1.0. "Introductions -- Who are you?" by XYLAR::RICK () Thu Aug 14 1986 14:31

Welcome to the wonderful world of guitars and guitar playing.

I've started this conference on my VAXstation to provide a forum
for guitarists to exchange information about their favorite musical
    instrument(the guitar, silly.)

In keeping with the VAXnotes Conference Conduct, Chap 1, Sect 4.8,
Para. 2, here are the Guitar Conference Rules:

    	1) There are no rules.

However, folks wishing to 1) start popularity contests, 2) converse
at length about drums, keyboards, radio stations, pop rock etc.,
and 3) type tons of crap in just to see their handiwork, need not
apply. Do this in an appropriate Conference.

I've intended this Conference to deal with more technical aspects
of guitar playing(thus keeping the discussion of music in the MUSIC
conference.) Let's keep things on the order of: Scales, Progressions,
Chord Variations and Voicings, Effects, Recordings, Instructors,
    Publications, Instruments, Tunings.....

1.9Hello...and have a chord!18461::KELLYJThu Nov 13 1986 19:3349
    Hello!

I'm new to DEC; it's reassuring to find other guitar players existing
    in the world of hi-tech.

I've been a guitar fanatic ever since my father gave me a Martin
ukelele when I was 4 (I still have the uke!). Rather than play
in a band, I am currently in the woodshed trying to improve my chops.
I'm concentrating on transcribing Charlie Christian solos off some
Benny Goodman and his Sextet albums. If you haven't heard Charlie's
playing, you should check it out: considering he played with relatively
crude equipment (from an electronic standpoint...the guitar he used
was made by Gibson, so I'm sure it was well made) he has an *amazing*
tone. In addition, you can hear the beginnings of bebop in some
    of his meloddic approaches.

It's sad to say he died at an early age (23) from a combination
of pneumonia and all night jamming at Minton's.

Well, enough for an intro...before I go I thought I'd try to present
my favorite chord of the week. It may be difficult to convey this
on the terminal, but I'll try.

              Fret +-+-+-+-+-+ Fingers Chord: E6/9
               XI | o^o^o | | 2
                      +-+-+-+-+-+
                      | | | | o^o 3
                      +-+-+-+-+-+
                      | | | | | |
                      +-+-+-+-+-+
                      1 3 6 9 5 1 Tone
E G#C#F#B E Notes for the E version of this chord

The '^' symbol indicates a barre. Frets are numbered as Roman
    numerals.

When you try this chord out, play the low E a fraction of a second
before the remaining five strings are played. In this way, it gets
used a kind of pedal tone. Finally, if you have a whammy bar, dial
in a little reverb ('grease') on your amp, play the chord, and shake
it a little with the bar. I use this approach to use this chord
as a song ender. It winds up sounding like a pedal steel.

    Keep on rocking!

                         -< GUITAR FANATIC >-

Hi.. I'm also new to DEC, and a friend of mine suggested I try
looking into notes files just for fun. Well I'll tell you, as soon
as I saw the word Guitar I was hooked. I think this conference
is great!! It's a great way for guitarists to exchange info and
meet other guitarists at the same time. I've been playing guitar
for only four years but, not to sound conceited, my friends and
people in my school think I'm really good. I grew up around my
brother who has been playing for 11 years, so basically, he lured
me into the guitar world. I have little background in theory
,but I'm self-taught in playing. When I started, I had to jam with
guitarists who had been playing about 4 years longer than me, so
I always had to try harder. I'm constantly looking for more
info on the guitar, and I'm very open minded about trying new
things. I hope I can contribute in the near future, because I'm
getting so much out of it it's incredible.........later....

                                           Keep Jammin',
                                                 Mike Fiero

MY NAME IS WARREN YOUNG, AND I'M AN OPERATOR AT THE WASHINGTON

VIBRO CHAMP AMPLIFIER. I'VE BEEN PLAYING OFF AND ON SINCE 1980,
AND I AM WORKING ON MY CHOPS NOW, IN ADDITION TO TAKING LESSONS.
I FIND "GUITAR FOR THE PRACTICING MUSICIAN" AND "GUITAR WORLD"
MOST HELPFUL FOR LEARNING LICKS AND SONGS(GPM ESPECIALLY).
ANYWAY, I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING MORE HERE---

     Hey Rick,

We appreciate your efforts out here in Rockford Ill.
I've been random sample'n some topics and I have to say there's
some noteworthy comments made from some seemingly knowledgeable
    folks.
    I've been play'n Rock,Pop,Blues guitar since 1972. I've tryed the
standard Fender Strat, Gibson LesP, but I've been currently using
    a custom G&L which i truely enjoy.Same goes for amps I've tryed
    your Marshalls,HI-WATTS,Fenders etc...
I would like to suggest to anyone using signal processors needing
that extra edge to check out the aphex Aural Exciter type C.
One last thing,I think it would be great to start a new topic called
Words&Chords where users submit a copy tune with words, chords maybe
add intros, and solos and start up a DecFake book thing.

1.24Another one in the case...DDMAIL::MODELEVSKYFri Feb 05 1988 18:4832
Good afternoon and thank you for inviting us to participate in
    your conference.

I am Joe Modelevsky, a consultant in the Central Area. I've just
finished my new hire sales support training. Notice my style!!!

Zinger: Ya know, I've been a guitar player for a lot of years.
    In fact, I've been a singer/picker for over 20 years! I got
tired of being a migrant worker, so I began playing keyboards-
    computer keyboards! Argh! Argh!

Seriously, I am an acoustic guitar player (American honky tonk,
boogie, blues, country/folk) who still plays the clubs and festivals
every once in a while. I will be in Boylston, MA, from March 7-18,
1988, and would really enjoy picking with new found friends during
my stay. I will need to borrow or rent a flat-top; can anyone advise
on this need? I really want to play a few times during this visit-
when I return home, my 8 year old daughter ("Fiddlin Marcy") and
I will be playing at DePaul University, Chicago; I gotta keep my
    licks up!

FYI, I play a "James A. Olson" original. Nice guitar. If any of
you visit the Chicago area and want to see a unique instrument,
    let me know.

Now,let me summarize...Oh, forget it- just page thru it again...

Finally, in closing (notice the transition?), let me tell you I
look forward to our successfully continuing this dialogue and to
our partnership of interest in guitars.

    Thank you, thank you.

    Hey folks!!

My name is John Bonno and I am a new employee to DEC. I am absolutely
thrilled that there are serious guitar players out there as well.
I have been playing guitar for about 12 years. I own two guitars
right now, a 1980 Gibson Les Paul, and I recently just purchased
a 300ST Kramer. The Kramer is nice to fool around on, but it just
doesn't compare to Mr. Paul!! I play with a Peavey amp and I have
an Ibanez Digital Delay as well. I can do so many things with the
Delay; I recommend it to anyone who is looking for an effects pedal.

I read "Guitar" magazine as often as I can. It has a lot of
interesting music in it. The transcriptions are very helpful for
thos pieces the ear just cannot pick up. I'll be looking for more
notes soon. I must get back to work. Have a good day.

Hi, I just found this conference so let me introduce myself. My name
is Bill but usually go by Guido. Ive played guitar for about 22 years.
I play a takamini (I think thats how you spell it) 12 string flat top,
Guild X79 electric, randall amp, various pedals, sequencial circuits
6 track sequencer midi to a seq cir drum machine. Lastly I have an old
moog rogue. I play all this through a tascam 244 4 track recorder. I
got the other non guitar stuff so I can jam alone or call people up and
have them come over to jam. well enough of the bullsh*t. I need to
know if anyone knows how to replain the frets. On my guild up a fret
or 2 above the high E first string I've developed a buzz especially
when I bend the string. Any help out there.

