221.0. "Ozzy Osborn / Randy Rhoads" by ERASER::BUCKLEY (I'll Tell) Thu Apr 23 1987 20:04

Anyone out there heard the live Randy Rhoads tribute album
yet? I heard one song with an extended solo. the sound quality is
pretty good for Ozzy in concert, but for todays high tech in the
recording world the album still has a distinctive early-80's sound
to it. He was also playing very well on this live cut. When I saw
Randy he was rushing the tempos and playing real sloppy, maybe he
    was drunk??

I've been looking forward to this album for years. Ozzy has often
mentioned in interviews that he had some prized tapes of concerts
with Randy but didn't want to release them too soon after his death
out of respect for the family and friends of Rhodes. (He didn't
anyone to turn Randy's death into a commercial success.) So far
as I know, the proceeds from this album are being donated to some
sort of charity in Randy's memory.

I have some bootlegs of Randy in concert that were VERY dissapointing.
I'm hoping these tapes are as good as Ozzy has said.

To my mind, the solos in "Flyin High", "Crazy Train" and "I Don't
Know" are classics. This guy had tremendous potential.

I just bought the cassette the other day and am listening to it
right now. All I can say is WOW! The playing on this is just
fantastic. This is a good one for all the people who think that
all the fast playing metal guitarists out there lack the soul and
the feeling to be considered great musicians. On just about every
solo on this album, Randy pours his heart out and you can hear the
feeling that he's pulling out of the guitar. I've never realized
how much of a genius we lost until I listened to this.

Also, Ozzy still sounds damn good, even doing some old Sabbath
tunes (Iron Man, Children of the Grave, and of course, Paranoid).
There is a great little guitar solo at the end of Suicide Solution.
I think the one that tops them all though is Mr. Crowley. This
just has to be heard to be appreciated, so I will stop babbling.

Wow is the word. I thought some of the stuff sounded a bit "rushed",
if that's possible for a speed-metal player, though. He was so
incredibly fast that even playing 1/32 notes he was getting ahead
    of the band.

I saw him live once at the Cape Cod Colliseum (alias the "sweat pit").
He was a totally amazing soloist.

I was listening to some Ozzy yesterday on the way home, and I sometimes
forget how incredible Randy Rhodes is. Can someone tell me more about
Randy, like ho he came to play with Quiet Riot (ack!) and how Ozzy got
a hold of him. I know how he died (what a terrible waste), but don't
    know much else about him.

I saw an add once for a guitarist (Guitarist wanted in Guitar Player)
that insisted that the submission (tryout) tape have Suicide Solution
on it. Kinda freaked me out.

Randy was an amazing guitarist. Very musical and inspired. It was an
    incredible shame to lose him.

I have a copy of a video that sounds like the same one described
earlier. Has Randy with early Quiet Riot playing in a club. They did
a killer version of the QR song "Slick Black Cadillac"! There's also
some footage of Randy playing with Ozzy on a TV show.

I was a huge Randy fan many years ago and I paid like $30 for this
video, which is obviously a home copy MANY generations old. The
quality is abysmal, but it's still interesting viewing.

Crybaby Wah --> MXR Distortion + --> MXR 10 Band EQ --> MXR Analog

Isn't "Diary of a Madman" the one that has a picture of Ozzy writing in
some book? My very reliable sources tell me the "black magic
hieroglyphics" across the 4 edges of the album are very legitimate.
Either Ozzy is into it for more than $$ or he consulted with someone
who is. I vaguely remember their meanings, but most dealt with Satanic

Well - I stand slightly corrected.

The song "Mr. Crowley" is abut a witch-dood.

Apparently the story goes this Mr Crowley sold the castle that Jimmy Page
owns in England and it's supposedly cursed. John Bonham died in Jimmy's
castle, as did Robert Plants son. Myth has it that both times, black smoke
was seen rising from the chimneys, even though no fire had burnt there.

Hmmmm.... Scary stuff eh kids ??

I thought Mr Crowley was a song about a lonely old man.

Is what I said true ? (Buck ?? JensenT ??)

I don't know anything about the tales of deaths at Page's castle, but
the song "Mr. Crowley" is definitely about Alistair(sp) Crowley, an
avowed Satanist and author. However, if you read the lyrics to the
song, Ozzy seems to claim that Crowley was a phoney and/or was foolish
    for his beliefs.

Alister Crowley was the author of the real SATANIC BIBLE,Anton
Levey's satanic bible is a joke compared to Crowley's.Meaning human
sacrifice,Satan inspired conjuring of demons and spells. He believed
that when he died,if he had accomplished what satan had inspired him to
do while he was on earth,he would become the ruler of hell when he
    died.
I beleive all of this is very real but don't get me wrong I'm not a
    satanist.

songs are have skips and scratches in them.If the dude with QR 2 has a
good copy of this record please reply in my comet mail account if it
would be alright to let me copy this record.
Back to SATANISM and OZZY. Ozzy was facinated with satanism and the
occult. He had plans to build a black temple on his property but never
did because his second wife, and current wife,Sharon, wouldn't let him.
The subject never came up again.

