1326.0. "Mini-warehouses for band practice." by RAVEN1::JERRYWHITE (Marshall Midi Madness !) Fri Jun 02 1989 05:24

Anyone out there using a mini-warehouse for band practice ? I was
thinking about checking into this for my band, but before I do,
does anyone have any horror stories to tell me about doing this.

Presently my band is practicing in the attic of house way out in
the country. No cops, no neighbors, no hassles. But the house
belongs to a guy that isn't a band member, and since the band members
work all shifts it's not always OK to come and jam due to the fact
that he works 2nd and his roomate works 3rd. And you never know
who's messing with your toys, is the door locked, is someone smoking
in bed, will your stuff end up at a pawn shop ?

So, to mini-warehouse or not to mini-warehouse ... THAT is the
    question.

Well, here's the pro's and con's as I see them. Please feel free
to add to both sides of this ...

    PRO SIDE:

    * Most of these mini-warehouse complexes are fenced, and well lit.
    * The band members could go and jam there at anytime night or day.
    * In my case it's a 45 mile round trip to the present practice site.
Most of the warehouses I'm considering are less than 5 miles from
all of the band members homes.
    * Power is furnished, I think.

    CON SIDE:

    * We may have to keep the door closed during practice due to the
volume. The units aren't insulated so we would die in our own sweat
in the summer, freeze in the winter. Also temperature swings
would be rough on drum heads, not to mention vocal cords.
    * No bathroom or phone close by.
    * A 14' x 20' goes for around $150 a month, we pay nothing now.
    * Most of these warehouses are located in heavily populated areas,
so more people would hear the music, more thieves would know where
      some expensive equipment is.
    * Overall volume would have to come down a LOT compared to the present
situation where the Marshalls never get below 13 !!!

Change "no phone" from CON to PRO.

Phone calls during practice stink...Although, it's easier to order
    pizza that way.

The lack of a local potty is a severe bummer. It could be worse
dude... Up in Boston, we used to rent a studio in Kenmore square
    for $450/month.

1326.3Rehearsal Space WoesSPGOGO::DADDIECOThat's Just The Way It Is .....Fri Jun 02 1989 16:2513
I thought those mini-warehouses were only accessable during certain
times of the day. Most that I've had experience with are locked up
tight at night after 6 or 7 o'clock.

Also - for rehearsal space - you may want to call Union Music in
Worcester - they used to rent rooms that were very secure and
practically sound proof - they charged by the month.

Also - there a bunch of vacant office buildings in the Westboro -
Flanders Road area that are chomping to get some rental monies. That
    may be an option too.

    Good luck...d.
1326.4YahCSC32::G_HOUSENo, you're not there...Sat Jun 03 1989 01:0015
    Those are good ideas, Dan.

Unfortunately, Jerry's in South Carolina, so going to Union Music would
be kind of a long commute for him.

You mentioned office buildings, though, which goes for just about
anywhere. This is an excellent idea! I have a friend who's band
practices in a room in an *active* office building. It's secure, has
heat/air and a bathroom! They have an agreement that they don't play
until after 5:30 pm or so, when the people in the offices are gone, but
they have day jobs anyway so that's perfect for them. It's quite
inexpensive too. A really sweet deal, I just wonder if this is
something that can frequently be worked out...

I haven't checked them out yet, but some bands around here are using
them so I guess the power is furnished, but it may be at extra cost.
