2665.0. "Jamming with the Dawg, an editorial..." by WOLVER::SDANDREA (Send lawyers, guns, and money!) Tue Jan 19 1993 17:06

Ok, here's the Jamming info-pile. I'm gonna include the ones that I
have experienced, you guys do the same; it'll make it easier for me to
find 'em when I travel. If this note is redundant (Coop-Greg) just
move the stuff to the jamming note that probably already exists.

    Have strat will travel......

2665.1Al's.....WOLVER::SDANDREASend lawyers, guns, and money!Tue Jan 19 1993 17:1113
Al's Pumphouse, Greenville, South Carolina. Used to be on Wednesday
nights and led by Mac McCloud and his band. Good, friendly jam, but
Mac is in charge and don't you forget it (catch my drift). On a good
night, you can hear some real pro's and some real beginners, and
they're all havin' a ball. This is where me and Coop got Blair-Unit
drunk and made him debut his first stage appearance. He played
Stormy Monday and got off! Small club, smokey, no fighting, pretty
clean crowd. Steve Morse, Toy Caldwell, and many "real" pros get
    booked there.

Don't know if it still happens.....

2665.2Papa's....WOLVER::SDANDREASend lawyers, guns, and money!Tue Jan 19 1993 17:1512
Papa's Blues Cellar, One Lawson Lane, Burlington, Vermont. It happens
on Thursday nights....electric blues jam. Blue Fox has the house band
and if ya tell him yer there, he'll bring ya up! I've been hitting
this one recently (last 2 weeks) and may only get one or two more
opportunities as the BTO plant is closing and my business there will
come to a close. Nice college crowd, clean club, incredibly
attractive waitress and bar tender (both female). Papa is there
nightly and sits in on drums when the crowd chants loud and long
enough. Blue Fox has a killer blues man on axe sit in...name is Scotty
something, and his lix make me cry.

2665.3Hot Lix.....WOLVER::SDANDREASend lawyers, guns, and money!Tue Jan 19 1993 17:2012
Hot Lix Guitar Shop on RT 301 in Waldorf, Maryland does a blues jam and
a heavy metal jam once a month. They open up a room over the store,
put up a stage, stock it with drums and amps, and turn it over to the
crowd! You need to show up with a group or create one that night as
there is no house band. A "moderator" keeps it moving and the limit is
3 songs. Bring yer own instrument. I've been once, hooked up with a
bass player, drummer and another axe man, huddled together for about 3
    minutes
and then played Little Wing, Red House, and Killing Floor like we'd
been together for 5 years. Fun!

2665.4Fred. VA....WOLVER::SDANDREASend lawyers, guns, and money!Tue Jan 19 1993 17:226
The Irish Brigade in Fredericksburg, VA has open mic night on
Wednesdays. I haven't been yet, but I heard you could go and create a
group out of the audience if yer not into the solo act thing. Might
    try it one night.

2665.5Harper's Jams, Allston, MATECRUS::ROSTGive me Beefheart or give me deathFri Jan 22 1993 16:0015
    Harper's Ferry in Allston, MA

They have a jam hosted by Chris "Stovall" Brown every Sunday night,
starts about 9 PM. There's a signup list and there are LOTS of
regulars, so your amount of time onmstage is likely to be short.
Players range from incompetent (but loud) to sublime. Harper's throws a
party for the jammers once a year, with a free spread and complimentary
T-shirts with the names of all the jammers on the back (small print!).
This is a good jam for first-timers to the Boston scene, as some of the
other area jams are not as open to total unknowns.

Also a Tuesday night jam with Chance Gardner that I can't comment on,
    having never been.

Used to be called the "400 CLUB" not sure of its name now. It's on
RT.97 in Salem N.H. The sign out front says theres a blues jam on
Monday nights. Has anyone checked this out, I've been meaning to go
but I have school on Mondays and by the time I get out I'm not up
for the ride from Nashua over. If I didn't have to pass my house on
the way I might keep going.

so I could verify my lans for thursday night (weekly blooz jam) and the
operator says that PAPA'S CLOSED DOWN! Ack! Guess I'll bring my axe
anyway...think I'm gonna hook up with Boom, Buck, Bill_the_cat, and
make sum noise on wednesday night.....sigh.

