    Bill, get out your tape deck...

    He's on after Carson. NBC at 12:30 a.m. (geez, that means he's
    really on tomorrow). To head off another "wicked dumb question",
    NBC is channel 4.

    I couldn't believe it...

    They didn't interview him, didn't even let him play an entire song.
    Letterman didn't even know who he was...

    "Wicked" disappointing.  )-;

    Jeez, that's too bad...

    I had planned on watching, but fell soundly to sleep about 5 minutes
    before Letterman came on...

    Letterman doesn't stink, he probably just ran out of time. If he didn't
    know who he was, Shaffer's band *certainly* knew him, and had plenty
    of respect. The house guitarist probably hid backstage.

    What did he *start* to play, anyhow??

    Paul Schaffer introduced Joe as "a virtuoso, the cat everyone's
    learning from". Dave said he never heard Paul use such a term
    to describe anyone. Dave then asked if they were going to do a
    song with him and Paul said "no, he's just sitting in".

    So... he just played with the band and I'm sure the audience was
    blown away during the commercials. All we heard were the beginnings
    and endings.

    Yes, it was disappointing.

    Oh! I didn't realise he was just sitting in, I thought he was
    a featured guest... Not enough of a household name yet, maybe?

    That's too bad. Well, a little Satriani is better than none.

Actually, this is the way all the guest musicians are treated on
Letterman's show. Among the other guests that gave been 'short-changed'
in this way include Eddie VH and Eric Clapton (very frustrating to
hear the fist 4 bars of 'Layla', then they cut to a commercial!).

    You are lucky to even *see* Satch on TV. The dude doesn't
    even play shows over here (UK) - let alone go on TV.
1112.11Maybe that's the way they want it.CAM2::ZNAMIEROWSKIStrictly CommercialThu Feb 02 1989 12:1413
    re: .8

    	I don't think they've been short changed, I mean, look who we're
    talking about, two-three of the best guitarists of this end of the
    century, I'm sure if they wanted to be interviewed by Letterman,
    that coulda been arranged. Maybe they'd just rather play with the
    band and have a little fun than be put under a microscope.

1112.12Wanted: Emerson on TVDREGS::BLICKSTEINYo!Thu Feb 02 1989 14:039
    It's not the musicians who have been short-changed, it's the audience.

    Anyway, some musicians have NOT been short changed. I've heard that
    Keith Emerson did a pretty full-blown version of "America" with the house
    band that was broadcast in its entirity.

    I'd give children away to get a copy of that on video.
