3021.0. "Hard Drivin' - Coming Soon to Amy" by LEDS::ACCIARDI () Sun Oct 15 1989 03:55

    I've uploaded a 'hands off' demo version of Hard Drivin' to
    NORSE""::AMIGA:[UPLOAD].

    Hard Drivin' is a remarkable arcade simulation of a sports car on a
    stunt track (see my note elsewhere in this conference). The arcade
    version uses some very complex electro-mechanical servo systems to
    produce steering and brake feedback while driving. It also has
    outstanding polygon rendering that literally makes you dizzy.

    The Amiga demo version is quite respectable compared to the arcade
    version. The polygon graphics are arguably the fastest yet on the
    Amiga, and seem about as fast as the Real Thing. The scrolling
    background scenery, while slighty less detailed than the arcade
    machine, is nonetheless quite good.

    The demo race course seems identicle to the arcade version, right down
    to the poor cow that I always turn into hamburger right in front of the
    barn. The title screen's text also is a direct port, minus the credits
    to Atari Games Corp.

    The file is called DRVNDMOB.WRP and needs to be unpacked with the Warp
    disk compressor, available on various nodes. Maybe some kind person
    could provide a Zoo format also.

    The file is in Stream_LF format for Xmodem downloading.

3021.1no luck hereSMAUG::SPODARYKBinary ThrottleSun Oct 15 1989 17:528
    Ed,

         That .wrp appears to be faulty. After downloading, Warp went
    to work, only to give me a "Error in Warp format in file xxx.wrp".

    Should it only be 221 blocks? Any other ideas?

3021.2No problems hereDUGGAN::MCCARTHYMike McCarthy MRO4-2/C17 297-4531Sun Oct 15 1989 20:424
    I had no problems downloading and unWarping . It looks interesting.
    I wish the demo had sound, however.

    Same for me,

    though I didn't get around to running it yet.

3021.4Got it.SMAUG::SPODARYKBinary ThrottleMon Oct 16 1989 02:526
    False alarm. I downloaded it again, and it was fine. I'll blame
    the phone company on the first one. :^)

    Nice demo. The rendering is quite quick, especially on a A2500.

Worked fine here. Shame it has no sound.

Looks like we've gone from flight simulator wars to racing wars :-) I guess
this means Falcon won the other race?

3021.6I couldn't get it to workNOBHIL::BODINE_CHMon Oct 16 1989 15:546
I did an ANAL/RMS on the file and it uncovered 2 errors. I couldn't get it
to work and I downloaded it twice with ZMODEM.

Whats the trick?

3021.7Overkill - try zoo'ing the wrp fileSMAUG::SPODARYKBinary ThrottleMon Oct 16 1989 16:489
    I don't know if there is a trick. The second time, I zoo'ed the wrp
    file, and then downloaded, unzoo'ed and warped it to floppy. The
    zoo step shouldn't be necessary, but it's been so long since I used warp
    that I thought it was safer. I still got a warp error, but everything
    works fine... If you're out of patience, send me mail/floppy.

    Good Luck.

    The file is in Stream_LF format on NORSE, if it makes any difference.
    I've found that Xmodem requires this file format on the VMS end.

I got an error at the END of the unwarping (i.e. after it did "track 79, head 1")

So I just dir a

	1> dir df0:

Saw lots of files, booted the floppy and it went fine.

Are you getting anything at all from the unwarping?

    Remember that you must eject the disk and reinsert it to allow AmigaDOS
    to validate it after it's been written. If you just try a warm boot
    from a freshly warped disk, it probably won't work.

re: .9

No, I got no files at all. It bombed out at track 49. I've used WARP before
without any problems. What version of WARP are you using?

Chris
3021.12WJG::GUINEAUTue Oct 17 1989 10:215
Either 1.1 or 2.0 :-)

Seriously, try 2.0. If the author was nice, it's backward compatible anyway.

I finally got it to work by downloading with XMODEM. This looks pretty good.
I have been waiting for the ultimate driving game. I hope this turns out to
be it.

3021.14Great but nothing to shootCAM::ARENDTHarry Arendt CAM::Wed Oct 18 1989 18:413
    Nice graphics but nothing to blast. I love those blast em up games!
    Also I love two player games. This will probably not be two player.

3021.15almost there...HYSTER::DEARBORNTrouvez MieuxThu Oct 19 1989 13:3417
It looks interesting, but I think it needs some more work to make
it a "stand out" graphics game.

One big problem with the design: They use pattern fills to
simulate more colors. Feed the composite signal to a color
monitor (not RGB, regular TV) and you get a horrible flickering
of most of the objects, making it almost unwatchable. This is
too bad, because it would be nice to be able to display this
game on a large screen TV. The way it is now, you can't do it.

Unless you don't mind going blind playing it!

    also,where are the other cars that you race?? And how about a outside

    In regards to an outside view, while driving the real Atari version,
    when you crash another view is displayed from outside the vehicle
    showing your mistake. Almost like an instant replay from some
    fixed position.