Well, since I can't find any sort of "formal" Blues Jam for tonight
(and one that isn't a 100 miles away), looks like I'll be having Mr.
Dawg and Mr. B()()M over to my place for a little jamming at my home.
Looks like Bill_the_Cat and Kevin McDonough *may* be joining us...but
    they're both not sure.

Regardless, I think we might play for a bit, and then head down to the
Sit n Bull in Maynard ctr and catch Ronnie Earl doing his thing. The
Bull is all of right down the street from my house!!

Darn! we shoulda made a tape! Cat mentioned it right at the end of the
    session, too. Sheesh!

It was an axe-0-rama last night. Buck, Bill the Cat, B{}{}M, Kevin
Mac, and meeself. 3 pointy headstocks, 2 Les Pauls, 2 Marshalls, and
the Peavey from Hell all in Buck's basement. If you took all the notes
played and lined 'em up end to end, the string would reach the sun! I
was impressed by all the talent, hospitality, and just plain nice guys.

A good time was had by all. 8^)

    while surrounded by shredders!)
2665.14POWDML::BUCKLEYRide the CycloneThu Feb 11 1993 10:3216
Steve has really good blues chops, and a great ear. I was impressed
by those tastefully chosen notes! 8^)

Thanks to all for stopping by my humble abode ... wish it could have
been a tad warmer, but you know how it is (winter, et al..)...

I liked hearing all the tones and styles in the room. Winners in
my opinion?? Dawg's Les Paul thru Cat's Marshall JCM 900 -- KILLER
blues tone!! Also noteworthy was Boom's custom-shop BC Rich thru
the 5150. Then again, Kevin's LP through the 5150 didn't sound too
shabby either (and I think the amp had enough gain and bite even for
    Kevin!) 8^)

Yup, pointy headstocks all over the place last night! Good thing the
'dawg and I were there to represent "normal" guitars. 8^) When you
get Les Paul-like action on one of them pointy jobbers you might have
    something!

Again, some great players in this file. We even had matching JCM900's
there! Buck's right, that 5150 could hurt people! More gain than I
    could use!

Did I really see BOOM plug right into an amp and play??!!! I thought
it was against the rack-o-doom oath or something. Nice playing, too!

And don't let the 'dawg fool you with that "slowhand and the
shredders" stuff! He's a fine player and doesn't have to take a back
    seat to anyone!!!

deny it....I couldn't even watch to see what the hell you guys were

The Marshalls were very impressive, and I liked the feel (but nott he
headstocks) of the Ibanez's, Buck's Peavey is a kicker!

A nit; after the Cat played my Les Paul, he said:" I gotta get me one of
these to go with my Marshall"

    yes!

Yes, I even agree -- The Cat would do much better with a LP
through that Marshall of his than that Ibanex he has. It
just has too much of a "Metal" sound for what he is trying to
    do musically.

If I had given it some thought I would've remembered how many
other tunes you can jam to. (Allman Bros. is always great for
stretching out a jam). As usual I thought of a few others today on the
way into class. That's what I get for playing in a "structured" band.

2665.31KDX200::COOPERHello me, it's me again!Thu Feb 11 1993 18:468
Well, they don't work for me, thats for sure.

Saw a good example of why with the opening band for Dream Theater:

The guy had THREE vintage Marshall tops - they sounded pretty good too.
But every time he wanted a bit of a squeel, he had to run over and kneel
in front of his speakers and hold his guitar out. Thats unacceptable for
me. Even my little lamey combo squeels...
2665.32GOES11::G_HOUSEIt's NOT a tumor!!Thu Feb 11 1993 19:1212
All he had to do was add a little compression stomp...feedback for
    days...

