3428.0. "End of the Cold War" by WJG::GUINEAU () Sat Feb 03 1990 21:24

I was in the software shop Friday. It was quiet, Moe looked lonely...

He was real nice and kinda followed me a bit helping out (showing me stuff,
asking how I was etc).

I walked over to his A2500 and noticed an icon on the (wicked nice 16 inch
flickerfixered) monitor:

		"Workbench 1.4"

My eyes popped! A few clicks later I was not impressed.

"Hey Moe, is this really 1.4?" Thinking he was playing a cruel joke.
"Ya! Let me start it up for you!" (I'm thinking, "is this moe?")

He got to a cli and ran a program called KickIt which loaded the 1.4 ROM
(KickStart) off floppy... The machine reset... He gave me a quick demo...
I poked around a bit...

Well, let me just say, with 1.4 Amiga won't just blow your socks off. It's
gonna leave you stark naked!

1.4 (and this was an alpha version) is GREAT! Artists at CBM? There must be
a whole bunch of them! I won't spoil any more.

He seemed to think it would be out soon (sooner than you think :-)...
Save your cash friends!

I couldn't decide between Turbo Silver and Animate 3D. Moe surprised me again
"I sell that for $102.00. I'll give it to you for $85.00" - His wife stopped
in her tracks! "Sounds good" I said, and proceeded to get cash out of my
pocket. I handed him $90.00. Well, he didn't have any $5.00 bills. I grabbed
back a ten and said "So you can sell it to me for $80.00, OK?".
"All right" he said (in that unmistakable tone) "But you owe me $5.00!" He was
actually smiling. "You got it, Moe" I said.

The whole time another customer was there. He was buying a BBS package that,
when called from an Amiga, let's you view IFF files! We got to talking.

He was the animator for the Fenway Park scoreboard and the cable channel NESN!
He claimed to have about 15 Amiga's which he used exclusivly.

Well, he was as impressed with 1.4 (and Moe!) as I was. We both decided it
was time for a MultiSync, 1.4 and a cold beer...

John

John, I thought I was imagining things, but Moe may be mellowing out in
his old age. I was in there last Saturday (again, the store was empty
    - is this a problem with Moe or are Amiga sales that lousy?) and was
negotiating a price on a brand new A2620 board. He actually gave in in
a few seconds and made me a terrific offer that I couldn't refuse.

He had a few A2630 boards, but they were already sold. I tried on of
them in the demo 2000, but it really didn't seem any faster than the
A2620, at least in general windowing activity. We must be
bottlenecking up in the 16 bit graphics or something. Anyway, I
couldn't justify the added expense for a speedup that I couldn't see.

By the way, I wonder how Moe got his Alpha or Beta 1.4? SOme developer
may be putting his status at risk by giving away copies. I also wonder
if Moe is putting himself at risk?

I wondered the same thing and was hesitant to put in this note - especially
with the recent "save this notesfile" note.

He said he's a beta site to help report problems. I tested him by offering
to copy it while he wasn't looking :-) He stopped smiling and said
very strongly "NO WAY!" It seemed ligit.

I wouldn't have copied it anyway (really!) I was even trying not to look at
it so as not to spoil the surprise... But it looked great..

3428.3too good to be true?LEDS::ACCIARDITue Feb 06 1990 01:3613

I found out that Moe IS a registered developer, so his 1.4 is
reasonably legit. I had to twist his arm to even get a peek.

I won't waste time commenting on the new features, since it looked like
a very early Alpha version, but it looks almost too good to be true.
There has never been as slick and feature-laden a desktop on any PC or
    workstation that I'm familiar with.

If Commodore can get this out reasonably soon, the Amiga may yet make a
small spot on the map. I'll be holding my breath... and my tongue.

    I couldn't recall seeing this mentioned -

According to latest greatest rumor information, does know if 1.4
"requires" a kickstart ROM replacement or will it be merely a floppy
    update.

I'm sure it will require a new ROM - maybe even the new chips (I doubt that).

To get Moe's 1.4 working, he had to "KickIt" (load the KickStart ROM) into
RAM memory.

3428.6New Kickstart ROM's for 1.4 BUZZER::GERBERFor more info, call: 800/555-1212Tue Feb 06 1990 17:1711
Workbench 1.4 will require Kickstart 1.4 in ROM (except in the 1000
of course). The new chip set should only be required if you want the new
features that they supply.

AmigaDOS 1.4 may work with a 1.3 or 1.2 ROM, however you will wind
up with the older workbench. (Workbench is in ROM in 1.3/1.2). Also,
1.4 ROMs may give you FFS for floppies. (Thiswas the rumor at the time 1.3
was released.)

I have not yet seen any release of 1.4 working. Some of this is from
magazines, and some is from COMP.SYS.AMIGA

So, how you like it John? ;-)

If you folks had signed the same rigid non-disclosure agreement
as me, you'd know why I'm so tight-lipped.
As far as the ROM question is concerned, I believe I'm perhaps allowed
to eventually maybe tell you that WB1.4 will require Kickstart 1.4.
Since DOS is in Kickstart I don't grasp the concept of .6
