1975.0. "Amiga 1000 and the Hard Disk" by CIMAMT::CROMACK () Thu Dec 08 1988 17:16

I am looking into putting a hard drive on my Amiga 1000.
I would be interested in what other 1000 owners have for
hard disk hardware and what their experiences have been like.

1975.1Here's what my 1000's got...VTHRAX::KIPThu Dec 08 1988 18:5326
I used the C Ltd. A-1000 SCSI host/controller unit with an Adaptec
ACB-4000 SCSI controller; I am currently running ST-506-type drives
with this hardware for total of about 40MB. I found the initial
setup of this system to have a rather steep learning curve; luckily,
everyone here gave so much help that I was able to get the system
up and running within a day (you know who you are --- thanks guys!!!)

Overall, I've found this system to be very reliable; I haven't seen
a disk error requester yet (knock on Formica). There have been
a few instances where some software has crashed the machine in the
middle of a write to one of the hard disks, causing me to break
out in a cold sweat. Luckily, however, on every one of those occasions
the disk validator has apparently been able to repair the damage
so no effects (other than just a bit slower boot up time) were noticed.

I haven't measured the performance of this system; I'm sure it can
probably be improved with a little tweaking, but the performance
is so much better than floppies I'm quite satisfied as is.

Cost of the C-Ltd was a little under $200.00
    The Adaptec was $89.
The hard drives were used (one came from last DECUS at $50.00)

Glad to answer any more specific q's by email.

    Cheers!

At this (East) side of the BIG POND computers and s/w are
traditionally much more expensive than on your side. That
    - by the way - is even true for DEC products!
For the Amiga things are changing: with the market booming
in Germany some things are even cheaper over here. You can buy
the US version of WordPerfect for $160 for example.

So I recently bit the bullet and bought an AMIGO 20MB HD for
$550 (that includes the usual 20% tax in Holland).
The drive is in a flat box, that sits on the A1000 and under the
monitor. It can hold a second drive. I did not open the box, so
I do not know what interface is used and what type of drive
is hidden there. The box has a cable which plugs with a pass-
through plug onto the system bus.

Working with the HD is pure delight compared to the previous
two FD drive situation. I will NOT transfer the games on the
100-odd 3-1/2" Floppies to the HD.

If you can spare the money..........

About a year ago I bought a 20MB Supra from someone in the notes
file that was selling their system for an upgrade. Many people
have knocked the drive but as far as my wife and I are concerned
it has been a great addition to the system. The only caution that
I would advise is that what ever you decide you are locked into
that decision as far as expanding your system. You can't take that
drive and put it onto a 2000 system without being very creative
and taking the current drive apart and doing some magic. I would
say if you never plan on going to another system then the HD makes
    life some much more enjoyable.