Even if this was an issue for me (it's not), I'd consider the time I
spend doing harmonic squeals as opposed to the time I spend enjoying
the ultimate crunch rhythm sound. The squeals can't conceivably
    compare.

Besides that...harmonic squeals are *so* 80's, totally passe these
days. You're dating yourself...get current, dude!

Or hook up with an amp that'll do it all by itself... If I paid
marshall money - I'd want an 'widget' that screamed out of the box, not
one in need of a $40 stomp box to make it work properly.

Tell that to Petrucci of Dream Theater, dood. DT *is* the 90's -
That Upper-Washington-State-grunge is a crampy period. :-) Gain will

Tke the "F.E Turnpike" (also know as Rt. 3) north to Exit 7E (Nashua),
continue straight at the traffic light past the 99 Resturaunt and the
Comfort Inn (you'll see this on your left) to "old" route 3 which
happens to be at the end of this road so you can only go left or right.
You'll need to make a left turn at the light and follow "old" route 3
into Merrimack. The "Country Gourmet" restaraunt will be on your left
side as you're driving north and Stormy Monday's is in the same
    building.

Bear in mind that while the town of Merrimack is less than a mile from
this left turn onto old Route 3, the Country Gourmet is quite a ways
from there - maybe 6-8 miles. You pass my alma mater, Anheuser-Busch,
on the right, then Hannah Jack's on the left, then go over a bridge in
what I think is downtown Merrimack (there's a fire station there), and
then the Country Gourmet is on the left.

Just so you don't think it's right there at the light.

Yeah, isn't it quicker if you head all the way up to Exit 11 (Merrimack),
and then take old Rt. 3? Why take the backroad the whole way....

Undoubtedly! But at least we'll all be in the same (wrong) place! 8^)

I went through this with db when his band played there; it was over a year
ago, but I'm almost positive that you can go all the way up to Exit 11,
get over to Rt. 3 (about 100 yards away from the bottom of the ramp), then
take that north for about a mile until you hit Stormy Monday. db, does that
sound correct?

Yes, but you left out "how" to get over to Rt 3.

Coming off the Everett Turnpike at exit 11 you come to a light at
the bottom of the ramp. Make a right turn at that light and then
go about 150 yards to the next light at a T-interesection with the
Hannah Jack Tavern on the left.

Make a left at that light.

Then you go a couple of miles (not at all sure how many but more than
1 and less than, say 7) and the road does a semi-sharp S curve over
the Souhegan River. The curve is shortly after a shopping plaza on
the left that has a chinese restaurant. Just after the bridge over
the Souhegan you'll see a fire station on the left and the
Country Gourmet/Stormy Monday cafe is the NEXT establishment on
the left. You'll see the sign out front.

I should mention that this is a NICE place although kinda small and
with most seats having an obstructed view of the area they use for
a stage. It is NOT a smokey, dingy bar inhabited by smokey, dingy
    low-life drunks. ;-)

And the food there is terrific. I recommend the cajun jambalaya, but tell

    bland).

Well, those of you who did not show missed the best jam/get together
that I ever experienced. We outdid ourselves last night, and a great
turout filled the place up! Lessee:

1.attendees : Steve D (me), Fred Abatelli, Dave Hickernell, Brad Page,
dBlickstein, Rick Calgani, Alan Starr (I think; he *said* he was), Rob
? (the drummer from Citadel), and Jeff Cooper (mystery guest)
Fred's brother in law, 1982 techno-pop recording artsit Dane Conovan
was with us as well. I'm a li'l sleepy this AM, hope I didn't forget
anyone. There was also a host of other musicians of fine quality. We
got to hear a real variety of blues/jazz styles.

    2. The DECjams included Me, Fred, Dave, and the house drummer featuring
Alan Starr, and Dane doing Mustang Sally (Dave on vocals), Have You
Ever Loved a Woman (Alan on vocals), Slow Down (Dane on vocals), and
Key to the Hiway(Fred on vocals). Next group featured Fred, Brad,
Rick, and the house drummer doing some SRV, and a rock tune that Brad
sang (Fred sang the SRV tune). Me and Coop and Rick and db did The
Thrill is Gone and Stormy Monday. Hope I remembered it all.