    Hi,

I'm Wes - a guitar player (off and on) since 1973. I just bought a new
Guild D-15M, and really like playing it.

My first "real" guitar was a Guild six-string acoustic, that I bought
back in 1976 or so. It was a beauty (all maple, except for the rosewood
fretboard), but I sold it and traded up into the wacky world of
    electrics.

Then I sold all of that and just fooled around with a crummy six-string
    piece of garbage.

Now I'm back to playing a guitar that I enjoy. If I could give one
piece of advice to aspiring guitarists, it's DON'T BUY A CRUMMY GUITAR.

    Hi there,

my name is Alexis von Croy,31, just call me Sascha. I'm an advertising
consultant in the German DEC headquarter, Munich.

I started guitar playing 3 1/2 yaers ago - practicing chords and rhythm
alone for 2 years. Since 1990 I'm having lessons I'm jhaving lessons
with an American Jazz guitarist who played with many of the famous guys
(Mingus, sonny Rollins, B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis etc. - maybe there's
somebody out there knowing him - his name is NEil Bacher from Miami,
    FLA).

I'm totally into blues....perfect in listening to it...still much of a
    beginner in playing.

My favourite guitar players and bands:
Jeff Beck, - absolute Nr. 1 rock guitarist for me at the moment

    others:
Jeff Healey, Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Who,
Rolling Stones, Clapton and Cream, Yardbirds, Lou Reed ....I think you
do have an idea about what I like now.

I play a Fender American Standard Stratocaster (3 color sunburst), an
EARTH 100W Tube Amp (I'd appreciate ANY info on that amp since it's not
well known over here), a RAT distortion and a VOX Wah-wah pedal. I'm
looking for a good digital chorus and a used 4-track-cassette-recorder!

just at the sight of me.

'73 Gibson EB4-L bass. Had it forever. Wouldn't sell it even if
           I could...

Amps: Tiny Peavy "Rage" with "super-sat", should more realistically
            be called "in vain gain".

Ampeg B25-B. Huge (2x15) bass amp just slightly smaller and
            lighter than an SVT.

    Other: a couple MIDI do-hickeys...;^)

Guitar isn't my main instrument, nor do I intend it to be. I guess
I just learn enuf to get me thru whatever my current need is in the
studio. I played bass for 10 years, but the chops have suffered
horribly thru neglect. I go thru spurts where I play the thing
relentlessly for a couple weeks, then ignore it for a couple months.

No guitar heroes, although Satch's "Surfin...." CD gets alot of
airplay. Interests run to jazz, fusion and dance music. Pretty
    burnt out on most rock...

first fret!). I also have a Kramer, Fender Mustang, and
B.C. Rich. I play through a Fender Prinston Chorus, with
various pedals (Graphic EQ, Comp/Sustainer, Rat, Delay,
Stereo Chorus) and just bought a SUNN cab.

Heros/groups: Satriani, SRV, Jeff Beck, Jeff Healy, Zepplin, Heart,
Aerosmith, Allman Brothers...just to name a few.

Hi everyone. I'm with DEC in Toronto. I was ecstatic to hear
there was actually a Notes Conference for us. Anyway, I've been
playing on and off for ten years now, with my roots coming from the
likes of Rush, Boston and early Styx.

I'm currently playing a '76 Les Paul Custom with a Seymore Duncan in
the lead position. It gives off an incredibly ballsy sound. As far as
effects go, I only have two: BOSS Super Overdrive and a BOSS Chorus.
I am looking for an amp - any suggestions?

One little tip to keep your guitar(s) in great shape. When you change
the strings, take the time to clean the fret board of that "guck" that
builds up and most importantly, lemon oil it (the fret board) just like
our Mom's did with the Livingroom furniture.
Then, use a Q-tip and remove any oil from the actual metal piece
separating the frets (does anybody know the name of that thing?) Let
the guitar sit over night and then string it the following day. This
ensures oil won't get all over the strings.

    Happy playing,
    Ron

Mike suggested I sign in, since I have equipment now and can
        kinda sorta play a scale...

I'm a soon to be non-DECie. I just picked up a used Ibanez
PF-300 and a used Crate G-20C stereo Chorus amp - nneded
something to practice on. I also have a nice 6' rack containing
various and assorted home stereo gear - Crown preamp, eq, tape
deck and amp, as well as some open spaces.

Being a techno-weenie, I've already opened up the guitar and
cramolined the pots and jacks. I've got the schematic for the
amp, so after practice, I can weild a hot soldering iron.

I always wondered why Mike wouldn't let me too near his equipment
        :-)...

1.81NOTES FROM THE NORTHTROA09::BUCKTONTue Mar 26 1991 19:4922
Good day. I was christened Steve Buckton and I am the (only) sales rep
in Thunder Bay, Ontario, although relocated from down south (Ontario).

I love this conference, being a picker myself for the last 29
years. Started at age 9, you figure it out. Who do I like? Well I'm a
big Blues fan, heavy into Albert Collins, Johnny Winter, Son Seals and
such. On the other hand you can see I'm getting on a bit so when I'm
VAX'ed out at the end of the day I sit back with the likes of William
Ackerman, Mark Knofler, Leo Kotke etc.

Equipment? 1968 (or so) Strat (looks it), Roland amp, Takamine
    N-series acoustic, Yamaha acoustic.

Who are the slide players out there? Also I get down to Minneapolis
once in a while, are there any specialty music shops or pawn shops
    dealing in musical instruments?

    	Thanks for the space,

    	Steve

	Hi,

My name is Jim Bailey, I'm a S.W. Consultant in Orlando, Fl. I've
been digging through this conference pretty thoroughly the last
month or so and feeling guilty so I guess I'll jump in.

My motivation for being here started a bit differently than most
of the intro's here. I have been a woodworker for quite a few
years and have been looking for something a bit more 'artistic'
to try than cabinets and furniture. Well, how about a guitar ?

As a youngster my mother bought me an inexpensive acoustic guitar
and later an electric and amp (from a pawn shop as I remember).
I never really learned to play too well but there has always been
something about the design, lines, color, or just overall
appearance, I guess of a solid body electric, that seems to have
	a certain beauty.

Well, a couple months later, here I am.. I've been researching
the building of my guitar (to death) and am about to begin (a
strat copy - some parts from Stew-Mac, and various other places).

Now I have another problem (or is it a problem ?). After reading
and following you folks for the last couple months, now I am not
just interested in building, but really getting interested in
	PLAYING again.

What do you think ? 36 years old a bit late to be getting started?

	Sorry for the rambling...

	-- Jim Bailey

Hey! My name's Rob Trickey, and I'm a co-op working with DEC right now.
This conference is great! It gives me something to do when I should be
doing something else! ;^) I've been playing a little over two years and
I'm just now beginning to really wanna know how to play (like theory
and such). I'm taking lessons from Buck, so I'm sure I'll be Yngwie
by the end of the summer! ;^) (Yeah right!)

                                    Keepicking!

Hi folks,

Have just returned to this notes file after a BIG sleep.

