2609.0. "Lexicon FX processors..." by KDX200::COOPER (I even use TONE soap !!) Tue Oct 13 1992 19:37

Can some one with the scoop post some info on Lexicons
    LXP1, LXP5, and LXP15 FX processors ?? I'm looking for
    simple stuff:

    - User presets (avail memory)
    - Delays times (LXP5 and LXP15)
    - Specs (s/n ratio, freq-response etc...)
    - Recommendations

    etc...

    Thanks !!

ONe thing I know for sure, you cannot access/edit the user presets
without the option MRC controller. It's factory presets only without
    that.

I was told that a LXP-1 and a LXP-5 together are equal in functionality
    to an LXP-15.

I can't add very much either, but the keyboard player in my last
band had an LXP-15 and it was an excellent sounding unit. It blew
away my Quadraverb Plus (the QV+ was $400 and the LXP-15 was $800,
so I guess you get what you pay for).

The way the LXP-15 presets were set up, it separated the guitar presets
from the keyboard presets from the vocal presets, not that you couldn't
mix and match... it's just what they were intended for.

On the vocal side, there were three presets that left an impression.
    It could do:
    			1. The Munchkins
    			2. Alvin (the chipmunk)
    			3. and Darth Vader

It did these *exactly* and all you did was talk into the mike in a
normal voice... it was pretty funny.

Thanks guys...

The LXP15 is a very attractive unit. What I'd really like to get is
an LXP-1 and an LXP-5, which as Greg mentioned is basically an LXP15.
I would def. want the MRC too. I know a fellow who has an LXP1 and the
MRC for $400. Yum! And I've made a bid on an LXP5 for $250, although
I'm in line behind another guy...

The seperate boxes make life in the studio a little easier.

FYI - I just picked up a LXP-1 verb, and the matching MRC-1 (MIDI Remote
Control)...Should be in my hands in a few days! Sick!

Now to find the LXP-5 cheap...

So Coop, how do you like your Lexicons? I saw an LXP15 in the paper
    yesterday for $400.

Well - I'm not sure yet. I haven't hooked it up !! The MRC is a nifty toy
though!! LXP15 for $400 would be tres-cool... You should snarf it up!

Agreed. For my applications tho, I'm more interested in seperates...
Ergo, and LXP1 and an LXP5 = an LXP15, but in a studio environment,
one could have each box on a seperate buss.

Can you use the LXP-15 as two stereo units like you could with a couple
    of the 1/2 rack units?

No. Bummer eh ??

I gotta find an LXP5 now!!

I'm in line behind two others for one on the usenet
with an offer of $250 (schwing, wing, wing!)

Based on the catalog descriptions I've seen, the LXP-1 and LXP-5 appear
to be pretty much the same thing.

Negative - The LXP-1 is bascially a (nice!) reverb - 1 effect at a time.
The LXP-5 is more of a multiFX (delay, 'verbs, chorus, flange etc...)
allowing 5 FX at once.

After a few days with my LXP-1, it's the finest sounding 'verb I've ever heard.
I wonder what a PCM70 sounds like !?!?!?!
2609.13CAVLRY::BUCKtell me Gray SealMon Nov 09 1992 12:514
A PCM70 is a great unit -- but more along the lines of the LXP-5
(aka, does other things than reverb). It has some cool fx built
into it, and is stereo. A very nice unit for the $$$, and I like this
one WAY better than the basic PCM-60
2609.14KDX200::COOPERI even use TONE soap !!Mon Nov 09 1992 12:574
In addition - The LXP-1 *does* do more than 'verb...Ergo, it's got delays,
modulated effects and a wonderful chorus etc... According to Lexicons
hype though, ideally the LXP-1 is to be used in conjunction with the "5",
and then you have bascially a multi-I/O LXP15. Yeow!
2609.15GOES11::G_HOUSEBig cheese, MAKE me!Mon Nov 09 1992 13:2715
A PCM-70 is really a wonderful sounding unit! The one time I used an
LXP, I thought the reverbs sounded great at first, but after a few
hours with it, they started sounding kind of gritty. Not as bad as an
ART unit I used to have, but not like the smoothness of the PCM-70. I
like my SRV-2000s better too (now that I've figured out how to program
the *&^% things, you can make 'em sound incredibly bad too...).