    3. Highlights of the evening:

    * The house equipment plus Fred's PV was outstanding.
    * The house band was great. Their drummer was incredible!
    * 5 minutes after I've met Alan Starr, I'm showing him pictures of my
family and he expresses a special interest in my oldest daughter. I
won't repeat his comment, and I *may* forgive him....someday. 8^)
    (geez!)
    * Fred's chops were blisteringly sweet last night; i bow to him.
    * Brad Page is the closet slide player from hell! i bow to him, too!
    * db wowed the place with his keyboard prowess, super, super sound and
    chops.
    * Dave and Rick showed the house band how to play bass;bottom city!
    * Rick tried to see how far a patch cord would stretch!
    * Alan, Fred, Brad, Dane, and Dave sang their hearts out, lyrics or NO
    lyrics, a fine job!
    * Dane's antics and his inflated *air* guitar was a crowd pleaser on
    Slow Down
    * db nearly rocked his kybd over on Thrill, literally!
    * Coop played a jap strat, did NOT wear spandex, played a Fender amp,
used a Tube Screamer, and SANG, yes SANG The Thrill is gone! You
shoulda been there, folks! (I promised I wouldn't tell, sorry Coop, you
    know I had to).
    * opps, Rob the drummer played with Fred, Rick, Brad....his solo on the
rock tune that Brad sang was super!

The crowd was great. There was a ton of really good music to be heard.
Most tunes and solos were followed by yells, hoots, screams and
ovations of applause. It was a special eveining for me. The
comeradery was great; it was good to finally meet Alan and see and play
with Coop, Dave, Rick, Fred, meet and play with Rick and Brad and db
    and Dane and everyone!

2665.82 Stratmania! BRAT::PAGETue Oct 19 1993 12:1549
It was a most rewarding evening, I must say. It was great to meet
you all. Though it was definitely "Digital Night" for the last half
of the evening, there were some great performances from the non-Deccies
who showed up, particularly the female vocalist and that guy with the
cool Be-Bop chops and the Les Paul.

Speaking of guitars, his Les Paul and my Tele were the only
non-Strats in the house (not counting Dane's "hollow-body Flying V").
It never ceases to amaze me how many great sounds can be squeezed
out of a Strat; all those players, each one getting their own sound
out of the same basic guitar. I was gonna bring a Strat, but I'm glad
    I brought the Tele...

Steve neglected to mention that HE put in the best performance
of the evening.... he wins the "Note Of The Night" award. One of
those perfect moments when your guitar, amp, volume, tone, and
fingers are in perfect cosmic alignment. Those moments are few and
far between, I think, and hat's off to Steve for capturing it.

I had a great time trading solos with Fred. Rick laid down a
great bass break in the Chuck Berry tune... I wish I had let you
play longer! I've been suffering from a cold for 2 weeks, and I
think singing a song (if you call that singing...) set my recovery
back another 2 weeks, but it was great to be on stage with you--
my thanks to Fred, Rick and Rob for allowing my Tele'd butt up
    there. I was hoping I wouldn't embarrass you... :-)

It was also equally fun to sit back and watch Dave, Steve, Jeff,
Alan, and db play. (db-- for someone whose "not into blues jams", you
sure know how to rock those keyboards!)

The night ended much too soon... we were just getting warmed up!
I guess it was a monday night, after all, but I wanted to keep going.
I guess I was too pumped up 'cuz I got pulled over in Merrimack on the
way home... I lucked out and got a warning instead of a ticket, though.

Anyway, it was GREAT fun and we should do it again soon. I haven't
gigged in a while so I really enjoy these opportunities. In fact, I've
always wanted to work in a blues band, and this is pretty close. I'm
looking forward to our next session!

On a side note, it was great to be in a room full of DEC guys and
NOT be the one with the longest hair for once. (Thanx, Jeff!)

