1080.0. "LIXX/TRIXX/RUNZ" by TRUCKS::LITTEN () Tue Jan 17 1989 14:59

To All,

Here goes on a few licks/runs that I have picked up over the years.

I am going to throw them in as they occur to me. There is nothing here that
will stretch anybody, but some may be a catalyst to re-thinking your own lick
list. I will label the licks to ease any future reference.
In case there may be some newer players who are unfamiliar ( or I'm using the
wrong ones!) ......First a guide to my abbreviations...

H.O. hammer on
P.O. pull off
B.U. bend up ( that is, to raise the string pitch, you may bend the string
upWARDS or downWARDS to achieve this ).
L.D. return the string to it's original (unbent pitch)

( ) the note or fret to which a string is bent BUT not picked upon reaching
      the desired pitch.
sl slide between the indicated notes.

Here goes...

A. Peter Green style lick. The trick on this one is to use the 2nd finger
to hold the (14) bent note up while fingering the 10 and 12 on top E.
In the key of A.

C. Key A. If, like me, you "see" the key of A around the 5th position F shape,
then this lick will open up a few of the notes when starting from open A
string and working around the Fsharp "shape". Fairly basic stuff this !

Tip. at * use 1st finger to barre the 2nd fret B and A string, keep on for
the 5 3 2 sequence. The final note A,( D string,7 fret) has got you back
in the A " box" , if thats where you want to be !!

D. just for a change, a blues run in G up at the 15 fret position. I play this
when I feel like getting out of my depth and convert to Chuck Berry when
I fumble it half way through !

be used as a link. Good for picking technique too. In the Key of A....

F. Ho Hum time....works in any key, a country-ish lick good for getting a
G to C move. hold the 2nd fret D shape, use the 1st finger to bend, the
little pinky to work the top string. The BU and LD refer to the G string
   only.

I usually do a 8 9 8 HO PO at the third note to "dress" the run
        up a bit.
H. While we are on chord runs, here is how I might dress up a Cmaj7, nice
if the song ends on this chord, again put a 10 9 10 9 straight picked
effect on the two notes. Hold the first four notes as a chord and play
    them as a sweep.

Here is the chord version. I tend to chuck it in solos, usually playing it in
reverse order, once on each shape, using thumb, 1st and 2nd fingers. Use a
barre position to finger the 7,7,7 (D) chord. Sounds good if you slide the
first ( 5, 6, 7) chord from one fret below. Try a HO PO between the 6 and 7
shape. I never said these licks were going to be hard !!

I was listening to "Paradise City" by Guns 'N Roses (killer track)
and the guitarist seems to to be playing some sort of
descending/ascending scale right at the begining of the track.

Out of curiousity, could some one tell me what it is and enter it

Ok, the scale Slush is playin at the beggining of Mr. Brownstone
is an E pentatonic minor scale but he flirts with a major and a
minor 3rd so the scale has a more mixolydianish sound to it.

I don't have me guitar in my hands at the moment, but I'm pretty
    sure its this:

    D-----O-------------2-----------4-2-O---------------------------
    A----2-2-O----------O-----------------2-------------------------

Thanx Buck, now I can sound like my favourite guitarist...sigh..;-)

I've change the title of this note, as it seems that we didn't have
a topic to exchange solos, riffs and licks, but here it is!!

So...., there are a couple of riffs that I wouldn't mind knowing,
but I'm too damn lazy to sit down and try and work them out (well,
actually thats not true, I've been trying to suss out the second
riff for a day or so, and am having very little luck).

    a) Sweet Child 'O Mine - by GnR's very own Slush
    b) Still of the Night - By Whitesnake (riff was played originally

Here's a little run based on the A Harmonic minor scale.
Actually, I've been having problems getting the harmonic minor
to sound like anything I can use, and would like to solicit
any useable riffs based on it, along with application notes.
(In keeping with the rules of this note, though, I thought
I should have SOMETHING to offer, though)

    re: -1

To me, harmonic minor is a tricky scale to sound correctly in a minor
context. I usually find that if I stick to the harmonic minor chord
scale, things are fine. If you were playing in A minor, the chords for
that scale would be the following:

    A min B dim C aug D min E maj F maj G# dim
    1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7

These are built on triads, of course.

C aug is a weird chord for rock, but if you think about it, its like
Ab in first inversion using `rock' fingerings (ie 2 & 3 note clusters).

OK, go all the way up then all the way back down. It sounds to me
like the run in the 1812 overture, try it and you will know what
    I mean !

Before I sign off, I would love to see a few examples of the
    following.......

Do you remember the time you visited the local music shop, probably
on a saturday morning, the usual 'muso" clan is there, and the guy
is trying out the latest hot rig....and you hear it....THAT RUN,
probably goes across all the strings and spans 8 frets or more.

You got it down some time ago, and probably use it when tuning up
at gigs, testing out guitars for feel, getting your chops in etc....
Well, just in case I don't get to hear you at the local store and
rush over asking how you did it, share it in this NOTE...please !!

    Thanks in advance,

    /Dave

I was fiddling with 12 bar blues amd I started fumbling around
with this run. I use it as a warm-up exersice too, but its quite
        a cool run.

The notes that are spaced ( eg ---O-O-4-4--- are played with a
'funky/bluesy' feel, whilst the other notes like ---1410-- (ie
NOT spaced) should be played much much faster, with a much
smoother feel. The fast bits need strict alternate picking, but
do what you want with the others.

        Here's another...

This is the fill that proceds the solo in Malmsteen's
"Rising force". Its quite a good little run, but to
execute it cleanly you should keep your hand arched,
using the tips of your fingers for the pull offs.

