2689.0. "Boss -80 watt micro amp $169" by SALEM::TAYLOR_J (Pickin' and a grinnin') Wed Mar 10 1993 11:42

Yesterday I recieved the Musicians friend catalog that had listed
a BOSS-80 80 watt rms amp. This amp is about the size of a Gallion
Creager (sp?) anp w/2 6 1/2 inch speakers and it was marked down
from 395.00 to 169.00. Has anyone heard of this amp before ?
    seems like a H*ll of a deal.

...and I've been looking over these two catalogs as of late. They
must send out a lot of them suckers! AMS does tend to have better
    "blow-outs" for discontinued items.

    ordered.

Hey...I would like to know about this amp too!! I like those lil'
gadgets. If its sounds anything like a GK I'd go for it!! That's a
darn good price...Does any local music stores carry them??? It would
just be something to put on my keychain.

American Musical Supply, check the mail order sources note (411) for
the 800 number. They'll send you one for free. If you order something
from 'em (heck, probably even if you don't, I don't think I ever have),
they'll send 'em to you forever. Nice color catalog. Prices are ok,
slightly below average retail but for the most part nothing real
special. The blow-out items often have real good prices though.

I think AMS is the cheapest on most stuff compared to the other big
catalog places. Music Emporium is way higher in price. Musicians
Friend matches them on a few things like stomps. The cheapest catalog
place I found was Woodwin and Brasswind", but they make up for the
extra savings with their shipping charges.
Of course If someone knows anyone catalog place cheaper than AMS, I'd
sure be interested!!!! For Items I checked on (4tracks, compressors)
Thoroughbread was higher, AMS matched Sweetwater sound.
I've also heard that Sam Ash is selling things below cost because of
the competition from other places. Just my opinions here.

I think the question of who's catalog prices are lower is irrevelant.
Like just about any music store, the prices are negotiable. I've
gotten Musician's Friend to come down well over $100 on the price of an
amp by comparing their price to other outlets (their price was whacked
anyway, it was higher then any of the local music stores!)

2689.14I've purchased a few items there...SALEM::STIGLook in the eye!!Thu Mar 11 1993 15:207
Yeah..AMS has good prices. I bought my GK 250ML there. It was around
$50 cheeper to get it thru the catalog than it was to buy it at the
music store. And, I had received it in less than a week if I remember.
I like the delivery time- Fast!!

Greg is right. Probably what I should say is "at face value" AMS prices
are lower...and they seem to have the BIGGEST catalog of anyone I have
seen. Greg has more guts than me. I've never even thought of asking
them to come down on the price. Of course, maybe I shouldn't when I
    am ordering picks. :-)

I've been known to be incredibly cheap at times.

2689.17mini amp mini reviewSALEM::TAYLOR_JPickin' and a grinnin'Wed Mar 17 1993 10:5913
Well the amp arrived , and its 80 watts as billed. this unit is about
30 pounds ( heavy for it's small size ) and really cranks loudly.
the distortion (gain) from the amp is what you'd expect from a
transistor amp and there is no reverb, but I find that by using my
Zoom 9000 effects the unit sounds phenominal(sp) . The unit ,unlike
the mini GK amp doesn't sound overcompressed and if you have outboard
effects the amp offers alot for the money. $169 for an easily portable
LOUD amp is a great deal IMHO.

I take back everything I said about AMS. I got Music Emporiums new
catalog and they beat AMS on quite a few things. However, AMS has a
    nice clearance section.

    Re: .18

What else is new? I get all of the usual catalogs, and it seems that
the price breaks from one to the other sort of even out in the long
run, one will be higher for one piece but lower for another. You
really should get used to checking prices from all the sources.

For example, I ordered some speaker stands from AMS two weeks ago. The
price from Music Emporium was identical but the shipping rates
differed...one based shipping on total $$ amount, the other was on the
weight. I think I saved something like 25 cents by ordering from AMS.
    Hardly significant, though!