Its got bigger and better :-)

Didn't sign in last time - sorry :-( will do so now -

Here's my details:

o Playing since I was 14 ( 20 years - just about :-(
o Covered all kinds of material (Country, Chart [pop] , 70-80s Rock, Busking
  etc) .
o All kinds of gigs/venues and all kinds of weather braved ;-)

o Guitar - Started of with a Wilson Rapier (UK 70s cheap strat type), then a
Strat (didn't stay in tune), then to an Ibanez Artist (had this for about 10
years - good axe), recently retired and sold everything I had for a Levinson
Blade (R4); - great trem arm.

o Amp - Like above had lots over the years (HH, Marshall, Music Man, Peavy) -
recently sold my Peavy to help me get my Blade. Just recently picked up a
HH 50 watt studio amp (want to upgrade the sounds by adding either a pre-
amp or an effects processor or a bit of both - just set the amp flat etc.
Can't afford a better amp as I'm skint after getting the Blade :-(

Looking at something like the new Boss BE5 ( 8 program model), or the Zoom
thing (heard about a new Zoom thing coming but no details :-( or the Korg
A5 - I'm used to the wee boxes and not all that bothered about rack jobs.

I've read the Notes on the Zoom and Korg in this conference but can't find
the new BE5 - if no note, I'll add it.

o Like most music - lean towards Rock/melodic HM and Blues.

    - due to numerous reasons I dropped off a bit and missed a lot since about
1986 onwards (went into resident Satuarday night - 50s/60s stuff) .

Now I only busk/stand-in from time to time, and I'm trying to get back into
    playing/learning again.

  - Hate - Rap

  - Don't mind some of the clever country stuff, like playing funk/soul but
not into listening to it too much.

o Currently play by ear (and its sore ;-). Trying to read Music at the moment.

o Current wants ( preparing for the winter nights :-) are :

 - get to grips with reading - bought a wee book and tape.
 - get a decent pre-apm/effects proc or hi-brid - thinking about the Boss
   BE5 (8-programme new model).
 - find out what Audio/video training courses are good from the ones that are
not so good (read some notes and mag reviews on videos but nothing on
cassettes - any notes on this ? - if not I'll add .

Bye for now.....Gordon.

I don't believe it.....I haven't even signed into this conference yet!

    Ok here goes....

Jason Flowers, based in the UK Customer Support Centre supporting
DEC to IBM Interconnection S/W. I'm 23 and have been playing
(seriously) for about 7 months, I say seriously because I have had
    a guitar around since I was....err 6ish - 7ish, I must have had
lessons at that early age because when I picked up the guitar 7 months
ago I knew most of the open chords (but I don't ever remember learning
them! Truth be told I am kicking myself for not praticing seriously
when I was 6/7....I'd be awesome now!

Influences include...Pink Floyd (Dave Gilmour...but most of you already
know that right?), Jethro Tull, Alan Parsons, Gordon Giltrap, Thin
Lizzy....etc,etc....(yeh I'm hooked on 70's guitar playing, Vai,
Satriani et al don't do a thing for me....)

Ambition - To be a good guitar player.
Dream - To be a good enough guitar player for people to recognise me
    	       for it.

Well that about wraps it up.

1.93Hi,... its meSTAR::SALKEWICZIt missed... therefore, I am Mon Jul 01 1991 17:3485
    Well OK,...

Since I'm going to go ahead and start asking some questions in
here, I thought I'd introduce myself.

    	Hi!

    	I'm Bill Salkewicz,...

Been playing music for (creak) X many years now. Started
playing guitar when I was 5,.. dropped it at 8. Played violin, piano
clarinet, drums, sang in the chorus, in various school bands
before deciding to once again pick up the guitar in high school.
Been playing steadily ever since. Was trained on a classical,..
of which only the neck/badly worn fret board and "front" of the body
are left. Currently own an Ibanez acoustic,.. can't remember the
model but its basically a Martin D-28 copy,.. and Ibanez RG 570 (?)
electric,.. Boss Me5 effects,.. Peavey Bandit 65 amp...
various "spare parts". The Peavey will be relegated to "practice amp"
only status as soon as I decide on what kind of set up I really want
for gigs. I'm starting (helping to start) up a small band. The drummer
is a DECcie, theres me ,. and a singah/keys man. We just lost our
(excellent)bass player,. and so we're looking for someone if anybodys
interested in jamming in/around the Celmsford/Westford MA area,.. send me
some mail. We'd like to be playing the dive bar circuit doing some kind
of jazz/rock/blues thing.... with enough more recent/popular material
to keep the young folk interested (creak again!). We're starting to
develop a fairly decent collection of originals as well,....

I've been read onlying for about a month now,.. and I'm
already sure I don't know nearly enough about effects and amps
to participate in what seems to be the major thrust of this
conference. My quest seems to be more for the understanding of
how to play the guitar than how to get the perfect sound out of
my amp/effects. To me,.. the guitar/amp/effects are not the important
part of the equation,.. its the big nut that holds the pick that makes
    it interesting for me.

I'm not sure how popular a guitar Ibanez is in here,..
    and I'll answer this question:

" Why don't you buy a real guitar,.. like a Fender or a Gibson?"

now before I get asked it by a strat/Gib owner. The truth is,.. I love
a well made strat. Nothing beats it. But being on a budget, i don't
think Fender competes dollar for dollar. The strats I could buy for
the same money I was willing to spend just weren't as good IMHO. If I
only had another $500 to burn,. I'd probably be playing a strat right
    now.

    	What else?

OK,... major influences include (in approximately chronological
    order)
    	John Lennon
    	Joe Walsh
    	Eric Clapton *
    	Steve Winwood
    	Jimi *
    	The Grateful Dead *
Dicky Betts and the rest of the Allmans
    	George Benson *
    	Stanley Clark
    	B. B. King
    	John McLaughlin *
Al Dimeola (yeah he's an inflence,.. doesn't mean I can play like
    		    him!)
    	Larry Corryell
    	Chick Corea
    	Stevie Ray
    	Ronnie Earl *

    	* = has or continue to have a strong influence on me

So,.. with that,.. I'll feel a little better about starting to ask
    my stupid questions :-)

    	c u around

I still have my Shure PA from the days of ORE.

1.95Jim AllberyGANTRY::ALLBERYJimSat Aug 17 1991 14:4940
I've been following this notes conference for a while, so I thought
I ought to introduce myself. My name is Jim Allbery. I started out in
music as a drummer, playing the full gamut of percussion from marimba
to the drum set. Somewhere along the way I picked up a few months of
piano lessons (I was coerced to take the lessons by my mother, and hated
it at the time, although I now wish I had kept with it). Early in high
school, I wanted to start a band. I knew plenty of drummers, but was
having difficulty finding other musicians. By this time, I had obtained
a guitar, and knew G, C, and D, so I decided to become a guitarist.
I was in a couple of different rock bands over the next few years.

I guess that means that I've been playing guitar for over 15 years
now (ouch). I also had the unusual distinction of playing 3 different
instuments (drums, guitar, and bass) in 4 years of high school stage band.
Although I wasn't a music major in college, I played in the jazz band
(one year on bass, three on guitar). Although the rest of that band is
now scattered over Ohio, and I am now in Michigan, we still get together
every now and then, although the gigs are now about an annual event.
It's fun, and it satisfies my occasional desire to actually perform in
front of a crowd.

These days, I play primarily acoustic stuff. I'm mainly into fingerstyle
playing, but occasionally use a pick. I picked up a Hirade H-5 last year,
and have started trying to play classical stuff (learing the Bouree from
the D minor lute suite was a major accomplishment for me -- now if I
could only play it up to tempo without messing up those last eight
measures...). I also just acquired a Martin HD-28, and I am completely
enamored with it.

In spite of my jazz band experience, my primary interest in electric
guitar is basic rock and roll. I like rockabilly and early rock (Buddy
Holly, Roy Orbison...) and am a big Beatles fan. I am also a big Mark
Knopfler/Dire Straits fan (I think it was Mark that persuaded me to
concentrate on fingersyle playing). I love the sound of my Fender Strat
though my '68 Deluxe Reverb. I also am a Byrds fan, and not too long
ago purchased a Statocaster XII (I got a great deal on it, and could not
justify the price of a 12-string Rickenbacker).