The glyphs are real, since I've seen them in a witchcraft book
before. Most of the experts say that witchcraft and Satanism
are two very different things - but I'm not sure if these are
"Satanic" glyphs or not. Basically, I think people who waste
their time taking these practices seriously are a bit warped.

The story I heard about the Page-owned Crowley house was that
Aleister had had the place purposely built on the foundation of
a church that had burned to the ground with the congregation in
it. Then he proceed to have wild, Satanic orgies there. If
I hear one more story about Crowley's house I think I'm gonna
hurl! They become more ludicrous all the time. People love to
enhance stories like this quite a bit upon passing it on to the
    next eager listener.

Aleister also commissioned an artist to do the designs for a Tarot
deck (known as the Crowley-Thoth deck). Many Tarot readers refuse
to work with this deck for one reason or another (many claim it
    doesn't feel right to them).

Anyway, even knowing all this, I still think Ozzy is only using
the imagery for hype and money. Lotsa teens have a morbic fascin-
    ation with this crap.

Greg, I realize not many artists have a say in what goes on the album
covers. I also realize that an artist with Ozzy's level of revenue
must have had tremendous leverage at CBS records (or whatever his label

Well, believe this. After the Diary of a Madman lp (of which Rhoads
was killed mid-tour for that album), Ozzy wanted to release a live
album featuring Randy's playing, history, life, etc. (the album which
    eventually became TRIBUTE).

Well, CBS already had the next album concept in the bag. The album
would be titled "Speak of the Devil", and they already had that
(stupid) cover concept in mind. Ozzy absolutly *refused* to release
the live Rhoads tapes on an album marketed as "Speak of the Devil", as
he felt it would have been an insult to Randy and his family, as well
as the fact Ozzy wanted the randy tribute to be special (eg, he wanted
more artistic control over the entire package).

Well, CBS noting that Ozzy's former band, Black Sabbath, were about to
release a a-record live album (with Dio on vocals, titled "LIVE EVIL")
of old Sabbath covers, informed Ozzy that his next album, titled
SPEAK OF THE DEVIL (with stupid cover concept by record co.) would be
a 2-record live album of old Black Sabbath covers.

    Howz that for artistic control??

PS - Fwiw, Ozzy wanted until 1987, when he finished his contract, to
release the Randy Rhoads TRIBUTE album (a full 5 years after
         Rhoads' death).

Also, at the time Randy was playing with him, Ozzy didn't have the
album sales to make many demands at all. He was fresh out of Black
Sabbath, which had done well, but was unproven as a solo artist. His
first album did *ok*, had a hit with "Crazy Train", but as I recall
wasn't terribly exciting in terms of sales. I think it sold a lot more
    after Randy was killed.

He pretty much had too. For a couple of reasons...one, he accepted the
CBS deal moreso out of need. Ozzy was "fired" from Sabbath, and at the
time was also in the midst of a *serious* substance abuse problem. He
definitely did not have the resources or mental capacity to be making
wise decisions, or in the position professionally to make grandios
requests in his record contract. When CBS signed him, they def. got
the better end of the stick by taking advatage of his personal situation.

If any one has a copy of THE TWO SIDES OF OZZY OSBOURNE,released
only in Japan,I would like to get my hands on that also.It has a song
on it with Randy Rhoads playing guitar called You Looking at Me Looking
    at You,it's a cool song,I have a good copy of it.It's a studio
recording,it sounds great with the usual excellent guitar solo from
Randy. The same record also has a song called One Up The B Side with
Jake E. Lee on guitar,it jams. This is also a very hard to find song.
Both of these songs are on THE TWO SIDES OF OZZY OSBOURNE.One side
features Randy with Ozzy, the other side is Jake with Ozzy.

I've heard about half a dozen different stories about "Tribute" - about
half making Ozzy out as the good guy, and about half making him out
as the opportunist at Randy's expense.

The most reliable publication I've seen such a story in, Guitar Player,
says that it was Delores Rhoads (Randy's mother) who actually stopped
Ozzy from putting out an album (or at least that's how I remember it).

I don't know what to make of Ozzy Osbourne. In print, he paints
himself as a devout Christian and all that, and believe me, I'm no
Tipper Gore fan, but it seems like everything he's ever done had such
a very clear-cut satanistic reference that's it's hard to give Ozzy
    any benefit of the doubt.

I mean, look at the cloesup shots of him in his new video.

It doesn't bother me at all that he does this, it only bothers me that
    he denies it.

The only thing I find interesting about Ozzy is that he's still
popular. He's more of a cartoon now than he was when he was singing
with the Sabs. At least the Sabs stood their ground and managed to
influence every teenager within the Seattle city limits, while solo Oz
seems to be simply following the pack.

His lyrics are so inane it's hard to figure out *what* he might be
talking about, but there definitely some pseudo-Christian views in
early Sabs material, references to the occult were largely in the
horror movie vein (i.e. mess around and you'll end up in deep s**t) and
lots of paeans to drug use ("Sweet Leaf", "Snowblind", "Paranoid",
    etc.).

