Hi,
I have a Fender Champ 12. The other day I was playing away at max
volume (I don't usually but the volume had sort of 'crept' up). All of
a sudden the sound just died gradually away to a (nicely) distorted 100
mwatts or so. This situation persisted for 2/3 minutes whilst I waggled
nobs, unplugged jacks etc etc. Then, the sound gradually came back and
the amp performed fine afterwards. I have had this amp for 2.5 years
with no problems whatsoever. However, I have rarely if ever played it
for any length of time at full volume. Guitar was on lead pickup and
treble boost was switched in on the amp. Ie, piercingly clean Strat sound.
Now, could this have been some overload protection coming in or does it
sound like an intermittent fault has developed (such as a valve?).

I had an amp that did that a couple of times. I'd be playing along and
all of a sudden the volume would go down and the tone would change it'd
come back after a couple of minutes. I replaced the preamp tubes and
the problem went away.

speaking of amp problems
I am about to start gigging with my twin. What sort of spare
valves shouldI carry with me ....remembering that an 6L6 costs about30
aussie dollars.

A 12ax7, a fuse, a 3prong to 2prong adapter (assuming your mains are
similar to US mains). If you start to lose a power tube, you'll just
hear an increase in distortion and a slight loss of power. My
suggestion is wait until you retube the Twin and then keep a couple of
the old 6L6's as spares.
Oh, it's a Twin, you say? Then you'll need some sort of crane
mechanism to actually move the thing... =8^)
