1438.0. "OLD GOLDS ARE GOOD" by FULMER::MACTAVISH () Wed Aug 23 1989 16:49

Hi......... interesting arguement I have an oldish Les Paul Custom
circa 1968 and have recently bought an '80s Strat. The Strat is
fine but it doesnt come close to the older LP. It just feels great.

What I would really like to get my hands on is a gold top Les Paul,
in the UK they are like hens teeth and as such carry a high value,
however I wouldnt buy unless it felt good.

Another thing there is without doubt an inverted snobbery amongst
some of our number who value "REAL" Fenders and Les Pauls and even
I when looking for my Strat confined my efforts to the genuine article
Made in the US of A article, so even I could plead guilty here.

Since then I have had a blast on a Levinson Blade ( a strat and
a bit more besides ) Wow! 3 times the price and twice the axe.

On the collectors side a blonde Levin in good nick is not to be
sneezed at and well set up would blow the socks of many a Martin
or a Louden. Acoustic fans take note.

If anyone has two much money then do your collecting in the UK where
our dealers really know how to charge. You chaps dont know your
    living.

    Regards Neil

	re: .3

	. . . just kidding around . . . I got a kick out of certain
figures of speech which are obviously common in the U.K.
Americanized English is really quite different!

I also used to own a '68 Les Paul Custom - - back then they
only made them in black and they were the 'fretless wonder'
versions. They were very nice, though many guitarists did
not like the low frets. I'm surprised that gold tops are
scarce in the UK as they are quite common here in the states.
I currently own two of them. One has humbuckers and the
other has P-90 single coils. The two types produce *very*
different sounds, though the P-90's are still a very "fat"
single coil - nothing like the Fenders. You can also find
used gold tops circa early 70's with the mini-humbuckers.
These are brighter sounding than the standard PAF humbuckers.

But after all is said, you're right - it's got to feel right.
There have been ups and downs in Gibson's production quality.
Some are destined to become vintage classics, others are
destined to grow dusty hanging on pawn shop walls.