    Duane and Dickie...

    Keith and Mick...

    Tai and Randy :-)

Last night, I lived the dream of bass players everywhere; backing up
Coop and the Dawg! Those who were there know I'm not exaggerating when
I tell of people falling to their knees and bowing in homage to the
relentless twin guitar onslaught. These guys smoked; I was just glad
to be a part of it.

I had a great time playing with Fred and Brad; we were totally winging it
and it flew (and I give these guys most of the credit). Fred I've heard
before, and he was his usual excellent self; he really makes that Strat
sing. Tone and taste, what more can I say. Brad was a surprise, only
because I'd never met him and I thought I knew most of the hot players
at DEC. His energy on "Reelin and Rockin" was outstanding. Btw Brad,
thanks for the complement on the bass solo; I think I put the fear of
god into Fred when I went free time :-)

I got to listen more to Dawg during the early set with he, Fred and
Dave Hickernell. Very nice. Dawg and Fred complemented each other
well; two Strats, very different tones. Dawg, I wanna hear you on
the Les Paul sometime. Special recognition to Dave's bass work during
this set; Dave, you were tight, funky, and pumped that bottom. It
was impossible to keep my feet still. In fact, this whole lineup
sounded real tight and rehearsed; not what you usually get at a jam.

Db seemed to be everywhere, sitting in on several lineups. I'm really
glad you decided to come and bring the keyboard. Nice work, especially
on "Stormy Monday" I recall. I was dying to get up with you later and
sit in on "Black Magic Woman"; too bad the house band wasn't hip to it.

Also don't want to forget Alan. Great vocals, but next time bring the
    axe man.

Special thanks to the house band bass player, for almost letting me take
his amp home with me :-)

Hey Coop, was that a big green bug on the floor near you during our set?
You kept trying to step on it :-) :-)

The Stormy Monday is a very cool deal; I plan on going back. Nice room,
very receptive audience, and the jam situation is real low key and
friendly. As someone remarked to me heading for the parking lot:
"On a Monday night... in Merrimack! Who new?"

of Alan and Steve. The most notable absentee was Brian Rost, but maybe
next time. Most pleasant surprise was db who brought his keys after all,
and almost knocked them over in his enthusiasm during one tune.

The outstanding moments for me were Fred's playing on several tunes,
Brad's playing and singing, Dane's singing (what a wild man!) and air
guitar moves. And then there was Steve. After he warmed up, the Bulldawg
was *on fire*, particularly on "The Thrill Is Gone", where he and Fred's
amp held The Note for maybe twelve bars. He screamed through the next
verse, then laid down this terrific rhythm for Coop, who played well in
spite of "there's no distortion up there." The woman singer (Jodi?) was
outstanding, as were all the non-DEC guitarists who played.

Alan, Jeff, db, Rob and Rick were terrific as well. The house band was
wonderful, very sparse and laid back and tasteful. And Alan's comment,
well, let's just say his taste is better than his choice of words. %^)

    The low point was my own playing, and I was happy to have Rick take over;
guess I should practice now and then after all.

> Special recognition to Dave's bass work during
> this set; Dave, you were tight, funky, and pumped that bottom.

Uh, thanks, Rick, but you gotta lay off the hearing-altering drugs, man.
I sure liked your playing, though, and for all the expensive gear the
house bassist had, I liked your P-bass tone better, too.

I was also kind of amazed at how unimpressive the house guitarist was
on "Black Magic Woman", considering how good he had just demonstrated
himself to be on SRV. Just not his style, I guess.

They stopped the jam at 11:30 - too soon, even if I did get home late.
But thanks, Brad, for keeping the local constabulary busy while the rest
of us sped home. Oh, and don't get your hopes up for photos, guys; my
camera apparently malfunctioned for the nice lady who volunteered to shoot
us while we played. She says she got 5 or 6, but she took more than 20,
leaving me no film at eleven, as it were (though the camera always works
    for me).

So Steve, since is seems to be your visits that incite this group, when's
    your next trip up?

