1857.0. "New Kendricks Amp" by VAXWRK::SAKELARIS () Thu Jun 07 1990 18:39

Yesterday I saw something that some of you might find interesting. I
was in Harvey's Music store in Milford NH (new location btw) and saw
what I first believed to be a PV Classic - You know the Blond tweed
they had out during the middle and late 70's. Then I noticed the name
    "Kendricks". So I'm looking it over - 2 6l6's with 4 10's - and I see
the owners brochure. Damn if it wasn't hand typed, with typing
corrections made with white-out and a ball point pen.

The person who wrote the brochure sure says the right things about the
amp, if you were into this kind of stuff anyway. They say its an exact
duplicate of the Western Electric patent in '46 that was later sold to
Leo Fender ( I think )in '49. It also has another circuit so that you
can have an fx loop that you can select. They say it's meant to be
pushed and pushed hard " to get that vintage blues sound". Its rated at
    40 watts RMS.

After trying it, Harvey asked what I thought of it. I told him it was
pretty good, except that it doesn't have reverb for my taste. Then he
said "yeah the price is pretty good too - $1700 !" Wow! It turns out
this is serial number 001, thus the hand typed brochure. Nice amp, no
doubt about it. But whereas collecting is something that's not in my
range of interest ( I can't stand this predjudice about Strats made in
Japan), this amp is nothing I would pay 1700 for.

Anybody ever heard of or seen 'em?

I just saw an ad for this amp in a guitar mag; it was the first I'd
ever heard of it. Looks like yet another 4x10 Tweed Bassman copy
a la THD (which has it's own note in here somewhere); is there really
that much market for these things? This one must be better than the
    THD; after all, it's $100 more :-)

Fender's doing their own re-issue of this amp, which is slightly more
reasonable (in the $1000 range); I've heard it's a pretty nice copy.

I would lean towards the Fender version myslef. THD and Kendricks
will most likely be here today-gone tomorow.

Of course, even the Fender version is not a great value ($1000
for a 45 watt combo?). It's more of a nostalgia trip. Look at
the Fender re-issued guitars and basses. The price on these is
as high as a deluxe Strat+, despite the outdated clunky hardware.

    Just my humble opinion !!

Hey Fred, it sure sounds to me like you played a bum amp or something.
Maybe a tube was on it's way out, who knows? I'm not a proponent of
Kendricks or anything, but I just find it hard to believe a *working*
amp gave you chainsaw at 4; Bassmen don't do that, and I'd expect the
Kendricks to be close enough not to either.

1857.6I'll stick to my PV-MX/Boogie combination thank youEARRTH::ABATELLIWho knew?Fri Aug 28 1992 17:407
I dunno Rick, I plugged it in and I wasn't impressed at all. I was
actually very disappointed. So much so that there was a guy
playing a Peavey 112 that had a better tone! I'm not knocking PV,
but I just expect ALOT more from a $1200. amp.