Whatever Ozzy's motivation for releasing "Tribute", I'm glad he did.
It was nice to hear a little more of Randy Rhodes' playing even though
    he was gone.

I agree about Ozzy being like a cartoon, or a puppet, after leaving
Sabbath. Notice that Sabbath also seemed to catch the same disease
after he left, ride the "satan" banddeathwagon. Oh well, what can you
    say?

221.70THE MYSTERIOUS WRITING IS CALLED `RUNES'COMET::JENSENTMon Aug 03 1992 20:5330
Disregard what I said in .65, it wasn't quite right.

The writing around the pictures on SPEAK OF THE DEVIL is called
`Runes', as used in J.R.R. Tolkien's book `Lord of the Rings'.

The entire cover design for SPEAK OF THE DEVIL was by Steve Joule
who at the time was under the impression that the album was going to
be a live one with Randy Rhoads, not a bunch of old Sabbath tunes.

The front cover around Ozzy's puking head says:
HOWDY. DIAL-A-DEMON PRODUCTIONS IN CONJUNCTION WITH GRAVEYARD GRAPHICS,
PROUDLY PRESENTS THE MADMAN OF ROCK DUMPING IN EL SATANOS TOILETTIO,
    REAL TASTY...

The center of the cover with Ozzy and the midget says:
A TRIBUTE TO RANDY RHOADS, AXEMAN. `THAT KID WAS MY LIFELINE, Y'KNOW?
HE WAS SUCH A DYNAMIC PLAYER AND I'D RATHER NOT TALK ABOUT IT ANYMORE
BECAUSE IT CUTS ME UP EVERY DAY OF MY LIFE'. RANDY RHOADS REST IN PEACE
    AND LOVE.

The picture of the band in the circle on the back of the cover says:
OZZY OSBOURNE, ROCK AND ROLL MADMAN.

All the rest of the stuff on the back cover is meaningless
scribbling to fill up the space, except, if you look closely, you'll
find the words No Hidden Messages within all of the scribbling.

Randy Rhoads lives forever through the music.

What you find underneath the lyrics on the inside cover of Diary Of

the scribbling. The rest of the symbols I will find out what they mean

You are correct sir! The symbols on Diary Of A Madman are NoT from
any J.R.R. Tolkein book. The symbols at the top of the inside cover
above the lyrics mean nothing more than Friday and Saturday, according
to Steve Joule, who also designed the Diary cover and inside cover and
the Blizzard of Ozz cover's. What a joke on all the bible beaters and

Saw this note regarding R.R., so I thought I'd add this.
Recently I came by "Quiet Riot - The Randy Rhoads Years"
This is a re-done job of the old QR inports with Randy
on them. I read an article in one of those guitar rags
a while ago concerning this project. Kevin DuBrow, the
singer there, gave all the info. I guess he did quite
a reassembling, if you will, of these tunes. According to
this article, Dubrow said that on one of the tunes Randy
always wanted to use a wah-wah pedal but at the time didn't
have the cash to afford one. So what did K.D. do to accomodate
this? He actually played back this portion of this particular
song, pluged it through a wah-wah, and played the wah with
his foot and re-recorded it!!!! Can you believe it?
Any other comments? I wish I had more about this, but I
lent out the mag. Any other comments?

I have this tape of Jimi and Buddy Miles and me jamming in the basement
of my high school back in 68. The only weird thing is that Jimi passed
out before we started recording, so when we remastered the tapes, I
played the guitar parts because I knew he wanted some guitar on the
    tapes.

Been thinking about having Kevin DuBrow do the vocals that Jimi was
    planning on doing.

By the way, on another track off "The Randy Rhoads Years"
Kevin Dubrow didn't like the way he originally sang the song
so he re-recorded his vocal track up to his "exacting" standards
    for this project.
I once read that Randy didn't even like the QR I+II albums.
He said that they were too pop-orientated. Nice of Kevin
DuBrow to take it upon himself to re-release all his chopped-up
tunes Randy hated. But then again, $$$$$$$$$$$$. There you

Made a trip to "Headlines" (my favorite store for a
number of reasons) in downtown Nashua, New Hampshire over
the weekend. There I ran across an ultra-rare Ozzy
performance with Randy on guitar preserved on VHS. Needless
to say, I snagged it on the spot. The tape is entitled
"Ozzy & Randy: After Hours" and features live performances
of "I Don't Know", "Suicide Solution", "Crazy Train", and
"Mr. Crowley" as well as some interview stuff from '81 and
a couple of live Sabbath numbers from 1975.
The overall quality of the videotape is medium at best.
However, to see Randy jammin with Ozzy, Rudy Sarzo, and Tommy
Aldridge is a rarity that's well worth it. Next time you see
the video for "Crazy Train" check out the guitar solo section
where Randy flies into the frenzy of hammer-ons. Note the
blue curtain backdrop behind the group. It's this "After
Hours" performance where they took that short clip from to
    slide into the MTV video.
"Headlines" is a cool place to check out. They got quite
a few rare concert tapes along with some that are not so rare.
If you're into something different, then this place is for you.