    Hi folks,

I've been reading the conference for a while now, and I finally
decided it was time to speak up.

I played guitar and sang in many groups for about 7 years. At that
    time I quit playing/singing altogether... 8^(

    	Now I'm back! I borrowed a friend's Fender, and I'm picking up a
new Pevy Bandit tommorrow night! I'm also singing in a band up in
Dover, NH now! Hopefully if everything turns out ok, we will have
a really great band! We do mostly alternative and heavy metal rock
now, with the desire to widen range of music to suite pretty much
anyones needs. From what I have been told, the band has a few
originals, but no words... I plan on working on that...

    		Cheers for now!

Let's see... I've been playing guitar for (yikes!) +20 years now,
although I've never taken lessons. Played trumpet in grade and high
school bands, so figuring guitar stuff out by ear was a little easier
than starting out cold. Played in a few garage bands in high school,
and played in an acoustic duet after college. Did that "full time"
for 2 years and enjoyed it, but nearly starved. Played in a GB band
doing mostly weddings after I started here at DEC, but haven't played
out since '83 when that broke up. Now I have a small 4-track setup
in the basement to keep me musically active, although I won't rule out

i've been wanting to play guitar since i was 4, but have been playing
since i was 12. I did bands in jr. high/high school. Spent a semester
at Berklee playing string bass when i decided to go hippie for a few
years. I met my wife while i was playing a college coffee house. Had
kids early, so i've been broke most of the last 17+ years. When i
started writing songs i guess i wanted to be Jaul McLennon, and from
there mutated into a whining, pimple-blues folk-rocker until terminal
boredness set in. So i have not written anything new since 1976, but
i've been having a grand ole' time recording all that junk on my Tascam
    424.

I stay out of the new toys notes 'cause i can never have 'em, anyways.
Besides, i'm putting a ton of effort into the string-bass/classical
music thing at the moment, leaving not enough time for guitar, although
i have almost finished a neat cover of Rock-n-Roll Women of Buffalo
Springfield ilk. I recently made my first tape submission to G4 - but
at least 2 of them move a little.

Dave Bottom, 38 Sr. Info sys spec. Augusta Maine manufacturing

Been playing since jr. high or so, over 20 years anyway. Inspired by many but
Blackmore, Hendrix, Clapton, and Townshend are major early influences, lately
I've been more inspired by the likes of Satriani and Eric johnson than the
"old guard". Spent many years as a blues guitarist with pop/rock leanings.
These days I'm leaning hard on the AOR rock thing with an all original band.

Gear wise I have three setups:

A midi rack:

	Kitty hawk testerossa
	kitty hawk quattro
	kitty hawk patch bayette II
	rocktron intellifex
	korg dt1-pro tuner
	metaltronix sp-1000 amp
	rivera 212-CEL cab

A rivera trb-1m with a rivera 212-cel cab (i have two cabs!)

A semour duncan 100W convertable for traveling light..

guitars I have many, (8 total) but my main axe is an ESP M1 Custom, 24 fret neck
through with EMG active pickups. Others include a early 70's strat, a tele
thinline, a couple of acoustics a bass etc...

other junk includes a tascam 688, quadraverb, mididverbII, micro enhancer, comp
limiter etc. for my basement studio...

Lately I've begun to hear modes bigtime and have begun to start streaching myself
musically by attempting to take a classical approach to playing rock guitar.

dbii (really the original db but I'll let that other guy slide...)

I've been playing for about thirteen years on and off - mostly on.
My first exprience playing in a band was in 1979 with some guitar wiz
called Bill Buckley. We used to play Kiss, Aerosimith, The Beatles and
others - Din't everybody? I don't think he'd ever admit having any
connection to this though....

I've been in alot of cover bands and one all original called B.F.D..
I haven't been in any working bands for a cople of yeah's though.
This was so I could focus on by playing.

My present goals are to get started playing fretless bass, and to
also start taking upright lessons from a classical trainer. Other's are
to continue writing originals, keep playing, and start working with other
musicians in playing and recording. I'd like to become a little more
accessable without making my music generic sounding.

I take Bass History lessons from time to time from Brian Rost. *8^))

    Hey Rackheads!

I'm Al Kerr, 42, and I work in the Direct Marketing Organization in
Merrimack, N.H. I was thrilled to find this notefile, great
information and just a lot of fun to read. I've been a hack guitarist
and bass player since high school. These days, I like to hide in my
basement and play 60's and 70's stuff (every now and then I actually
try to learn a new song). Mostly though, I think playing the guitar is
just a great way to relax (certainly more productive than watching
Wheel Of Fortune). I own several guitars and a bass (a Hondo II,
chuckle, chuckle), but my favorites are a mid-sixties Vega acoustic
flattop (G30) and an early eighties Les Paul "standard". I have a couple of
solid state amps and the usual effects (I got a kick out of the recent
future collectibles note, I actually have one of those old MXR Distortion +
units. I'm not sure how collectible it it, but it always works when I
    plug in).

I've always liked Jazz guitarists like Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, and Wes
Montgomery. But I've got to tell you, this guy Eric Johnson can play,
I just got the new album for Christmas and saw him on Austin City
Limits a few weeks ago (makes an old hack like me just drool).

Anyway, thanks for keeping this notefile going, it's the kind of info
that makes me want to go home and try to learn a new lick.

    Thanks,

I'd admit to it. W.L. was a cool fackin band, man! We did covers,
but we never did album style, note-4-note covers. We totally arranged
all our material into segues, medleys, and other warped things. It was
pretty cool, original, creative, and fun. We did some killer
arrangements...esp. of The Beatles (which, I'm sure, a few of you in
here will find hard to believe!) 8^)

Mike Madden, 30 (as of today!!), generally read-only noter. I've been
'learning' the instrument for a couple of years. My instructor is
a theory-heavy jazz player who has tried to pique my interests in that
area with guys like Jim Hall, Wes Montgomery, and George Benson. They
have great chops but don't inspire me to pick up guitar.

At this point I'm really focused on listening to my influences and
trying to cover their tunes and not feeling very confident about my
ability to do it. Anyway, I listen to alot of Clapton, and SRV which
got me interested in some blues masters like Albert King, T-bone
Walker, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, etc.

I play a jap made Fender Strat into a Fender Super 60. I'm thinking
about aquiring some toys to put in the FX loop.

My New Year's resolution is to jam with Fred Abatelli, who plays like I
wish I could (Fred I know you hate compliments :) )

I'm Dave Hickernell; I'm a software engineer with Digital Services.
I've been playing bass since college. My primary influences back in
the deformative years were Jack Casady, Jim Fielder, Jack Bruce, Berry
Oakley and John Entwistle. I backed up a folk/classical guitarist
for a while, on electric and double bass, played mostly electric in
some theatrical productions and innumerable jams. My main gig for a
couple of years was in Rochester, NY, in a three-man band with an
eclectic guitarist from Concord, Mass., named Kinloch Nelson, a
devotee of the estimable Danny Gatton. We played a little of everything
we could think of at the time: covers of Stones, Marshall Tucker,
Doobies and Allmans, original jazz/folk tunes, some country, lots of
blues, a little cocktail jazz (!) when the need arose, and of course
some Gatton. We never went anywhere, mostly because we couldn't make up
our minds what kind of band we were. Before, during and after that I was
in a band that played 60's rock once a year (for ten years) at a dance
marathon at the U. of Rochester - sort of the world's greatest garage
band. I consider myself versatile, if nothing else. I play a Gibson
EB-0 with a Hi-A bridge pickup through an Ampeg B-25 and JBL K-140's,
and I have a Kay double made of finest North American plywood that I
    haven't touched in years.

