2866.0. "slow dance song suggestions?" by FIREVX::RUDNICK () Wed Dec 15 1993 12:39

    hey guys,

my band has the opportunity to play a private party and we've
got to pick up a couple of slow, dance tunes for the event.
does anybody have any suggestions for cool, not totally sappy
slow dance with the love of your life numbers? i'm drawing
a blank. the one that immediately comes to mind, WBOS's theme
song, "Wonderful Tonight", i guess is good but it's so played out.
i've read in interviews that clapton really doesn't like
the song to begin with and actually wrote it when he was waiting
for patti as she took forever to get ready...

    any suggestions?

    ben.

"Traces of Love", by the Classics IV or someone like that.
Sappy, but worked at my high school prom a looooong time ago. :-)

There's even a neat little sax solo in the middle that can probably
be adapted to whatever instruments you have around easily enough.

What style is the rest of the music you'll be playing?
2866.6blues-based party tunesVAXCAP::RUDNICKWed Dec 15 1993 15:5412

The rest of the music is in the "blues oriented party music"
category done with a groove. For instance... "Fever", "The
Thrill is Gone", "Matchbox", "One More Saturday Night",
"The Harder They Come", "After Midnight", "Steady Rolling Man",
the blues brothers trio of: "Hey Bartender", "Messin' with the Kid",
"B-Movie Box Car Blues", uh.... "Sweet Home Chicago".. etc...

Not exactly "hey sweetie let's cuddle" music.

What about that song by Bill Vera & The Beaters; I think it's called
something like "At This Moment" (it was on the TV show 'Family Ties' or
something). Sounds like it'd fit in with your other tunes (slow R&B).

    Other thoughts:

Dock Of The Bay	- Otis
    Ooh Baby Baby - Smokey/Miracles
Still Crazy ...	- Paul Simon

    (you get the idea)

Of course, there's always 'Hey Jude' or 'Stairway to Heaven'.

You could also do the Clapton/Layla thing and do a slow version of popular
hits. A few come to mind. Try playing a real slow, sappy version of:

    Summertime Blues
    Johnny B. Goode
    Frankentstein (nice instrumental)
    Ballroom Blitz
    Summer Song

I'm sure there's many more that you could convert to nice tasty slow
tunes that would be hits for the young and old. You could approach
K-Tel and do an album of 'former' headbanging tunes for slow
    dances....the possibilities are endless.....

    Any other suggesstions folks?

Charlie Daniels covered the country standard "Tennesee Waltz" on
one of his Volunteer Jam albums years ago. I've played this song
several times at various parties and it always gets a very good
response from people of all ages.

I'm sure most of you have heard it. The first verse goes like so:
    (Waltz=3/4 timing)

                                             A7 D
I was dancin' with my Darlin, to the Tennesee Waltz,

                A F#min Bmin E
When an old Friend I happened to see,

               A A7 D
I introduced him to my lady, and while they were dancin'

        A E A
My friend stole my sweetheart from me.

It's a great tune, but you must sing it with *Emotion*, and no
    shredding during the solo.

If your guitarist's up to it I've seen Gary Moore's
"Still got the blues for you" get the required effect.
Or "Parisian Walkways" is jolly similar.
I've got a MIDI chart of Still got the Blues if you want any parts
printing (CuBase Score Edit) e.g. Bass line, full guit part with
a reasonable version of the solo, strings etc

the middle of a rather high energy set. It fits in just right.

Our band did such a gig last night. For slow stuff we have the
following in our bag of pukers and slow dande pelvic rubbers.

Poor Side of Town - Johnny Rivers
Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying - Gerry & The Pacemakers
    Stormy - Classics IV
    Traces ditto
    Red House ..this works great.
    This Boy

    Get the idea?

I wouldn't mind doing a slowed down version of Communication Breakdown
or Turning Japanese. Anybody ever tried it?
