2232.0. "The official Robert Johnson note" by MILKWY::JACQUES (Vintage taste, reissue budget) Mon Jun 17 1991 02:38

    I did a dir/title="Johnson" and couldn't believe my eyes.....

There is no Robert Johnson note in this conference ??!!

I'm sure Robert Johnson has been discussed in numerous notes, but
if anyone deserved to have their own note, Robert certainly qualifies.
Robert Johnson did not invent the blues, but he probably influenced
more young players than anyone else in the Blues genre.

I just recieved two new Compact discs today for Father's day. Both
discs bear the last name "Johnson". The first was Eric Johnson's
"Tones", and the second was the Robert Johnson box set. I'll save
my comments on Eric for note 110. The Robert Johnson disc, officially
entitled "Robert Johnson/The Complete Recordings" includes all 41
recordings known to exist. This set includes two CD's and was a real
bargain at $19.97. The set also includes a book with a short biography
and the words to all of his songs. The music is pretty rough-hewn, but
really does the man's music justice. Bear in mind that these tunes were
recorded in the early-mid 1930's. Robert Johnson was murdered in 1938
at the ripe old age of 24.

This CD should be included in the collection of every guitarist, or
anyone that likes blues for that matter. It is a geniune piece of
American history. I expect to learn volumes from this set. I'm
planning to cop many of Robert's tunes, and having the official lyrics
    will make it a cynch.

So there....Now we have an offical Robert Johnson note !!!!

    Mark,

I'll second your feelings about RJ's recordings simply unbelievable.

Also, FYI, Hal Leonard Publishing is supposed to come out with
    transcriptions of the box set.

2232.2No Airplay allowed ??MILKWY::JACQUESVintage taste, reissue budgetMon Jun 17 1991 15:2113
There is a label on the front of the box which states "Not licensed
for Radio broadcast". Does this mean that radio stations cannot
play any of Robert's recordings over the air ?

I can see them not playing the entire boxed set over the radio,
since many people would record it and not buy the product, but
playing individual cuts wouldn't hurt, in fact it might encourage
    people to buy the set.

    Puzzled !!

2232.3royalties, laws, etcSTEREO::BROWNOne Gun, One Bullet, One FootMon Jun 17 1991 15:295
I think that it's something to do with the law that privately-owned
commercially available recordings cannot be played over radio, or for
public performances for profit. Just like it's supposedly illegal to
make copies of tapes and records. The recordings that radio stations
use are marked "promotional copy, not for sale".

I believe that it means that the CONSUMER RETAIL PRICE does not give you
the broadcast rights. If you are a broadcaster you must puchase the
product through the proper channels that provide you with the broadcast
license. This is similar to the prerecorded video cassette industry
selling you a license to view the contents of a tape in your own home,
i.e. you are not licensed to distribute the contents in any way.

So, if a radio station buys a copy of a recording an a store and
broadcasts that copy (and gets caught), they get in trouble for using
copyrighted material to which they had no rights.

Boy, that makes a whole lot of sense. Wouldn't want some DJ playing
the album on the radio so that someone might *hear* it and want to go
    *buy* it now, would we?

I believe John Hammond owns the entire catalog of RJ works. I suspect it's a
royalty gathering mechanism.

Hmm, I always thought the usual royalty mechanism
for radio was the station logs and spot monitoring of stations by the
"appropriate" licensing (ASCAP or BMI for example) entity. This must be
a new method.

Yeah, but that's the publisher's royalty. It goes to the songwriter,
doesn't it? The record company owns the RECORDING of the song. They want
something in return for the radio station using their recording. Maybe
they give it away and just want to keep track of the stuff. I don't
know. Anybody know? It's just my guess as to how it works.

Hey, we sure are making a mess of this Robert Johnson note. I'm much
    more self consious (SP?) now.

Just out of curiosity, what model Gibson guitar did Robert Johnson
play ? Does anyone know the whereabouts of his guitar ? Is it in
    a museum somewhere.

Check out this month's Guitar Player. I believe that it is mentioned
in the article about one of those old guys whose mother used to be
    quite fond of RJ.

I heard "Traveling Riverside Blues" on the radio last night (WBOS 92.9
Blues on Sunday) so I guess they are allowed to play it.

I own that box set and "unbelievable" is a vast understatement.

There's more soul there than I've heard anywhere.

I sometimes have the boxed set. It's the most difficult to get back
    when loaned out.

The book of transcriptions is out and covers just one version of each
recording (for those without the set there is sometimes two takes of a
particular song). Pretty faithful and well worth getting. Takes the
hassel out of and speeds up the learning process.