Well, I kinda doubt Jeff's relatives would wanna see me much, and I
doubt his cost center would want to finanace training for me back there
    either...

Unfortunately, my parents live in Las Vegas, my wife's in Raleigh,
North Carolina, and that's where most of our vacation time goes.

Training? Ha. I've worked for DEC for six years now and have had a
grand total of 2 (count 'em, two) official work related training
courses (that doesn't count the bs ones like conducting interviews and
Six Sigma, I'm sure to get flamed for that). It seems that I pretty
much broke the bank on what Ed. Services has to offer related to my job
about 5 years ago. The last real training course I had was 2-3 years
ago and it wasn't even an Ed. Services class. And if that weren't bad
enough, Colorado Springs is a major US training facility and it's hard
to get any training anywhere else when you're based here.

Besides that, I'm untrainable, I always miss the newspaper.

> Dave, you develop those photos yet?

    I haven't picked them up yet. I guess I'm afraid to because I don't
think many (any?) turned out too well. Ya see, I'm sort of particular
about my photography, and was very upset to have to watch that nice
lady who offered to take our pictures do so. My flash malfunctions
from time to time, and I know how to fix it, but she didn't, so she
used up most of the (one) roll I brought trying to get a couple of good
ones; all this was while we were playing the first time. She brought
me the camera in between tunes and I fixed the flash. I handed it back
to her all set up for direct flash; the next time I saw her she was
trying to bounce the flash off the ceiling, which was maybe 18 feet
high, very off-white and slanted. At least once she was shooting at us
through the stair railing but the flash was pointed at (and blocked by)
the railing itself. Sigh. So I don't have much hope. %^(

I'll pick them up tonight, though. Next time I'll bring more film and
I won't lend my camera to anyone else.

I picked up the photos mentioned in .146 last night, and I have to say
they aren't as awful as I feared. The nice lady did produce some
interesting effects - like a banister shadow right across my face,
Steve's and Fred's - but out of her twenty shots she got four or five
keepers. I'll make copies for you, Dawgie-daddy. The worst thing
about them is the above-mentioned subjects, but whaddya gonna do?

She got one of Alan and db hanging out at the bar, thus proving that
*they're* not the same person, but all the ones of Dane are without his
hollow-body Flying V, and pretty fuzzy to boot. That may not be an
artifact of the photography, however. She took all her band shots of
the tunes I played on, so nothing of db playing, or Rick or Brad.
Maybe it's just as well, though. My wife has already met Steve and
Fred - I don't want to ruin my reputation further. %^)

Use tapewound strings and install the foam rubber bridge mute.
Turn the tone control all the way down to 0. Set the treble on the

Good night last night....same great house band and a decent turnout.
Brad Page, myself, Dave Hickernell, Sakman, Andy and Sandy Foster, Alan
Starr, and Lale, and db sans kybd were in attendance; oh yeah and
    Coops' spirit.

Brad, Dave and I (with house drummer) opened up with a few numbers that
featured Brad doing slide work with somebody's beer bottle while
strolling thru the crowd. I got to play my Les Paul thru Sakman's
Fender champ. That puppy is a baby Twin! I had the volume on 11 and
my Tube Screamer punched in...what tone...25 watts of tube warmth!
Brad sang both songs and pretty much was the star of the opening show
with his tasty choice of obscure songs and his nice chops and slide
work on a really neat looking '79 strat!

Later on Sak and Dave sat in with house drummer and guitarist. Sak
played his Guild "ES335" style axe thru his Champ and really showed
what warm means! Nice job, Sakman. As usual, Dave punched in the
bottom with his EB Gibson and drove the groove wh the house drummer.
Dave, how come you get *two* turns to sit in?

It was really nice to meet Lale. We spent about half an hour learning
to pronounce her names, and I was congratulated on my getting it right
on the first try! She was the bright spot in the back of the room
amongst the "buttfull" of Deccie noters.

Andy and Sandy were good company too. Couldn't talk Andy into playing,
however I left around 11:00, so I dunno what happened after
    that...Andy?