But in all fairness, I haven't had a chance to heard all these in a
real A/B type comparison situation, so this is just a "seat of the
    pants" sort of feeling.

But you generally get what you pay for, and I'm sure there's a reason
Lexicon can sell ya an LXP-1 or 5 for only $400...

Yeah mon! Bring one of your SRV's down and we can A/B some afternoon!

I haven't really heard an SRV2K yet, save for yours the time we made backups
of my stuff - and they definately needed programmed that day. :)

No kidding. It seems to be pretty easy to get the parameters all
whacked out on these things and make 'em sound bad. My theory is that
the previous owner of that one was using it for strange special
effects, since the programs he had set up in it were too weird not to
    have been done intentionally!

I'm not sure we can do a fair comparison on NS10s though...

2609.24PCM-80STRATA::LUCHTIs it a passion or just a profession?Fri Mar 17 1995 05:5543

Lately I've been seeing the PCM-70 pop up in many pro
as well as non-pro (local!) guitar racks. Since I haven't
seen this I thought I'd throw it here: The PCM-80 Digital
Effects Processor. The folks at Lexicon have made some
substantial changes to the -70. First, and most obvious,
the PCM-80 has been given an industry-standard PCMCIA card
slot. "This will be used for additional memory for storing
programs, and transporting them to another facility. PCMCIA
cards will also be able to house new algorithms and sounds
that we'll develop in the future."
Also, they have taken their "Dynamic MIDI" concept from
the -70 and and moved it to a new level: Dynamic Patching.
"Dynamic Patching makes it possible to go way beyond simple
modulation effects. You can create modulation sweeps which
move in time with music, or wildly moving effects which have
a life of their own. The Dynamic Patching matrix maps data from
any of 143 possible sources to any effect parameter. These
sources include 126 different MIDI controllers, and external
sources such as footswitches and footpedals."
Another new concept with the PCM-80 is it's dynamic
spatialization processors. "Two independant spatial processors
allow you to place effects virtually anywhere between your
loudspeakers-or even beyond them. Most significantly, they allow
you to locate the effects dynamically, thus creating spaces that
changes along with the music. For example, when playing
sustained chords through 'Steered Rear,' thew PCM-80 *automatically*
steers the reverb *around* you (into full rear surround sound)
when the input audio decays past the threshold."

Now after reading through all of this (and much more on
the brochures), I'm questioning exactly what is applicable to
the guitar. Sure there are effects that will probably send
you off into left field all over this thing, but what are
players such as John Petrucci and Al DiMeola using these things
for? I'm in agreement about the quality of the reverbs Lexicon
has to offer: VERY nice stuff here, so I can certainly see
a large drawing off these parameters. But (here it goes) a
$2499 list price? Whew! Would you snag one for a live rig?
    How about pure (home)studio usage?

The PCM-80 is a fine studio box; I've been using one for
3 months and really like it as a guitar and vocal reverb.
Don't know if I would be too eager to throw it in the rack
for a road-trip though... Lexicon stuff has has never
grabbed me by the lapel and screamed "road worthy!!!" :-) :-)

    I agree with -.1

I would *not* slap a $2K processor in an guitar rack... Kev,
I still say that if you're whipped on Lexi stuff, 1/3 the price
of the PCM70/80 would get you an LXP-15, which will do all the
standard guitar noizes - WITH the Legendary Lexicon sound...

I'm whipped on the Lexicon sound myself - I've got a pair of LXP's
in my studio - My main reverb and my main delay line... I'm looking
seriously at a LXP-15 for my 'rig-from-hell' also... (As we've
    discussed...)
