I didn't catch the title, it was sort of a Neil Young ballad song
"Love Bizarre / Aquarius" - a totally reworked version of "Love Bizarre", 
		    very different from the one on the Double Planet album,
		    and in a different tuning (I think).  I'm still not sure
		    how he worked in "Aquarius", but it sure was fun.
"All Along the Watchtower" - the big finale, played TOTALLY different than
		    I thought it was done.  Will I ever figure out how he
		    plays this song???
 
Well, that was the show (more or less).  Of course, it was an incredible 
musical experience.  And, of course, I left feeling like I'll never, ever
be able to play anything that sounds that good.  But, hey, that's what
this mailing list is for, to help us figure out how normal people like us
can play like that!  So, hopefully, with three new songs (all with vocals)
already finished, maybe he'll put out another new album before the end of 
the year!

  Masaki Murakami asks about Hedges' new TransTrem harp guitar.  It's not a
Steinberger, although it uses a Steinberger neck and bridge.  Here's what he
says about it in the interview in the October '90 Guitar Player (which is a
good interview, and an awesome cover picture of Hedges with the Klein harp
guitar):
 
  "[re: TransTrem] Finally, I have a guitar that can do what I want in
standard tuning.  I can't wait to get some kind of delay going and work out a
duet with it, where two chords on the two guitars move apart like diverging
trombones -- every time the pitch goes up, something else would bend down.  
And just think if you had a harp guitar with a TransTrem--and I do!  It's a
Steve Klein guitar with five harp strings.  But that's for the next record --
I didn't use it on _Taproot_, and I haven't finished writing anything for it
yet.  I don't want to record something right away just because it's fanciful."
 
  He goes on to say that he wanted to take the Klein on the road, so that he
could play his older harp guitar pieces, plus the TransTrem pieces (Point A
and Point B).  I saw him live at the Berklee Performance Center here in Boston
a couple of months ago, and that's what he had.  He had two acoustics and the
Klein.
 
  My only complaint with his show was that he spent an awful lot of time
retuning the guitars and adjusting his rack equipment (the delays, etc.).  It
might be nice if he had an assistant to retune the guitar he's not using, and
a technician to adjust the rack equipment (or at least some gear with
presets!).  The wait, however, was well worth it.  I really enjoyed the show.
I also enjoyed watching all the guitarists in the audience leave shaking their
heads.  I play bass, not guitar, so I don't get too upset about Hedges.

When he came here (to Pittsburgh) a few months ago, I went to see
him with three friends who also played guitar.  After the show we made
a pact to go home and burn our guitars.  And I'm going to soon, but I'm
still trying to figure out Layover and I need the guitar for that.  Soon
as
I figure that one out, I'm gonna torch the sucker.
 
I actually enjoy watching him retune.  Some performers take it off-line
and retune but he makes it part of the performance.  He'll talk to the
audience while he's doing it, or he'll play something to check the
tuning;
I'm sure it's part of the act.  When he played at CMU five years ago
(when no one had ever heard of him), he didn't fool around when he was
tuning.  He would just look at the tuning peg, give it a few twists,
strum
it once to make sure it was right, then go.  I like it.  It seems (to
me) to
remove the barrier between songs songs presented for a crowd and songs
played for the hell of playing songs.
 
He had the new harp-guitar when he came here (of course).  My friend
told me it was called a guitarp, but I'm not sure if he was making that
up
or not.

    Michael is the cover story on the latest Acoustic Guitar magazine. 
    They show a photo of him with all his guitars, as well as some partial
    notation and tab for "Layover" and "Aerial Boundaries".

8 1/2 by 11 (at least) envelope and I'll return any photocopies I can.
The self-addressed envelope is important.  (not so much because I'm
worried about the cost of envelopes, but more because it only takes
10 seconds to stuff a few sheets in an envelope and I have a seven
second attention span).

    That's hardly saying much.  Barney the Dinosaur's voice is about 1000%

    "Aerial Boundaries" was the last Hedges CD I bought.  "Breakfast in the
    Fields" isn't bad but not as good.  He sings on the live album so I
    didn't bother.  I was disappointed in "Taproot."

   Latest rumor I heard was that we ("DIGITAL, with round dots please", that
   is) were bought out by the "Barney Corp", and we will soon be changing our
   corporate colors to purple and green.  Don't know what shape he (it's a
   "her", actually) prefers the dots.  The new corporate song will be along
   the lines of, "I love you, you love me, what a disfunctional family"...)