Makes a good guitar riff. You can finger this a lot of different
ways. Hope these numbers are right.

Swing rhythm. slash = slide into note. 3 indicates triplets.

Hey, Buck, are those fingers up there (3 1 2)?? If they are,
do you keep the 11 on b fretted all the time, rather than moving

    RE: -1

Yes, those are fingers, and the only finger that is stationary is
finger 1. Fingers 3 AND 1 move alterativly...it helps keep the notes
staccato..if you held finger #2 its would sustain after picking and
sound messy. Dave Clark uses That fingering I described...and he plays
licks like that really well...I don't feel comfortable personally with
that fingering, but then again I usually don't play licks like that. I
would use my first finger for the 8th fret and either an alternating
3rd or 4th finger for the 11th fret notes. Probably would be the 4th
finger becuase it is stronger on my hand then my 3rd finger is.

    Ok, now everyone play fast!

If you think about it, you might find that the third finger is quite
often the weakest. Try this exercise:

Place each of your fingers on consecutive frets (e.g. index
    on 4th, middle on 5th, ring on 6th, and little on 7th);

Decide which two fingers you want to work on first (let's say
    middle and ring fingers);

Now lift your middle finger off the fretboard (but leave all
    the others down);

The *instant* you drop your middle finger back to the fret,
pull your ring finger off the fretboard.

Repeat this with all combinations of fingers. Start out slow
and work on building speed. It's a good exercise when you're away
from your guitar too. I found that my third finger was my weakest
    too.

I'd use a standard crosspicking methodology;i.e., use alternate
directions across the strings. This requires some practice,
but in the long run will give great results in clean pickin'.

I'm really struggling with the following lick from Comfortably
Numb (am I leaving my self open here, or what?): When he enters
the solo he hits a quick stroke with three muted notes and one regular,
I've tried the following two ways:

    Way one Way two

    e 14 14
    b x(11) x(16)
    g x(11) x(16)
    d x(11) x(16)
    a
    e

Way one works (the sweep is muted until the f#) but the next
part of the lead requires that I get my but up to bend the f# and
I'm not fast enough to get there....... I can't even get the f#
to sound with way 2.... Is there a "way" that I'm missing???

Later in this solo he does a muted sweep that is even more
difficult (for me at least) than this one where he sweeps three
muted notes to a pull off, like this:

                   P
                  ---
    e 15 14
    b x(?) 16 14 etc. etc.
    g x(?)
    d x(?)
    a
    e

How the heck is he doing that.. I chose to learn this solo cos
it's really sweet (not like me) and slow (very much like me) but
this little sweep (he only does it 3 times) is driving me nuts!!!

obviously in C-maj with that drop to Em confusing things a little, but
not much... and all of a jeezly sudden this guitar player cuts loose

I suppose there's no accounting for taste, but I love this lick,
what I don't understand is why it sounds so different to me... On the
surface it looks like a postion in the Cm pentatonic scale and pretty
straight forward.... BUT... the chord that sounds like it matches
behind the lick is Ebmaj and the guitarist spends a lot of time on Eb
(16th fret on Mr. B string).. howcum?? Is this really Cm pentatonic or
is it Ebmaj (my guess is Ebmaj) how come it sounds so, heck I don't
know how to describe it, coooool, I guess, over Cmaj. Am I missing

Hmm....

Well Mike, when I was starting off I was really into playing some crunchy rock
rhythm stuff, so I learnt this bit from Ozzys Tribute album. Its the intro to
"Steal away the night" and has everything you'd ever want from a b*lls to the
wall rock riff. I used to (and still do) love playing this.

I've been liking this one in a major key....

Usually I'd do the slide like this say in Gmaj:

    e
    b 13/ 15
    g 14/ 16
    d
    a
    e

But lately I've been bending them instead, kind of sounds like a
    car horn:

           B
    e ___
    b 13 15
    g 14 16
    d
    a

I do the same thing with minor pentatonic scales and following with
Chuck Berry's minor third to third hammer on.

I already have a graphic. I guess I should ask the question:
Does anybody in this file use deliberate, controlled feedback?
I'm sure there are some who do. Is it the type of thing where
everybody's setup is gonna be different and you just have to
    	experiment?

What I'm trying to get at (specifically) is this:

In the song "Metropolis" by The Church, there's a "solo" of
sorts where the guitar hits this open-sounding E chord and
then a couple of seconds later this feedback starts up that
sounds like an A played on the G string second fret (kind of
a suspended 4th type of effect). I want to play this, but
haven't had much luck so far. Maybe the single coils on the
Tele just can't hack it? I've tried cranking the Twin, but
I don't want the excessive volume. I've tried dorking with
the gain and distortion levels on the Rat, but haven't had
much success that way either. What's a mother to do?

I think it's the OS-2 or something (that has to be the wrong pedal)

starts off the feedback from what ever chord/note you are playing...

	Then:
	Play your E chord

	and:
slide the Ab from the E chord up to an A (this is on the G string)
while *gently* pulling off the A string and leave the A string open.
If there's enough air moving in the room you'll get yer feedback.
A little bit of fingergrease on that upper A will probably help.

    Two thoughts:

    1) If you're gonna do it with EQ, you'd be much better off with
       a parametric than a graphic

    2) You might try doing this with an artificial harmonic of some
sort (you might have to bend it because there's no strong
harmonic for A in the E major chord).

    Hi,
I play guitar since 4 years with a Stratocaster US, and I'm a fan of
    Hendrix.
If someone know the intros, riffs or just the chords (in tab) of Red house,
Purple haze or Manic depression, please, send me them because I have my
own versions but they're not exact (I heard and I play)
    Sorry for my bad english...
