1186.0. "I need to know this gear!" by PIKES::MAEZ (It's cheap but it ain't free...) Mon Mar 06 1989 19:40

I saw Kenny G. in Colorado Springs a week ago. Anyway, besides being a
great 2.5 hour show, he had a new white bass player that was totally
awesome. His name was Vale Johnson from Sweden I believe, and man o man
this dude was totally hot. He did some stuff that you would've only
expected from a Stanley Clarke or Marcus Miller or so. I was totally
impressed.

My question is this, He was using a slim headless bass with some pointed
cutaways that was a beautiful dark Candy Apple Red/Burgandy fretted,
with brite round wounds. For amplification he used a stack of components.
I had binocs but couldn't tell any brand names due to the lack of a tuning
head to write on and to dark a stage to read the stack. I just know he got
a fantastic sound from his gear and I'd like to know what he uses.

Has anyone else seen this tour and if so do you know what brands he was
using? I would love to get some literature on the stuff from any
pictures/mailorder catalogs etc. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

The bass could be a Status, made in the UK. Lots of European players
seem to use them judging from MTV. It is headless, has a Steinberger
like bridge (gold plated on the ones I've seen). Washburn has begun
making, under a liscense, a Japanese version.

Last I heard Ststus was imported by the Trace Elliot amp folks,
who are now handled by Kaman (Ovation).
