Well, there is a place in Colorado Springs called "Speaker Shop"
that has re-conned stuff for me...

I second NEST in Stoneham, Ma. They built me a custom 12" EVM that had
a 4 ohm load for my Peavey MX combo amp. The price couldn't be beat
either, (I think I paid $85.00). It was some time ago, but if I needed
help in the speaker area again, they'd be my first choice.

I third New England Speaker. They are the absolute best place we've
ever taken our stuff to. They know what they are doing and they are
    wicked inexpensive.

They also carry new PA gear, mics, etc. CHEAP. When I told one of the
guys that their new prices were better than WantAd prices, he pointed
to the cramped, fairly trashed store and said something like "Of course
we're cheap, look at this place."

    They get my vote....

3111.6My experiences at New England SpeakerSEESAW::PILANTL. Mark Pilant, VMS EngineeringThu Jan 11 1996 13:3424
I went there about a year ago to try and get some musical instrument speakers
for a 2 x 12 guitar cabinet I was building. After explaining for about 20 or
20 minutes exactly what I was looking for and the purpose of the speaker...
they sold me two of the WRONG speakers. I was fortunate that I had only just
left their parking lot when I discovered the error. (And unlike the sign
saying no refunds, the did take them back...with only minor grumbling.)

From being in their shop and listening to them talk to other customers, as
well as experiences of other folks here, I came to the following conclusion:

New England Speaker is a DYNAMITE place to go if you need sound reinforcement
equipment (i.e., PA stuff) or mechanical work (rebuilding, reconing, etc.).
However, there are probably better places to go for raw musical instrument
speakers: UNLESS you know the exact make and model you want.

Their speaker prices are reasonable. The MA sales tax is (in some cases) just
about the same as the shipping costs from mail-order houses. Most of the
prices are about the same (within a couple of dollars). The benefit here is
New England Speaker is fairly local (for me).

Would I go there again? It depends. For PA supplies or speaker work: yes.
For musical instrument speakers: probably not.