I didn't play much for a while, what with this house and family stuff,
but I'm trying to get back into it (so I can tell my kid I was a rock
star, y'know?). There's no form of music I can't find *something* good
about, but my preference is for rock, straight up, loud. And I always
seem to come back to the blues. Lately I've been listening to Stevie
    Ray, and always, Clapton.

Well, I've entered some notes and am starting to feel at home in here
so I'll post a little info about myself:

Andy Foster (aka Droid, thanks to my Mom!)
Mass. born/raised (just a statement of locality)
Age: Mentally, *very* young! Physically, almost 33 (ug!)

My main instrument (currently) is the electric bass (about 2 years now).
Guitar has been my longest stretch (since the age of 11).

Played drums all through high school, mostly to get to the football
games for free and the offsite band-camps. Played with a couple of
bands outside of school as well.

Tried trumpet for a year to accomplish the above, wasn't much fun
because it was hard to make faces and you had to breathe alot.

Started on piano about the age of 8, went three years and lost interest
  for little league.

Sold most of my equipment for house money, all that's left is:

	Pre-1960 Guild Orchestra F-holed guitar
1983 Fender Precision Elite bass, active pu's replaced with stock
Fender BASS 300C amp (small, powerful, and 'heavy').

Summary: Jerk of many trades but far from mastering any of them...

Recently I had the misfortune to join, and subsequently leave a blues
band due to the total lack of originality that this sort of music
    breeds.

Don't get me wrong I think alot can be learned from the melodic
structure, but let's not get pretentious about it. There is alot more

Thought I would finally get around to introducing myself. My name is
Larry Larson, I am 38 and work for the Networks and Communications group in
Colorado Springs at CXO1/2. I have been playing bass and singing off and on
since about 1972. I played for a living between 1975 and 1979 and also
between 1981 and 1983. God forbid I ever have to play for a living again. I
was in such "famous" local acts as SUMMIT, ALBATROSS (allbutlost), HEROES, and
RICH BOYS. I have been playing in a band called STORM (not THE STORM) for the
past 18-20 months with the lovely and talented Bob Durham, who occasionally
makes an appearance in this conference. We mostly play 2-3 nights a week, 2-3
weeks a month locally and have a great time in the process.

I have been a read only kind of guy, but have enjoyed the craziness, as
well as the informational goodies.

      I currently own 4 basses:

Blonde - Fender Jazz with EMG pickups and Hipshot Detuner.

Champagne - Fender Jazz Special with EMG pickups and Hipshot

Red - Charvel 3B soon to have EMG pickups and Hipshot Detuner.

Black - Washburn AB20 acoustic/electric with NO EMG pickups.

      All basses are strung with DR High-Beams - .045, .065, .085, .105.
The exception is the Jazz Special which is strung .065, .085, .105, .125.

      I am playing through a GK 800RB, 1 Crate 4x10 and 2 Crate 1x15 cabinets.
Both 1x15 cabs are loaded with EV's.

I also use an Audio Technica ATW-1031 wireless, a Chandler CP1200 light

I've been reading this conference for a while, but decided to go ahead
and register, just cuz. I am just getting started playing, but have
been an avid listener for ever. Well, at least the better part of my
42 yrs. I played sousaphone and tuba in high school, and recently my
younger brother has talked me into learning the electric bass. I am
also interested in getting into the less significant strings (i.e,
guitar), but I'll wait until I feel a LOT more comfortable with my
    bass first.

Live in Woodland Park, about 1/2 hour out of the Springs. Just relocated
here from New Hampshire with DEC this past December. Been with DEC for
   over 12 years (really?).

Been reading ::GUITAR since about 1986 or so, but I'm sort of "off and on",
(mostly "off") with my noting - work gets in the way once in a while. I've
been playing guitar and bass for about 18 years, and wish I played as well
as all those years should indicate. Play mostly "classic" stuff and blues,
but have taken jazz and classical lessons over the years, too. Don't
strongly dislike any type of music.

I played in a few GB bands in the northern MA. area as a teenager, and
worked at Acton Music Center back in the late seventies as their guitar
tech and salesbozo (back before they carried many "real" brands of electic,
and were primarily an acoustic and sheet music shop). A friend of mine
still works there, so don't make any dispariging comments. :-)

   Keep playin'

 why: because it's there ...

I'm kinda new to guitar playing. Ok I'm very new to guitar playing. Orl rite,
I admit that I've only amassed four chords into my skillset since I first
picked up someone else's fender and broke one of the strings ( at least I
learnt how to tune the danmed thing tho' and pretty soon, I'll be finding out
more about replacing broken strings ... ;-) ) I'm mostly interested in
learning to play blues or bass. I don't have a guitar of my own at the moment,
so if anyone could point me to a "how to buy your first guitar and not get
stitched up" note - I'd be much appreciated. Also some reccomendations for a
"teach yourself to play the guitar" type book that you can actually hear
results from. ( The one I have at the moment breaks up popular songs into
a whole set of chords that sound nothing like tunes did ... ) I'd much rather
learn from something that "gets you playing" from step 1. You get a whole
new sense of achievement from actually playing a piece ( albeit a small one )
than wow, I learned a new chord that goes "strum" - just like the others.
But heck, I'm only doing it for the fun ...

GTS? Oh, okay. That makes sense.

I think I already have it. GTS that is.

At home I have a Guild D-26 which is perfect. (ah, 'cept
the nut. Cracked at the E just recently.)

Plus three beaters from hell. Epi 6 string acoustic/electric.
Epi 12 string. Yamaha SGB electric. (Gibson SG knockoff, but nice.)

Then I have the DR550 Drum machine and a Yamaha YS-200
synthesizer. Almost forgot the three tin whistles and a Gorilla
    practice amp that I hate.

Playing for a year and a half or two now and still don't know what
end to hold it would seem. But how I do LOVE my guitars. Soon to buy
an amp and maybe, just maybe, a strat. Then its back to lessons.

I've been a reader in here for awhile and thought that some day I would
get around to introducing myself. Todays the day. Anyway I've been
playing guitar off/on for 23 years. Mostly on but I had a couple of bad
times when I got upset with the buisness end of things and said I
would never play again. But' I woke up and gave up the buisness and
concentrated more on my playing. So now I play for my own enjoyment, I
do some 4-track recording and jam with some friends about once a week.
As far as music preference I like and play just about anything. What I
don't play is clasical, jazz, opera, disco, and rap. It's not that I
don't like clasical and jazz I just haven't had a desire to play it.
Over the years I've had different guitars to suit the style of music
I was playing. Today I own three guitars and these seem to satisfy me.
They give me the sounds I need/want. I use a Gibson LP maple top 69
std. a Fender Tele stock not sure of yr. I need to check the neck stamp
some day. And an Ovation acoustic/electric with a cut away. I play
bass also, I'm rather small in size so I needed a short scale bass. I
bought a Fender mustang bass, I recently checked the neck stamp on it
and found it was march 66. Not that it really mattered its not for
sale. I love the sound and feel of it. I've been doing this to add
riders on my home insurance. I will probably remain a reader but I will
answer questions if I can. Regards! Bob

I have been reading this notes file for about 6 months now, so I

not:-) appear in the near future. The music we play is sort of
    Alternative rock. (Whatever that is)
I will probably be mostly read only for a while, but you might just
see me around asking everyone who knows more than me (ie the whole
notesfile) questions from time to time.

    Hi,

I'm not a guitar fanatic but do like them and the music that comes out
of them. I played rock back in the 60's when the ventures were popular.
My first group was three pieces, two guitars and drums, and we played
for sock hops, teen towns and rented large halls in small country towns
    in Missouri.

