4285.0. "Serial port dead?" by LEDS::SKRALY (Sam Skraly, DTN 237-6347) Mon Nov 19 1990 13:22

My serial port appears to be dead--here's the situation:

3Meg A2000
Just installed Fatter Agnus, everything seems to work fine, I now have
1Meg Chip RAM
Scholar modem

I run Handshake (latest version), hit ctrl-B, and nothing happens
(i.e. no "Ready" message). I dial up manually, hit the data/talk
button on the modem, and I get an "Attached" message, but I can't
connect (i.e. no "#" prompt) after hitting several carriage returns.
I checked cables, cycled power on modem and computer--no help.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Sam

Chances are your serial port is not dead since you get an attached
    message. Try these ..

o Double check the settings on your scholar modem
o Check Preferences and set up your serial port there
o Check handshake and make sure it is configured properly
       to match the modem

If all else fails, try using VLT or JR-Comm. Both of those products
    work fine for me.

    1) Do the lights blink when you type?

    2) Is the communication program using the same baud rate as is the
    "default" for the modem?

Also consider switching the Scholar modem to the AT mode or whatever the
Hayes compatible mode is called. Most of the Comm programs are set up
to comply with those modem commands. At least the default setups and
documentation for the comm programs will be geared toward those commands.

Scholar's are funny beasts. Try unplugging and plugging in your
modem a few times. Sometimes it seems to get into a wierd state.
I just had this problem on Saturday myself for the first time in
quite a while. Took about 4 times of replugging before it came
up in a working state and then it was fine. I would try another
modem before trying to repair the amiga.

4285.5Loop-back testLODGE::LENDavid M. LenMon Nov 19 1990 19:142
Try the loop-back test. I don't have a Scholar manual any more, but it
is well documented on how to perform the test.

.1 says that since you are getting the 'ATTACHED' message, it's probably not
your serial port. Not so. My serial port went bad about a year ago, and the
symptom was that it was either read or write only (I don't remember which).
This doesn't mean that it is a problem with the serial port, just that it could
be. If you have a terminal lying around, make sure that the modem works okay,
and try the other suggestions here, but if nothing helps, then it may be your
serial port even though it works one way.

I've had this happen on an A500. I could recieve but not transmit. It
ended up being the RS232 driver/reciever chip pair (1488 and 1489 ?) (driver chip
in my case)

They are (I think) 14 pin dips and cost about $0.75 ad Radio Shack and take
a half hour or so to install (need to unsolder the old one).

4285.8swap your cable tooNAC::BRANNONvalue addedMon Nov 19 1990 23:1915
    re .4:
Same here. Just random line noise while the Scholar modem was not
being used was enough to put it into strange modes that a few power
on/off attempts were needed to get it back to normal.

I've also had the problem of the cable connecting the modem to the
Amiga go flakey with very similar problems to .0's. Text would appear
and only occasionally would a character I typed actually get sent.

By replacing the cable, and switching to a Scholar Plus modem (which I
leave powered off when not in use - power switch is on the front of the
modem - a nice feature) the problems have gone away.

4285.9Still no go...LEDS::SKRALYSam Skraly, DTN 237-6347Thu Dec 06 1990 17:2413
I re-checked my setup and cables--all OK. I put on another, known good,
9600 baud modem, and I'm still dead. Time to take it in for repair...

	1) Where are the best places within striking distance of Westboro,
MA, to get my A2000 repaired? (If this has been discussed, pointers to
other notes would be appreciated). What should I expect to pay?

	2) Are there any diagnostic programs around which check
the serial I/O chip?

Thanks again for all the help.

In my opinion, the best place to go for repairs is:
    		The Memory Location
    		396 Washington Street
    		Wellesley, MA 02181
    		617/237-6846

Their normal hours are 10-6 M-F and 9-5 on Saturday. They have
extended hours until xmas. Call and ask for Roy.

They have very reasonable rates, have most parts in stock, & depending
on what is wrong can repair the system quite fast.
