458.0. "Whammy installation help?" by VIDEO::BUSENBARK () Fri Jan 08 1988 15:19

Has anybody or does anybody know how to put a whammy on a
guitar? Specifically I have a precut body which has never been used
or had a bridge installed, but is routed out for all the neccesary
items. I'm putting a Kahler on it which is set up on posts. My concern
is intonation and how and where to measure for it?

Do you collect Guitar Player magazine. If so, I would suggest you
look through back issues at the "how-to" section to see if this
has been covered. If not, I have quite a stack of back issues at
home, and could look through them for you if you have no access
to them. One of the writer (I think his name is John Caruthers)
does how-to articles every month on guitar repair and alteration.

One quick source of information that I could also suggest is to
call Rich McDuff at McDuff's music in Shrewsbury. He builds custom
instruments, and is the type of person that doesn't mind giving
    out general information.

The folks at Fitchburg Music are also very knowledgeable about "how
to" stuff. They build a lot of custom axes, carry all the parts,
etc. Specifically, Alan or Dave [the owner] seem to know the most.
I know both of them and they're good guys and would probably be
able to give you some help. The phone number is (617)-342-8711.
They're open 'til 8:00 Mon.-Fri. and are open Sat.

Stewart McDonalds sells videos on guitar repair, they haveone for
$15.95 that covers both Kahler and Floyd Rose installation, from
your description of the bar you have the floyd rose installation
would be about the same...didn't Kahler give you instructions? Another
though would be to call Kahler (IN Connecticuit someplace) they'll
give you plenty of help, I spoke with their design engineer once
about mine, he called me in response to a letter I sent about some
shortcomings of the original kahler whammy...very helpful bunch..

dave who installed a standard Kahler once..

I bought a used Kahler so no instructions were available, but
I was able to figure out from various guitar books how to install
    it.

I'd suggest Steve Morrill who is the guitar luthier for E.U. Wurlitzers
in Boston, he works at the Worcester store on mondays & tuesdays.
He is by far the best around...you'd be alot better of just going
to see him instead of considering having McDuff do a hack job...I've
seen some of McDuffs work and...well let's just say...I wasn't
    impressed!

The number at Wurlitzers in Worc is 754-5271

    they're about $49.95 now!

Unfortunatly Stewwy-Mac's has had major inflation the last year or so, so much
so that I look elsewhere as often as not, but nobody beats their tuner, neck or
body prices yet...but the videos ackk!
