    Im no expert but it's my understanding that from a sound perspective,
    you get a better sound from the amp/effects when hooked up through the
    loop as opposed to between the instrument and the amp. Can't remember
    where I heard this but Im sure I did.

	Some effects sound like garbage when introduced prior to high-gain
	preamp stages, so they are generally placed in the effects loop if
	one is available. Delay and wah type effects are examples of these.
	If the amp isn't capable of producing high-gain or high distortion
	levels, then it becomes a non issue.

	Other than that, all that's important is making sure that there is
	a reasonable match between the expected input and output levels of
	the device(s) being connected.

This is my theory.

Since the pre-amp signal is now going to your effects, you
can now control the signal strength and eq (treble,mid,bass)
going into your effects.  You'll also be sending the "drive"
signal from your amp into your effects.  

It's not necesarily better, it's just different.   It's the same
principle by which you get a different sound out of your effects 
by putting them in a different order. 

Personally, I don't use the effects loop because it makes things
too complicated.  Do you want the controls on the amp to be 
adjustable without effecting the effects or do you want them to 
be interdependent?

actually, re -1 I find the opposite to be
the case with me..

since I bought my new marshall with 2 effects loops 
(one serial loop, one paralell loop) I'm getting MUCH
better results out of my rackmount Digitech  than I 
ever had before.. 

I  Was never happy with what the digitech
did to the overall sound when I use dmy old amp
with the digitech in-line...  always gave the sound  
a processed-in-the-tank overtone.

but now, running this through the paralell loop of
my JTM60 it's totally transparent, and a lot easier
to control.  (one real nice option on the Marshall
JTM60's paralell effects loop it has a dry/effect control
so there is much more control than when using
a standard effects loop.  but even in the serial loop,
I'm able to use the effects with out a change in my
gutiars tone...

So I would offer that it's not all that complicated,
and for me anyway, it's working a hell of a lot better
than ever before..  So I would suggest experimenting,
and see what you come up with.

    Yes effects sounds much better when you use effects-loop except
    for example wah wah pedals i tried my Morley wah wah and it sounded
    like shit in the effect-loop   ;-)
