3609.0. "Need stripped down Workbench" by APACHE::MYERS () Thu Mar 22 1990 18:58

Can someone tell what is and is not essential on the Amiga Workbench
disk. I would like to pare down my disc so that I can install some
new function in the c: directory. Right now the disc is full but I
haven't done much other than install a printer driver.

3609.1Prune unused stuff...BOLTON::PLOUFFIt came from the... dessert!Thu Mar 22 1990 19:0722
This _must_ be covered somewhere else in the notesfile, though I'm not sure
where.

The short answer is to look in an early issue of _Amigaworld._

A slightly longer answer is to toss out things you don't use:

      Directory	Items
	devs:	Printer drivers
fonts:	any fonts other than Topaz
keymaps: anything other than USA0, USA1
(or whatever doesn't correspond to your nationality)
	c:	obscure commands

The idea is to look at what you use and toss the stuff you never use. For
instance, I tossed speech-handler, shell-segment, some "utilities" like clock,
and some of the startup files in S:, all in addition to pruning the above
directories.

Perhaps another noter can provide a more precise answer.

Re: .1

Actually, if you don't use any fancy fonts, you can delete the entire
fonts directory and its contents. The topaz fonts for 60 and 80
character displays are on ROM. The only disk based Topaz font is
Topaz 11, which is a font designed to look good on interlaced
screens.

You can also delete all the keymaps if the one you use is the standard.

Once you have set up all your printer/baud rate/screen position etc.
you can ditch the whole prefs drawer, or replace preferences with one
of the smaller PD equivalents such as qpref etc.

You can use a cruncher, such as PowerPacker on all executables bigger
than 5-10K, to save some room.

Install ARP 1.3, all ARP commands are smaller than their AmigaDOS
    equivalents.

I use only some of the techniques mentioned, I've deleted Utilities and
Prefs, installed ARP, crunched anything over 10K, got rid of all
unwanted keymaps and printer drivers. I've added MEmacs, VirusX, and a
couple of other small useful things and I have almost 500 blocks free
    on my boot disk.

What is your configuration? Crunching sounds ok but what happens
    if crunched files get infected?

You uncrunch them and remove the Virus where possible.

What do you do when (Sorry IF ) you are struck by a Virus.

I keep a special disk for Down loaded stuff , and test it before
    it goes any where else.
