1126.0. "John McFee" by TRUCKS::JANSEN_J () Sat Feb 04 1989 10:06

I bought an album last week by a group called "Southern Pacific"
primarily because the guitarist on the album is John Mcfee, the former
Doobie Bros guitarist, who has always been one of my faves.

Anyone know what he has been doing in recent years?

    Regards

I believe Stu Cook (from CCR) is also a member of Southern Pacific.

Has this band been around long? I seem to remember that one
of the guitarists from this band(?) Played on Elvis Costello's
    debut record.

John also used to play with a band called Clover. Huey Lewis was
the harmonica player for the band but I don't believe he was the
    lead vocalist at that time.

Stu Cook is certainly a member as is former Doobie Brother Keith
    Knudsen.
It was John Mcfee who played with Elvis Costello for a while when
Elvis was "going country" and recorded an album in Nashville.

    Re: John and Elvis

Clover was the (uncredited) band on Costello's "My Aim Is True". McFee
was also on the B-side "Radio Sweetheart" and of course, the "Almost
    Blue" album as noted earlier.

Clover had two Mercury albums, at least one produced by Nick Lowe
(thus the Elvis connection, they happened to be in the studio at
the time Lowe was recording Elvis) but Huey didn't play as no harp
    was needed.

While in the UK, McFee also contributed some steel to the second
Mallard album (ex-Beefheart sidemen) which was produced by Mutt Lange,
who had colaborated with Lowe on the first couple Graham Parker
    platters.

Southern Pacific is a hot band on the country charts, but they are
more of an Eagles-ish country rock outfit than hardcore C&W.

I believe the Doobie Bros actually reformed a year or two ago for
some concerts..anyone know what the line up was?