I gave away my 63 Strat to my son but now am the proud owner of a black
Tele. Never liked the feel of the gibson for rock. I jam with friends
in town and probably will all of my life.

scheduled to close our doors on 01-APR-1993 (no joke). So now it's time

Hi

My name is Warren Roberts. I still work for DEC in Colorado Springs.
I've been reading this notesfile for awhile so I thought I'd introduce myself.
I picked up the guitar at the ripe old age of 20 (what can I say I was a late
bloomer). I've bee playing ever since (about 19 years). I started out with
acoustic folk music, moved on to electric rock. Lately I've bee working on
learning to flatpick bluegrass on my brand new 1970's martin and blues
on my brand new jap strat. I'm trying to learn play with a slide and driving
my wife crazy. Our cat also disappears when he see's me put on the slide.
Those slightly flat notes really annoying :-).

Musical Interests : Blues, Bluegrass, and anything new I interesting to do
                    with a guitar.

My name is Scott Bonneau, I'm 16 (yes, 16! I'm an intern ..) and I've
been plying guiter for about 4 years. I'm the rhythm/lead guitarist
for a band called Dead Serious, and we've been playing for about 10
months. I guess that's about it for now ..

	Hi Guys,

I have been reading GUITAR, on and off, for a while now. From the
frequency of my next unseen usage, I gather that this time I am
not here to stay either. But I am hoping that I'll be welcomed to
ask questions or even participate in some discussions occasionally.

I have also been in and out of many other music related
conferences such as BEATLES, CD, RECORDS, CLASSICAL MUSIC,
RADIO_RADIO, AFTER_HOURS and even ELVIS ;-) However, it seems
that the only conference I can stick to is MUSIC. It is compact.

July, August are good months for notes perusing. My phone starts
ringing in September. That's when most of the conferences undergo
the command DELETE ENTRY <...>/CLASS=MAIN. But I love days like
today, winter has broken, first snow of the season, it is knee
high white stuff out there and I don't have to go to work. I can
just sit here in my basement, listen to my music and note ;-)

Me: Some of you know me. I am a consultant III (that is my
customer title, my internal title is spec IV) in the Digital
	Consulting organization in Ottawa.

Some people think I am *different*, but deep inside I am not very
different than any other woman. I mean, "I don't have anything
to wear" and "No, I wore that last time" and all that ;-)

I don't contribute to music much other than being a fan for life.
My daughter plays the piano and she has been asking for a guitar
for over a year now. I told her that while learning how to play
the piano, she will also learn all about music and once she
learns all about music she could learn to play other instruments
much easily. This sounded right to me, I don't know if there is
any truth in it. Feel free to comment.

I also love to dance. Especially in the car ;-)

I like having an active/busy life. Right now, I need to drop a few
activities since it got just a little too busy, even for me.
I am into fitness and longevity and healthy eating and all that.
No, not a freak, only in moderation. I have been lifting weights
for over two years now, plus, bike, hike, whatever is there.

Well, I guess this is a *good* size for an intro note. Oh, yes, I
almost forgot, sorry to break this, but, I am married ;-)

This is GUITAR Lale, what we want to know is IMPORTANT things like
whether or not Steve Morse plays with emotion, whether or not
Clapton sucks, what gauge strings you think are best, whether or
not your a Boogie-type or a Marshall type, whether you would
be seen in public with Peavey stuff, whether speed and advanced
technique are the signs of "immaturity" or "non-musicality"... ;-)

    Hello People.

I'm Martin Rowe, Matt for short.
I play in a clubby band called "NO ESCAPE" I use a Strat+ Deluxe in
    black,with rosewood fingerboard.
I generally muck about at home with Atari based CuBase, and various
modules at home, mostly to produce sequences for use in the band
Yes I know it's not really "REAL" music but it's mostly us on the
    tracks......
The band is Keyboard player/Sequencer operator/backin vox.
Stand up drummer who takes the main Male Vocal.
    		Darlin' female vocal.
    		Me.....Guitar and backin vox.
Play through and old Roland GP8(8 Boss effects in a proccessor
controlled box) D.I'd through the P.A. and monitored on stage with
a Peavey Backstage30 that I've replaced power amp and speaker in
    to make it a "Backstage120".
I used to have a Yamaha SG1000,but as I was always trying to get
a "Fender" sound I eventually got one ,and now I'm happy...
previous guit's were Ibanez double neck(bass/6 string)
Gibson L6S (that one got nicked out of my car!)
    			 Gibson RD Standard(interesting shape,but HEAVY)
    			 Yammy SG1000
'78 CBS Strat in wine red
    			 Strat De-Luxe +

    Hello out there ...

My name is Theo Bellamy, MCS Engineer in Charlotte NC, where I am
the resident engineer at the US Bureau of the Census Aux. Computer
    Center. Enough computer talk!

I began playing music in grammer school and played piano, trombone,
sousaphone, and viola, before picking up the bass guitar. I played
bass alot during the 70s, but got away from it when marriage and
    DEC came along.

Well, the marriage is now history (and DEC's future is a big "?"),
so I have begun to play the bass again. I'm working at it about
2 or 3 hours a night to try to get my chops back and build up the
hands and fingers. It's helping a great deal to keep me relatively
    sane.

My current equipment is a very modest set up: Old 70s vintage Peavy
T-40 with a shiney new set of Snarlin' Dogs, and a Peavy TKO 65.
Once the house and boat are sold, I will be in the market for
    some more guitars.

If any DEC musicians find themselves traveling though the Carolinas
on the way to or from Florida this summer, you are welcome to drop
by, crash for the night, and jam.

I am also about to venture out and play solo for the first time in
	the next few weeks.

My gear is - at the moment :-

Starfield SJ Ltd semi-solid electric guitar
	Aria ProII ES-500 semi-acoustic (ES-355 copy)
	Yamaha CG110 classical guitar
	Fender F-65 acoustic
	Ovation Celebrity el-acoustic

	Marshall 8080 Valvestate
	Peavey Classic 20
	Peavey Renown 212 (old ss)

	Boss Chorus,Overdrive

I still enjoy listening to JA,but also Jeff Beck,Carlos Santana,
	Pat Metheny,John Williams,John Scofield,Larry Coryell,George Benson,

Well, I've been in here kibitzing for a long time, so I guess I oughter
    sign in as well.

I'm Charlie Hall; I work at the Midwest Financial Management Center in
Colorado Springs. I'm basically a born-again DECcie; I worked here
until October 1992, then went to MCI, discovered the grass is sometimes
devoid of chlorophyll, and came back to DEC in October 1993.

What did I miss the most about DEC? (1) the egalitarian culture, (2)
having a life outside of work and (3) THIS NOTESFILE. I gotta tell
you, when you leave DEC, you have to factor in the loss of this
notesfile (and DEC notesfiles in general)... Yeah, if things get bad, I
may be looking again, but for now, I'm too happy here.

I was a french horn major back in college; thought I'd grow up to play
in, oh, say, the Chicago Symphony, but I never grew up, so I had to get
    a job with DEC.

Now I play acoustic, generally bluegrass/folk/country/Celtic/swing, and
generally with a fiddler friend of mine or a loosely-knit group of
players. My equipment? A Martin HD-28, a Taylor 412 (good
fingerpicking guitar), an old Guild folk guitar, and various other
NON-ELECTRIC implements of destruction. OK, I have a fake Gibson EB-1
that I got from Jeff Cooper a few years back.

Any of you CXO folks thinking about MCI, give me a call...

