4863.0. "AMIGA TO VIDEO HELP" by MASALA::APEDEN () Fri Jun 28 1991 23:57

Is it possible to use a standard video recorder to record graphics
and animations from a standard amiga without the use of a genlock
device.I dont want to mix the computer graphics with any live action,
just put on video tape exactly what is on my monitor.

    Cheers Peeds

ps Ive tried DIR/TITLE=VIDEO and DIR/TITLE=GENLOCK but haven't found
    the answer to my question.

Yes,

I've recorded some of the Aerotoon's onto video using the
A520 on my 500. The 520 outputs composite video (colour).

I have also used the CBM A520 video modulator. It plugs into the video
port on any Amiga and output color composite video or RF modulated
video. The unit cost about $30.

Yup, the A520 works fine on my A3000, also.

You should get some of the intro-to-Video books and look through those,
though. The rules about colors, etc are even more important than if
    you've got a genlock.

Yeah, my performance tonight at the Perforamnce Place in Somerville
uses a video tape of Amiga graphics. I used a Creative Microsystems
unit with composite out (also chroma and luma).
There is a behaviour with it that I bet is common to all of them.
It behaves as though it has an automatic gain control on each
color, but by monitoring the overall gain of all colors (or luma).
I had these dark blue screens , and they went green.
Well, it was as though it said, "this is too dark, let's turn up
the red and the green". Red and green make yellow, and yellow and
blue make green, so I got green until I turned up the blue to
very bright blue. Still pure blue though.
I think this might be required by video standards; something
	about average brightness.
Don't buy something for $25, they stink. I have one you can buy
for cheap to experiemnt with. The CMI one is about $60, or was.

I've tried recording taking the signal straight from my modulator into
my video, but the video doesn't seem to tune in to this. All I get is
interference as if the video isnt in sinc with the signal from the
modulator. As I am in the UK could this problem be due to the different
television system over here? Or has anybody in the UK managed to tape
    from their modulator.

A modulated output should not be connected to a video input.
It is modulated to be connected to an antenna. It should be connected
to an antenna, say a 75 ohm antenna, or a transformer from 75 to 300
if you have 300-ohm antenna terminals on the VCR.
An encoded output should be connected to a video input.
The encoded output is labelled composite.

4863.8Have you tuned?WELCLU::EDWARDSThu Jul 04 1991 08:4514

    Peeds,

Assuming you have your connections right i.e. Ami modulator output
to VCR aerial input have you tuned in your VCR input channel to the Ami
output frequency. I believe the Ami output is approximtely Ch. 36.

Ch. 36 is also typically used as the output channel of the VCR so
you may get 'bleed thro' if so you could try adjusting the output
channel of either the VCR or the Ami.

I got it to record by taking the signal from the video out to video in
on the VCR,rather than trying to tune the VCR to the output of the
modulated signal. Thanks everyone for their help.
