688.0. "The Dream Goes Beserk" by 18583::ACCIARDI () Thu Sep 03 1987 12:22

Leo Schwab has done it again.

He has created a new demo called 'The Dream Goes Beserk'. I won't
describe it here. I believe he used VideoScape3D to create it.

I've tried to piece the story together from various threads on Plink,
so I may not have it exactly right. Apparently, Leo had created
a demo for some show (it was either Siggraph or the BADGE Killer
Demo Contest). Leo's demo remarkably resembled a demo done on a
megabuck Pixar machine, which was no coincidence. Pixar became
annoyed, and insisted that Leo not distribute his demo. So we'll
    never see that one.

Leo then went back to the drawing board and created 'Dream'.
He first demo'ed it at a recent FAUG meeting (First Amiga Users
Group). The audience went wild. In fact, RJ Mical, Jay Miner,
and Dale Luck came up on the stage to congratulate him. Jay Miner
even hugged him. (To any neophytes, these three guys pretty much
designed the Amiga, and Leo Schwab will probably win the Nobel Prize
in the 'Making the Amiga do Incredible Tricks' category).

I think this is pretty much the background scenario; if anyone can
fill in any missing pieces, please do.

I haven't seen 'Dream' yet, but I expect it to show up on Plink
by the weekend. I'll be camped out there with my finger on the
download button. I just hope it runs on 512K machines for you
folks living in the dark ages.

Leo's latest creation has been sighted on Genie, but hadn't made
it to Plink as of 9/9/87.

Does anyone have a Genie account and some extra download hours to
spare? If not, you probably won't see it here for another week
or so, since our department is moving and it will take some time
for the cluster to get fully operational again.

What is it that you are looking for on GEnie?
688.3LEDS::ACCIARDIWed Sep 09 1987 15:093
Leo's latest demo; it would probably be called 'Dream.arc' or some
    such.

    I'll look for it.

Well, I've got Leo's latest, called "Beserk" whirring away on my
Supradrive, but I've got some good news and some bad news...

Good news: I can absolutely guarantee that you've never seen anything
like this before. Suffice it to say that Leo has outdone himself
again. Also, it's perfectly clear that this animation was intended
to 'irritate' Pixar for blocking his first demo.

Bad News: You'll need a minimum of 1 MByte of RAM to wiew this.
The frames occupy 585 KBytes, and ShowAnim requires another 28 KBytes.
Sorry. All the more reason to get with the program and up the memory
    ante.

Quandry: I don't really know where to upload this ARC to. Our
department cluster is coming down this Friday (9/11) and I'm not
yet sure of my new net address. If someone has a spare 380 KBytes
of storage that they can write un-protect, I'll send it there.

We can go the 'swap the disk' route, but it may take another week
or more to even get our new interoffice mail system functional.

    Look in ROZETT""::AMIGA:

This is a ~1 hour download at 1200bps.

Ditto on the memory problems. I had to completely zap my 1meg system
(fresh reboot, CTL-D before anything happens) to get the full thing
    running.

    To run, unarc and type:

     % ShowAnim -c Berserk

The -c makes it go continuously - otherwise it's over in a flash
and you have to go peruse ShowAnim.doc to see how to get it back.
To those of us desperate to see the beastie, those seconds wasted
    are precious...

    Enjoy.

    Howdy,

Ran Leo's demo. Try it in this configuration... Run boing! and
then then do showanim -c berserk. Then, just as Leo's demo begins
to take over select the boing! screen to the front. The frames
from each will flicker back and forth. Looks real weird with a
    couple of balls rolling around...

P.S. Have you noticed that showanim leaves the amiga in interlace
    mode?