    Hi,

My name is Joe Cardoza, I've been with Digital for 16 years now
(don't know how much longer this will last). I have just started to
learn how to play guitar through the use of video and books. I tried
playing when I was a teenager, a few friends were into it but I didn't
last. My children are all grown up and out of the house now so I have
the time and think I'll stick with it this time.

Anyway I found this file and have enjoyed reading it over the past
several weeks and look forward to learning more from notes and playing
    guitar.

    Hello!

My name is Kevin Lucht and I've been playing the guitar
for about 10 years now. I'm mainly a classically trained
guitar player but I love almost everything from this end
all the way to the heaviest of heavy metal. I must say now
that I fancy the speedy stuff! This holds true especially
within the classical realm. Hearing (and of course, watching)
a trained player perform pieces of concert caliber at the
intended (and often insane) tempos with such elegance and
apparent ease makes me freak! It's that kind of feeling or
vibe that I feel, something resembling a "hollowness" inside
that makes me play more, and more, and more.
I love this conference very much. It's rather nice to
see one devoted to the finest instrument in the world with
so many knowledgeable people who have alot of good things
to say about the guitar. Keep jammin' folks!

raise two kids, (girls ages 5 and 6) by my self, working and playing
    out almost every weekend.....WHEW!!!!

Anyway, my interest in music go from Alternative to blues , R & B,
Rock, Metal, Classical, Dance/Funk and so on. Don't try to sell me any
crying in yer beer country music though -- not my cup of tea.

I'm a bass player mainly but I also do keyboards in one band. I
started out in grade school on trombone, played drums in an R & B band
on weekends and in church on sundays. I switch to bass 'cuz there
cool. No really because I like the bass and as a drummer I had
"better" ideas of how a bass should be played... what a conceited
    as*hol*.

    My Equipment:
Bass Guitars - Yamaha BB1200, Kwai FB2J (active electronics), Gibson
G3. The amp is a Yamaha B115 - Ok for small medium clubs only 100 watts.

Keyboards - Roland JX3P, Roland AlphaJuno 2, Yamaha tone generator
(model escapes me for the moment) Roland SH101.

My models? Marcus Miller, Chris Squire (early Yes), the guy for Bela
Fleck and the Flecktones! He's great!

For any band, nothing is better then the bass player and the drummer
LOCKED TIGHT! Then everyone else can be as flashy as they want to.

Well, I've been lurking here for a couple of months, so I figure I
might as well re-introduce myself. I say re-introduce because some of
you may remember me from my previous life at DEC in which, among other
things, I was the moderator of the MUSIC conference (trying in vain to
fill the shoes of previous moderator db). I see lots of names here of
excellent musicians (and friends) that I have had the pleasure of
playing with over the years. After the Great Purge of '92, I spent 18
months outside of DEC. I've returned as a contractor in the video
server group (cool stuff technically; glad to see DEC is on top of
    this)

I'll spare you the details regarding my history in music... suffice it
to say that I started at such an early age that the story sounds rather
unbelievable. My Dad was (and still is) a great musician: a session sax
and clarinet player who has a long list of recording industry credits.
I breezed into music school with a scholarship and breezed out almost
as fast; it was not for me, for a long list of reasons which I'll also
    spare you the details of.

My taste in music is rather broad, despite the impression I might have
given over in the music conference. In the rock arena, my favorite
music is of the "progressive" ilk, meaning the groups like Yes, UK,
Gentle Giant, (old) Genesis, 901, etc. I also like a lot of newer
"alternative" music; groups like Porno for Pyros and Green Day. What I
don't like is what has become "main-stream alternative": groups like
Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots. I'll tell you a little secret...
I've noticed over the years that I seem to hate music that most
women like. I don't know exactly why that is, but it seems to me that
there is definitely "girl" and "boy" music and I sure as hell lean
toward the "boy" music. I also love Baroque and Classical music
(especially Bach and Mozart) and have an overall fondness for German
composers (even the sinister ones like Wagner and Mahler). And, since
I grew up in a jazz household, I'm really into the likes of Bird,
    Coltrane, Brubeck, Davis, Peterson, etc.

Anyway, I'm primarily a keyboard and bass player; I've played both
instruments for more than 20 years. However, since this is the
stringed-instruments notes file, I'll only describe my bass setup:

Basses:	1979 Precision, reworked with EMG active pickups and
a heavy duty (Schaller I think) bridge.
    		1964 Presision, stock (no modifications)
1972 Fretless Jazz bass, BassAss bridge, stock otherwise
		1982 Rickenbacker "stereo" bass
1984 Steinberger XL2, active EMGs. Reworked in 1990
    			with new Steinberger tone controls
    		1988 Fender "Precision Lite"
1994 Music Man Stingray 4 string, 3 band EQ
    		1994 Peavey Midibase (MIDI controller/bass)
???? Chapman Stick (not really a bass, but it's stringed
    			and makes bass-like noises :-)

I also have a 5 string MM Stringray on order; when it
arrives I will probably dump one or two of the above...

Amps and	GK800 RB (used as both a preamp and dual power amp)
Preamps	Trace Elliot tube preamp (damn, can't remember model #)
    		ADA MB-1 tube/SS preamp

    Cabs	SWR 4x10 Goliath II
    		SWR 1x18

Comp/Lim	dbx 466 (I think: it's the dual one with gate)
    		Drawmer DL241

    FX Eventide H3000
Alesis Quadraverb (loathe it, so I never use it)
    		Lexicon LXP-1/LXP-5

Other	MOTU MIDI mixer, JLC MIDI patch bay, Rocktron "Hush II"

And a bunch of stuff on the floor, including a MIDI foot pedal,
Boss tuner, Boss chorus and distortion pedals and volume pedals.

Next step is wireless, and I might dump the GK800 in favor of
    a T/E preamp/amp combo.

Over the years, I've been in many bands, and thrown out of almost
as many :-) I've probably split my time 50/50 between being the bass
player and the keyboard player. Current projects include a jazz trio
with keyboardist Charles Carpenter, who writes cool avant-garde
electronic music in strange time signatures and tunings (including
Bohlin/Pierce). Also, I'm currently recording with a rock trio called
"Go2", two thirds of which were members of one of the most popular
trios in New England history, and who shall remain nameless for now
to protect whatever innocence remains! :-) Look for a record and a
CD-ROM (yes, that's right) toward the end of this year.

Hello, Ken Hannan here. I checked out this file to get the
phone # for Fender, and since I'm going to post a note, figured
	I should introduce myself.

I've been playing guitar off and on for about 15 years (aside from
minor messing around as a kid). Never got serious, but almost
	always have fun with it.

I recently picked up a bass and an amp - a nice '71 Fender Bassman Ten
that came with a free Kay bass (barely playable) - because I'd been
thinking that bass might really do *it* for me. So far it's ringing
true. I love playing it and eventually want to get a better bass
guitar as soon as I can afford one.

My 6 string is just an Aria les paul type, nothing special, but it
	works.

I also own a nice Fender Princeton Reverb, mid-70's or so tube amp.

	Also own a Yamaha acoustic.

	/Ken

I've been mostly a silent reader for a while, with a couple of posts. However,
my playing is picking up, and I expect I'll be poking around more. Anyway here's
my current "inventory" :-)....

1966 Guild Starfire III
1971 Yamaha FG-230 12 string acoustic
1977 Ovation Balladeer 12 string acoustic electric
1918 (or so) Gibson F-4 mandolin

The amplification currently being done by:

Fender Princeton 112 (solid state) practice amp
Fender Bandmaster medium level amp
Ampeg V-4's (two) when I want to blow out my ears :-)

Right now, I only have a single 15" speaker cab that I share between the Bandmaster
and V-4's. I expect I'll be building some 4x cabs before too long.