Alan's claim to fame for last night (at least before i left) was the
fact that he brought Lale....for that I let him gaze at my daughter's
photograph again......he was rather well behaved....suspicious!

db showed up and we talked about Steve Morse! He did take some rather
serious abuse about how right he is on blooz being boring...heh,
heh...and he also took some abuse about his legs; at least I think
those were legs sticking out of those volleyball shorts!

At one point, the "be-bop" jazz player was sitting in with the house
band, and they were(again) laying down a serious groove. In the middle
of the jam, Dave notices that the bass player and guitarist are doing
some chops in unison, and he says: "I thought this tune was just a jam,
it sounds like they've rehearsed this song or they both know it" I
look at Dave and say: "of course they know the song; it's the *JAZZ*
song!" Maybe db *is* right? :*]

I had a great time, and I'd like to hear what happened after I left.

    Looking forward to next trip!

Oh yeah, i forgot to mention. I've recieved feedback that makes me
wonder about the impression that my noting creates about me. The first
time i met Dave, his first words to me were: "I thought you'd be more
swarthy". Lale's first comment is:"I thought you were an *old* man"
(followed by several more pleasant comments) 8).

Well, the Bulldawg beat me to the first review. I guess ya gotta get
up pretty early... Here's my critique (and excuse the duplication):

The latest DawgJam is history, and I had a great time. DEC's attendees
included Brad Page, Dave ("Sakman") Sakelaris, Andy and Sandy Fraser,
Alan Starr, Lale, Dave Blickstein and the Bulldawg.

But where were Rick and Edd? I was the only Gibson bassist present!

Brad, Steve, the house drummer and I started off with a couple of tunes.
The guitarists sounded great, though Steve didn't bless us with a one-
note solo this time. Maybe the Les Paul didn't inspire him like his
Strat, but the Dawg was as tasteful as ever. He could have been louder,
but maybe Sakman's Champ 25 wasn't as loud as he claimed. Brad brought
his Strat this time, a very interesting (and nice) color scheme, and
enlivened the set with screaming leads, some beer bottle slide playing
    and great singing.

A couple of sets later, Sakman and I did a few more, with Dave using his
nice old Starfire V; this guy can really play, too. The house guitarist
provided the vocals and his usual outrageous playing.

There were a lot of very good players there, as always. I was
disappointed, though, that Andy, Sandy, Alan and db didn't come armed; I
tried to get Sandy to borrow my bass, but no dice. But I had brought my
other weapon and got some embarrassing pictures of everyone.

My award for the best bass sound goes to the club owner (manager?) who
played a Music Man - lethal tone! He also had, attached to the bridge-
end strap button, a net bag with two tennis balls in it, unsubtley
completing the look of this already-phallic instrument. %^)

Most unusual instrument of the night was the lefthanded bass player who
played a lefthanded Jazz Bass - strung righthanded! Took me awhile to
figure out why his playing style looked so different.

Best line of the night: one of the jazzier jam groups was up, and the
guitar and bass were playing some riff in unison. I said to Steve,
"Hey, they're playing together, like they both know the same tune!"
He replied, "It's the jazz song." %^) db liked that one, too; he
    almost showed some emotion.

Steve actually showed everyone (including A-lung himself) pictures of
his daughters again, just to illustrate Alan's good taste. Alan was
very polite... this time. And one of the highlights was Steve trying
to guess Lale's nationality. "French?" %^)

All in all, a great time. We even took Coop's name in vain when everyone
    pulled out their neon chords.

> Dave, how come you get *two* turns to sit in?

What can I say, I was drafted! Sakman requested my presence for his set.

> It was really nice to meet Lale. We spent about half an hour learning
> to pronounce her names, and I was congratulated on my getting it right
> on the first try!

