1481.0. "Digitizers" by WINNER::JBERNARD (John Bernard YWO/292-2591) Thu Jun 16 1988 17:56

    With all the new Digitizers out on the market as well as upgrades to
    existing ones, it seems about time to start a topic on digitizers.

    	- Product Reviews
        - Tips and Hints
        - Examples
        - etc.

    I just ordered the V3.0 DigiView upgrade, as well as DigiDroid. I recieved
    an update to the PerfectVision software that seems to do a better job
    than the original software.

    I am now looking for somethin that will take frames from a VCR or
    off the air and digitize them....

    without having to re-mortgage the house!!!

    I just saw an ad in amigaworld for a direct from composite
    digitizer for eitgher 300 or 400, 15 b&w frames a second or
    ca. 8 color frames/second.
    I can't afford it, but it seems interesting.

    DigiView will digitize a frame off a VCR. That's how I made the
    Harrier animation.

    Can you give me the details about DigiView 3.0.

    What's different about it?  I have 2.0.

    I second that motion.

    The only thing of substance that I have seen is "overscan mode"
    (and of course extra-halfbright, which makes no difference to me
    and my A1000).

1481.5DigiView 3.0 DetailsWINNER::JBERNARDJohn Bernard YWO/292-2591Tue Jun 21 1988 22:5231
    From what I have heard/read (mine hasn't come in YET) here is a
    summary of the changes from DigiView 2.0 to 3.0.....

    2 types of overscan resolution "Standard" and "Serious". "Standard
    overscan is compatable with most Amiga graphics programs, while
    serious overscan is for more professional applications." You figure
    it out....

    Extra Half-Brite...

    Line Art. "This mode automates the usually difficult process of
    capturing line art and logos in a single bitplane."

    "The documentation for Digi-View 3.0 has been revised to explain
    the new features in detail. A tutorial is now included to help
    the user learn about digitizing with an expanded section on tips
    and hints. The manual will nowhelp users get the best digitized
    pictures possible, and the extensive troubleshooting section helps
    identify where problems exist and how to fix them. All in all,
    Digi-View 3.0 and the manual give you new digitizing power for even
    better pictures than before."

1481.6To grab or to digitize?MQFSV1::DESROSIERSTout est possible Thu Jul 07 1988 13:1112
    What is the difference between a digitizer and a frame grabber?
    How do they work?

    I saw the "LIVE" demo and I was not impressed, sure it can take
    live video but with low picture quality, maybee I'm expecting too
    mutch. Thinking about it, LIVE is the only ad NOT showing a color
    picture of the output of thier device, all the others are showing
    a digitized (frame-grabbed?) picture. From all the litterature
    and demos that I have seen, the Digi-view seems to be a best buy,
    as long as live video is not required.

Re: .6

A digitizer (in this context) simply converts an image to digitally
encoded form. It is allowed to take two weeks to accomplish this
feat.

A frame grabber is a digitizer can accomplish its work in a small
enough amount of time to work in real time (about a thirtieth of
a second). (Grab an individual frame from the video input.)

I agree with you. The LIVE! pictures I've seen are not impressive.
1481.8DigiView FrameGrabber?WINNER::JBERNARDJohn Bernard YWO/292-2591Mon Jul 11 1988 01:596
    I read somewhere that an addition is in the works for DigiView to
    have a frame grabber option added. Seeing their delivery time for
    upgrades (4 weeks), I wouldn't hold my breath.

1481.9Progressive peripherals's FRAME GRABBERMQFSV2::DESROSIERSTout est possible Thu Oct 20 1988 13:498
    Has anyone seen "grabbed" pictures from the Progressive peripherals
    frame grabber? or does anyone own one?

    Just curious as I was planning to buy one soon. It looks (from
    the ads) to be the a good quality device.
