1331.0. "what's a biflex truss rod?" by 6171::CLARK (roots, wings, and oat bran) Mon Jun 05 1989 12:49

okay, so what's a 'biflex' truss rod and what's the advantage over
    a 'regular' truss rod?

    inquiring minds want to know!

Traditional truss rods only allow adjustment in one direction.
"Biflex" is a Fender trademark for a truss rod that can be adjusted
in two directions. I guess the big problem was with older guitars
that used heavier strings that than are common today not allowing
sufficient adjustment for light gauge strings. Some repair minded
person might want to correct me on this!!!

Looking at a Strat Plus, are we?

well, actually we already bought an american standard, which (I
think) also comes with a biflex truss rod. Just curious as to to
what I can do to the neck curvature.

If you're interested in guitar building, Stewart McDonalds offers
    double adjusting truss rods.

As Brian already mentioned, the advantage is that you have the option
of counteracting a back bow on the neck. If you don't have this type
bows back, you have to go through fun stuff like pulling the frets out,
planing the fretboard flat again and refretting.

I heard that some of the other vendors were starting to use this type
trussrod too, but right now, I don't recall which ones.
