2733.0. "Tetris for the Amiga" by HYSTER::DEARBORN (Trouvez Mieux) Thu Jul 13 1989 17:35

Tetris from Spectrum HoloByte is a big disappointment. It is based
on the very popular arcade game from Atari, but is a very pale
    implementation. Problems include:

Lousy graphics. More time seems to have been spent on creating
picture backgrounds than on the game board itself. The game looks
    like an Atari ST port.

No Joystick option. All control is from the keyboard. The mouse
    is only used for menus.

Copy Protected with a keydisk scheme.

Won't run from workbench. Doesn't multitask well, if at all.

Manual is for the Mac, with a one page correction sheet for the
    Amiga.

Warranty card lists every system but the Amiga, which is listed
    as Other.

Gameplay is interupted by background picture changes indicating
    move to next level.

Sound effects are intermitent. Music can be turned off, but will
still play if sound effects are on.

No demo mode on the Amiga (there is one on the Apple //)

No autorepeat on the keys. This makes it harder to play than the
    arcade version.

Tetris, is a great game. It's too bad that Spectrum HoloByte didn't
spend the time to make it as good as it could be. I bought it hoping
that I could practice for the arcade version. The arcade uses a
    joystick. This version does not.

You can back TETRIS up with NIB. There's a parameter for it.

Tetris certianly could have been better for the Amiga but my family
still loves it. Very addictive game. Funny, I had never heard of it
until my daughter told me she plays all the time on a PC at school.
When we got it for the Amiga she remarked at how much better the Amiga
version was. We've never seen it on the MAC.

Wait until you see it in the arcade. The difference is like
night and day.

You should know that some sw company has claimed a law suit of some sort on
tetris clones...
2733.8Spectrum Holobyte vs. the rest of usFENRYS::mwmMike (Real Amigas Have Keyboard Garages) MeyerFri Jul 13 1990 20:4722
Spectrum Holobyte claims the rights to distrubte Tetris and variations in
the US. Their contract almost certainly requires them to defend those rights.

As such, they claim that all the PD Tetris's distributed by Fred Fish violate
their rights. They did not say exactly _what_ right was being violated -
copyright or patent. Fred, not being in a position to fight this claim,
just pulled those things from distribution.

It's not clear whether or not SH can get a judge to agree that those
games violate their rights. Of course, given what judges have done
recently, it's not clear they can't.

In any case, there's no legal precedent either way, and no way to become
that precedent if SH doesn't find out about it. In any case, if you've got
a copy, it probably 1) runs better than the SH stuff, with 2) more options.
And it's pretty clear that you aren't going to have legal problems, unless
you try and distribute them.

Now for a comment: Obsessomatic seems to be the only one of the tetris variants
(licensed or not) that runs well on an accellerated 2.0 machine.

This is the story of my Amiga-life...Find a file I want, copy it to my
directory, KERMIT, then ZOO on the Amiga and bingo! Another corrupt file.
This time its WJG::AMIGA::TETRIX11.ZOO...ANAL/RMS shows 2 errors...anyone
else have a copy somewhere? I'm copying a to single drive 500 so copying a
while FF disk is WAY-OUT...

    Re: .9

The file isn't corrupt per se, but the format is incorrect for Kermit.
I've got the same file on CRISTA::AMIGA: and even though RMS complains,
it downloads fine. The file is in Stream Line-Feed format, so you must
convert it to fixed-length records for Kermit to download it properly.
Use CVTARC (or similar) to convert it, or use XMODEM to download it in
its current form. Better yet, use ZMODEM and forget all about the
different file formats; it doesn't care!

Yeah! I've finally down-line-loaded something...I managed to find CVTARC
last night (on my "own") thanks.
