1180.0. "BACKUP for DH0: to DFx?" by OLIVER::OSBORNE (Blade Walker) Wed Feb 17 1988 15:22

Just a quick, easy question (for those with hard disks):

Is there a good PD or commercial backup utility, or some simple
way to backup an entire DH0: or some part thereof to diskettes?

Some features that would be useful:
selective backup by path, assignment, or directory with subdirectory.
uses all DF drives, switching drives automatically and signaling
so user can swap diskettes on the "completed" drive.
labels the diskettes with ordinal number and date/time.
restores directory trees, files in correct directory.

Come to think of it, I haven't tried DISKCOPY DH0: to DF0:. What happens
when DF0: runs out of space?

Thanks-
John O.

Our own Steve Drew has written a fine HD backup utility called
'SDBackup' which is floating around on the e-net. It features file
compression, incremental backup/restore, and most of the other things
you mentioned. It will create a backup log file, but won't create
    labels for individual floppies.

Hardhat is a commercial utility that retails for $69, but I don't
    know too much about it.

There are another three or four PD backup utilities, but I've been
    sticking with SDBackup for now.

If you try to copy DH*: to DF*: from the Workbench, Intuition will
bitch (thankfully) that the device types are incompatible.

the MRBackup (Mark Rinfret??..not Mister) backup is ok in most
of the reguards mentioned..I haven't used either yet (I know...
I'm asking for it! ;-) fortuneatly you can backup using copy from
    DH0: to DH1: (I opted for 2 equal partitions...

The only advantage I see for MRBackup is the use of WB over CLI,
but for me...I think SDBACKUP is probably the way to go...

I have both MRbackup and SDbackup, and have bought HARD HAT and
LV-backup. MRbackup and SDbackup are both good programs, but I like
LV-backup because it lets me select directories and/or files to
    backup or restore.

    HARD HAT is the pits!!!!!
The version that I have takes about 1 hour to backup 1 floppys worth
of data. If you are interupted or stop you have to restart over
again. For a 20mb hard disk it takes about 20 hours to do a backup
if you are not interupted, then you get to start over.

SDBACKUP takes about 25 minutes per floppy .. ugh!
