2412.0. "Johnny Winter" by USPMLO::DESROCHERS () Mon Dec 23 1991 14:45

Johnny Winter - now here's a guy I always thought would be
more popular in this file. I have a ton of his old stuff
and he's, by far, the biggest influence on my playing. I'll
never forget the day I heard "Be Careful with a Fool" from
his first Columbia album. Wow, what an affect on a 15 year
	old kid!!

So, just picked up his latest CD, "Let Me In" and good ol'
Johnny is still rippin' those rockin' Blues tunes!

In "Illustrated Man" he sings about his tatoos with words
like "got Mona Lisa on my keister"... it's a cooker.

"Life is Hard" is a slow blues that shows him in fabulous
vocal form as well as guitar wise. Passionate city.

I've only listened to it 4 times so I can't yet match the
titles but I'll just say that Johnny's obviously over his
addiction years and in fine form. This ain't laid back,
	my_mamma_dun_lef_me blues here.

Also, his band is much better than the old ones. The drummer
	in particular is very tasty.

So, if you're an old JW fan from way back like me and you
haven't picked up any Johnny in years, this one should bring
a smile to your face too!

	Ahh, those rockin' teen years...

	Lawdy Mama, Light my fuse!!

here here! A good effort by someone I thought was making table candles
in a rest home..

The first one I ever hoid was 'illustrated man' one day, headin home from
work.. Says to myself, "If I didn't know any better, I'd say fer sure
that was Johnny Winter" - well shut mah mouth, --- it was..

I hear he's put the ol Firebird asside (cept for slide) and gone the
Stienberg Route. (gawd, I don't know how anyone can get used to them
things..)

But yea, sounds great. It's a disc that was on my list afta the
latest SRV (unreleased) disc.
2412.2Who, me?USPMLO::DESROCHERSMon Dec 23 1991 16:4415

Yeah, the pics I've seen are with his Steinberger but there's
no pic or mention of what he plays in this one.

But it sure sounds like the Firebird - real hot tone and every
    	note jumps out!

Another one is called "Hey You" and one verse he yells "Hey you"
and "Yeah you" and then the next verse his band echo's him with
"Who Me?" and "Me?". Then he rips thru the solo.

My vote for best lyrics of the year!

Well Johnny just played up here in Barre, Vt. of all places.
He used the Steinberg (or whatever it is) on all but two songs,
which were slide tunes that he used the Firebird for.

He did a good show considering he must constanstly be on the
road playing several times a week. He is actaully quite a
	road warrier.

He's also put out several records in the last five or six years.
He had four on Alligator records since about 1985 and his latest
is on Point Blank. Still cranking.... He's gotta be close to if
not in his fifties.. He looks a little on the worn side.

He did several songs from Let Me In, but he also did lots of stuff
that I don't think he has officially released. He probably knows
thousands of blues tunes. He even did his christmas song "Come
	Home for Christmas".

I came away with the same idea,,, sounded like the Reverse F.B.
to me as well, till I talked to another six string totin, J.W.

was the steinberger, cept for the slide...

2412.8Johnny Winter better than everMRCSSE::WAIBLEMon Dec 30 1991 16:5527
Saw Johnny about 6 months ago at Great Woods, blew me away. Had a
chance to see hiom at the paradise and I got to lean on th stage
monitor with his mike stand about a foot ahead of me. I was in total
awe. I was so close the guy behind me actually was overcome and just
had to reach out and touch his boot which he could do easily, I mean i
was close. I went to see him 4 days later in the same type of venue and
got got just as close in the PERL Club in North hampton. I have always
been a Johnny Winter fan but this really sinched it. I have been
playing his stuff by the hour and playing along as best I can. His
style is SOOOoooo kool!!! I spent one whole poerformance studying his
right hand and the other performance checking out his left....either
could be subjects for separate guitar books!!.

the guitar was a white starnge shaped thing that had the letters
ERLEWINE in gold across it as if it was the brand. Is that really a
stienberger? He did pull out the firebird for the slide work. He's just
like a fine wine....he keeps getting better with age. I agree he
deserves much more recognition in the notes file and in general.

A good tape which I have duped is Johnny Winter Live. It's from a
1984? concert in Toronto Canada. It's the same configuration as he is
currently using for the tour but with different players that is, power
trio. He is a must see for anybody that is into guitar and go out andd
    get the CD.

Johnny's headless guitar was originally an IMC Lazer (cheapo Japanese
thing) which he had extensively reworked by luthier Dan Erlewine. Since
then, I think Erlewine has been making them on a special order basis.

The guitar he had in Barre, Vt earlier this month was a different one than
the one he has on several of his album covers. On Winter of '88 he has the
Lazer... the one he is playing now has a different shape to it.

Hey, did this happen to anyone else? A couple of weeks
ago, I heard Carson say something like "our guests next
week include Johnny Winters, etc. etc.". I was psyched.
Yeah, Carson's been getting some decent musical acts on
lately to pull in that young crowd; this was a big step
    in the right direction.

That next week, I tuned in every night and listened to the

Johnny's got another album out - can't remember the name right now,
'cause it's out in the car, but he's got some righteous tone and he's
doing the usual tasty blues riffs in the most casual manner.
Definitely an album for blues players.

He's got the Lazer on the front cover, and a big hollow body on the
back cover. I've just got to believe that the tone I'm liking so much
had to come from that hollow body - real mellow, and no need for a
resonance control, if you know what I mean...

A little Johnny Winter update. My daughter, who is nineteen and
doesn't know a thing about guitars or Johnny Winter, saw him at
Stratton Mtn. in Vermont over the weekend of the 4th. She was totally
blown away, she must have bent my ear for a full half-hour last night.
She said he played mostly slide on a Gibson (she got real
close to the stage cause she knew I'd ask, I bet it was that Firebird
    he generally uses).

She said the crowd really ate up his performance, people were going
nuts. It's great to see that Johnny is still touring and giving good
performances. Anyone seen him on this current tour? (I was very envious
when my daughter told me she was headed up to Stratton to see him).
By the way, the remnants of the Band and Leon Russell also played at
this gig, she said the Band was so-so and Leon was real good, but
that Mr. Winter stole the show.

Not a Johnny note, but Edgar....

I happened to cruise past VH-1's "Midnight Special" show last night,
Wolfman Jack and all. One of the featured sessions was the Edgar
Winter Group doing "Frankenstein." You know, those guys were terrific!
I have no idea who the guitar player was, he had a Gibson SG and did a
great job with the tune! Edgar had this ARP 2600 on stage and was
tweaking the switches to get the bizzare sounds in the middle of the
tune. Looked to be Dan Hartman on bass.

It was very live and very well played....those guys were GOOD
    musicians!

I did see them live with Derringer doing that tune. Edgar did the
keys, sax, and drum solos in the tune. I always found that Dan
Hartman wrote the best tunes to me.

Also, I'm surprised both Edgar and Johnny are still alive.

Ronnie Montrose was the guitar slinger with Edgar Winter on Midnite
Special. Saw him live with edgar a few times at the Orpheum, & his stage
act is/was very similar to Derringer's. Montrose went on to form his own
band "Montrose" with singer Sammy Hager " remember him? Hager went on

    behavior on stage....
Too many years ago to remember all the details, but I have "ALL" of
