2901.0. "Mic's ????" by ROCKER::KNOX (Rock'n'Roll Refugee) Mon Mar 07 1994 18:26

    >>I know this isn't exactly "guitar-related" but what the hell<<

I'm looking for recommendations on a microphone ...

I've been using 58's for years, but want to try something different,
something with a better high-end punch to it. The 58's seem to bring
out the mid's in my voice a bit too much. It's tough to test-drive
a mic without actually using it in a real "live" situation, so I
figured someone out there might be able to make suggestions of what
    works (or doesn't) for them...

58's and 57's have the same freq. response and curve, so switching
betwixt the two probably won't yield the results you're looking for.

Try AKG's new mikes "TriPower" series. They have adjustabe roll
    offs...

I don't have any experience with 'em live, but have gotten better
results for some people's voices in recording situations using both EV
N/D series mics or Beyer dynamics. Neither have that big midrange bump
    that the 57/58s have.

Sennheiser has a new line of dynamic mics that are intended for live
sound applications. Given the sound of their other mics, I'd bet they
    probably sound real good

I've been using an EV N/D 757 for both live and recorded work. I
used a SHURE SM57 for years and believe the difference's in
clarity, ouput and feedback rejection are heads and tails above the
Shure mics. The cost will reflect that however. I paid about $240.00
for it. A truly great microphone - one that one that industries design
    award a few years back.

Should be noted that the 757 is the top of the N/D heap...
I think you can get 257-757's - prices accordingly.

                                  ^^

Was. It's now discontinued, replaced by the current top of the line
    857. 757s are still available, and you can get great prices on 'em
    now.

> I think you can get 257-757's - prices accordingly.

Yes, the 257's about the same price as an SM58 and has a very different
    sound.

Well, the 857 long ago replaced the 757 as top dog, but I still see
757s in stores and catalogs...you sure it's been dropped? I have two
    and love 'em to death...

Look for a used one, I picked one up for $140 in great shape and even
saw one listed at Daddy's for $125.

They're getting a little harder to find these days as stock dwindles. I
saw several places do blowouts on 'em.

The "Musicians Friend" has the list price of the EV N/D 857B
as $510 (call for actual price).

I was looking at the Sennheiser ProForce MD515 ($169 thru MF,
$199 list). These mics are relatively new, anyone out there
    used one???

Can, or will, anyone comment on the audio technica line of mic's. I saw
one yesterday (forgot the model) new for 95.00. The dealer said it
was a great mic for the buck.

                                                    Thanks, Jim

I've used the A/T mikes in that price range. The ones I used were
basically SM58 clones. If you like the sound of an SM58, this is a
    decent option for you.

    Re: EV 757

I just saw this mike listed in a new catalog, so I'm inclined to
    believe it's still in production.

That's not what I heard, but could be I suppose. I'd be more inclined
to believe that they just had a massive back stock of 'em.