Yeah, Steve showed us that it's easier to pronounce her name if you
pretend it's Italian. "It's all in the wrist," he says. %^)

I had an excellent time last nite and I was not even laste for my
class this morning. I probably will be late going back from this break
    though ;-)

We had a great time. It was very nice meeting Brad and Steve and Sakman
and the Frasers. It was very nice seeing Dave and db again. And of
course Alan; he invalidated all of my excuses and I ended up spending
the entire afternoon with him. Alan, I haven't laughed so much since
the last time we were together.

Music was incredibly good. DEC musicians were as always fantastic but
almost everyone who played there last nite was just as good. The lady
singing the blues.. Does she ever have an incredible voice. Like Alan
said, we could listen to her all nite.

Stormy Mondays is a very nice pub. It is not one of those dark, smokey
places. It is very nicely decorated, cozy, real nice atmosphere and my
god that desert !!! They made a fresh pot of coffee just for me. I
really liked the place a lot.

Dave Hickernell was not a stiff this time, he was just cool.

There were a lot of good liners throughout the night, but this set host
is working awfully slow and I am doing a lot of blind typing so I
    cannot list all of them.

It was funny when Steve guessed me as being a Norweigean ;-) And he
could say my last name without any problems since it is an Italian name
    ;-)

Db and I finally figured out that we were twins seperated at birth.
You can easily tell. We were both wearing shorts and we did not even
plan it ahead of time ;-)

I have got much more to write but maybe later, I really have to go to
my class right now. It was a great evening. Thanks guys.

Let me toss my hat in the ring with a few comments...

It was a little unusual being the first to get up & play-- kind
of caught me off-guard! But it was great to play with Steve and Dave.
Dave, I really like your style. I got a chance to listen to you closer
this time, and I was impressed. Steve, you sounded hot right away...
unlike me, who takes AT LEAST a song before I'm even warmed up. The
Les Paul sounded COOL. By the second tune, I think we started playing
off each other better--- I wish we could have played longer!

And Sakman was cool... his hollowbody-Guild-thru-Fender-Champ sound
stood out among all us Strat clones. I know you weren't happy with
the sound, Dave, but we liked it! And Mr. Hickernell laid down some
nice walking bass. You sounded even better your 2nd time around! I
should also mention the house guitarist who played some nice rhythm,
thick with tremolo a la Jimmie Vaughan.

db showed up in his very progressive shorts after we had already
played. We should have told him "Dave, you missed the Dream Theater
and Steve Morse tunes we played!"

All the other performers were great, too, particularly the female
vocalist who knocked us out with 2 real jazzy tunes.

Too bad Alan, db, Andy and Sandy sat this one out.... and next time,
I want to see Lale singing!

Steve and I tossed around the idea that next time he's up, maybe
we should get together at someone's place, rather than the club, and
have the time to do more than 3 songs a piece... we could even set up
and record. I'm perfectly willing to bring my ADAT; if we can get
enough mikes and mixers and whatever, we could end up with some good
stuff for the GUITAR NOTES tapes... at the very least, we'd have
something to listen and laugh about...

I don't know how y'all feel about that, but it's an option. Some
poor, hapless soul would have to let us into their basement/living
room for the evening... whatta ya think?

2665.331My "review"DREGS::BLICKSTEINMy other piano is a SteinwayTue Aug 22 1995 18:5424
There was quite a bit of talent there, but that's just how things
    are these days.

I thought the long-haired guitarist with the house-band was excellent.
I also thought the kid who finished the evening (whom I hear was about
    19) was very musical although "not quite there" for me, although he
played some great rhythm back up. His last solo was about 30 minutes
too long - although maybe it's because I just wanted to get the hell
    out of there.

Also the (even younger) kid who was standing next to my keyboard was
pretty good soloing but I felt he had a few things to learn about
jamming - he was CONSTANTLY doing chord substitutions which were all
admittedly good, but in a jam setting means that you'll conflict with
all the other folks who are playing straight. So, basically I just
laid out whenever he was playing rhythm.

Wouldn't have been so bad if he had at least done the same thing each
time thru, but so far as I could tell he wasn't.

Our set definitely had some real energy in it. I thought it was
    good/musical.