I've been playing since around 1970 or so, but haven't done a whole lot for the
past 10 years or so. I recently got together with a few folks to practice and
just play. At some point we may play out. (All of us have played in bands before,
and we want to just enjoy the playing at the moment...not having to learn new songs
and load up the equipment to play out.)

I've been reading this conference for a few months now
and I'll probably start writing.

I play drums in two new bands, one of which "The Heatseekers"
just started playing out. The Heatseekers are an all orig
emotive+melodic+noisy rock band. We had one show at the
Causeway and I think we're playing at Local 186 in May.

The other band is "Frigid Stars" - an all-Codeine cover band-
not a quite a tribute band, rather we do our own arrangements.

I've been teaching myself guitar since this summer, with the
help of some of my band mates.

My guitar equipment:

I just traded in my Barrington hollow body electric (looks
 like a Gibson ES350) for a Telecaster Thinline (Japan re-issue);
 a semi-hollow guitar.

I've got a transistor Randall 80-112 Amp - which is the next
 thing I need to replace.

 Chorus, Flanger, and Tubedriver pedals.

In the Boston music scene, there seems to be about a
shortage of even mediocre bass players and drummers.
There are about a billion guitar players. I guess
I'm just making the problem worse.

I spend a lot of time in Boston rock clubs watching
original music bands.

I like:

Buffalo Tom, Hole, Helium, Nirvana, Elevator Drops, Cocteau Twins,
Husker Du (Sugar, Bob Mould), Mazzy Star, Codeine, Slint, Pixies,
Bauhaus, Tonic Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, Superchunk, Mission of Burma,
Kustomized, Sebadoh, PJ Harvey, Blake Babies and about a zillion others.

My name is Steve. I work at CXO (Colorado Springs, Co.) I've been
playing for almost 8 years. I used to live in Nashua, NH so I
can relate to the music scene back east.

Musical interests vary but my favorites are heavy metal(pantera,
sepultura, obituary, slayer) and country( garth brooks, alan jackson,
brooks & dunn). I realize thats a wide spectrum, but blame it on my
roots. I find guitar talent in many styles.

Well I hope to talk to all of you and learn a thing or two. this

It's a funny thing about noize. Loud volume does absolutely
nothing for me. Every nuance gets lost in the blare. You

I'm an engineer in Storage in Colorado Springs. I've been playing
classical guitar on and off for about 8 years, tho' I haven't really
taken it seriously until the last 12 months. My current guitar is
an '83 model by Larry Breslin, who currently does business in
Cheyenne WY, tho' my particular model was made in Florida. I also
play a little electric (cheap Fender Strat), mainly to help with
my son's drumming. Our most recent purchase was a Gibson bass.

My current goal is to be able to play public duets with my current
music partner. We both play recorders, and I would like to add a
little variety to our gigs. To that end, I am anticipating the
purchase of an authentic vihuela from Pimentel in Alberquerque. If
anyone here has any experience on that particular instrument, I would
like to hear from you.

Hi Dave - hopefully this will get thru to you. Don't know weather you
can cut and paste the message below or just enter the notes file to say
hello for me. When I left, there was a place for general chatter. If it
helps, I know Fred Abatelli and Dave Blickstien were regulars in the
file and still remain at DEC. Whatever you're able to do, I'd be
appreciative!!!

Hello boys and girls! For those of you who have been there a few years
and still remain, this is "the sakman" comin' back at you! Its been a
few years since I left, and I can confirm there is life after DEC. I've
run into Fred Abatelli, Dave Blickstien, and Dave Hinkernell a few times
since then. In fact, Fred if you're reading this, I'm planning on coming
to Stormy Mondays on 4/5 to see your band. For those of you who don't
know or haven't seen them, Fred plays in the Biggs Band. This IS the
coolest group in the area by far. They play a wonderful mix of swing,
motown, R&B, and just about everything else except "Skinnard!!!!
Zepplin!!!!" I highly recommend you DECCIE dudes and dudettes check 'em
out.

Myself, I'm just a workin' slob doing a day gig as the North American
Customer Support Manager for a company that manufactures meteorolgical
equipment. In my division, we take this equipment, combined with some
software and have a product called IceCast. This technology enables
highway authorities to conduct efficient snow and ice removal operations
in the winter. For those of you who work at ZKO, or live nearby, you may
have noticed a tower in the median on Rt. 3 in Tyngsboro, about a mile
south of the NH border. Thats one of my weather stations.

Anyway, I try to get to Stormy's most every Monday nite to jam unless
I'm traveling. I'm playing a beautiful translucent gold curly maple Les
Paul studio or a Strat style guitar that is like an LP gold top in color
with a mint green pickguard. I always bring my amp down too. Its a
Fender Ultra Chorus with my stomp boxes velcro'd on the top for ease of
transportation and setup. I just hit the desired effect with my hand.
When I left DEC, I was way nervous to sing. But nowadays, given so many
great pickers in the area, I figured I needed to become more of a singer
and quit trying to be some bitchin' guitarist - a dream I know I'll
never attain! So its not unusual for me to yelp and howl some blues
tunes when I play.

Well my old friends, I gotta get back to productive work. You guys keep
on keepin on! The one thing I miss most is the Notes file. What a
tremendous way to screw off at work!!!

Later,

Well they've moved down south. GC that is. I just called Rthym City
here in Atlanta Ga., they said they were closed for inventory, and they
were merging with Guitar Center. So I guess we will all be paying
    around the same prices now.

Geez, I just checked Note 1, and realized that I never formally introduced
myself - good thing that the folks in GUITARS are casual... ;^)

Eric Phillips
HLO-1 (former Electro-Mechanical Test and Etch Tech Fab 3,4 and 6)

I've been playing guitar since 1968, electric bass since 1970, five-string
banjo since 1973, and pedal steel since 1976 -- everything else (dobro, drums,
keyboards, fiddle, etc.) I fake! ;^) I've been mostly playing electric bass in
country bands (see Peavey note 1732.6) until just recently.

When in 1994 I married Betty - a singer in her own right - I knew I wanted us
to perform together as much as possible. I also knew from experience that most
bands do *not* want singers that don't play an instrument. So I did the only
logical thing that would yield quick results: I began to teach Betty to play
electric bass, and I switched to guitar. It's been a pretty intense learning
curve for the both of us, but the rewards are terrific: Betty's becoming a very
proficient bassist, I'm having fun trying all the things I wanted to on guitar
-- and we're gigging together as a band and getting $$ for it. Izzat cool or
what? 8^)

When I played bass, I had a 1987 Peavey Dyna-Bass played through a Peavey Combo
300. My working guitars now are both Peaveys, the Reactor (Tele copy) and the
Raptor (Strat copy) -- they're not the originals but they do the job and they're
affordable. Betty's playing a short-scale Mosrite copy bass, she sez the re-
verse cutaway shape fits her anatomy better....!

P.S. One great thing about being married to a musician: we BOTH go into the
music stores and go ga-ga over the stuff inside! ;*)

Pat Robinson KAO checking in...reading here with great interest.

Out of the electrics since '82 or so, but resurrecting my
Martin acoustic from storage, (been busy with 2 rugrats...at
least now they present less of a deadly threat to the guitar.)

Looking to limber up the fingers and toughen the fingertips
over the coming months...nothing like coming back to an
    old flame...8*)

Will ask the occasional question...but I have to say that I
am in shock looking at the prices of guitars etc...but I literally
have not been in a music store for a decade. 8*(

well Pat, lemme be the first to offer the 'welcome back'
and yea, sticker shock has entered the Guitar World...

we had it easy too long I supposed,, keyboard players
and drummers are just laughing at us at this point,....
but we still get out of it cheaper!

Have a nice re-entry...
