Commodore, the world leader in design, manufacture, and sales
of home and personal computers, is seeking qualified individuals
to work in our West Chester, PA corporate engineering organization.

In our exciting environment, hardware, software, and VLSI engineers
work as a single team to specify and develop new systems. As a small
entrepreneurial organization, each engineer is a significant contributer
through the actual market introduction of his new product. As a large
corporation, Commodore has the resources to successfully develop and
market new products very quickly. Commodore maintains its own complete
vertically integrated manufacturing operations from silicon foundry to
final product.

The Amiga System Software Group of Commodore technology has several
openings for individuals to develop and enhance the Amiga Computer system.
Become part of the team of designers who shape the next generation of
Amiga system software.

equivalant, plus a minimum of 5 years experience as a software
engineer, with at least two years as a project manager or above.
C programming experience is required. Knowledge of 68000 assembler,
the Amiga and UNIX(R) systems is highly desirable.

SENIOR FONT PROGRAMMER

Responsibilities will include a development work on the outline font rendering
system to be used on the Amiga computer, and the bitmap font rendering system.

systems is highly desirable.

SENIOR GRAPHICS PROGRAMMER

Responsibilities include development work on the Amiga graphics library,
including development work on a device independent graphics library as
well as extending the current graphics library to new hardware platforms.

in graphics, and a minimum of 4 years programming experience of
graphics systems. C and 68000 assembly programming experience
is required. Knowledge of the Amiga and UNIX(R) systems highly desirable.

I know, some of the software jobs look *real* good!

In fact, from the specific requirements they are looking for, What
speculation can we make?

1. CBM is building new grahpics hardware for Amiga
2. CBM is writing a device independant graphics library for Amiga
3. ?

Commodore also had an ad for hardware engineers in the Boston Sunday
Globe on 30-Sep. If I remember correctly, they were looking for someone
who would interface with 3rd party hardware developers. If I get time,
I'll locate the ad and enter it this evening.

    re:.1

You can assume either they have been working on it for a while, and
decided that they need more people... or ... they just came up
with the idea, and would like to implement it when they can hire
    somebody to do it :-)

Either way, it does indicate some commitment to improving the
amiga hardware and software. Not just talk. The question is if
they can ship something by the end of the year. The rest of the
pc market isn't going to wait for them to catch up in the graphics
area. On the other hand, by the time they come out with something
that can handle 1024x768xzillions of colors, the price for monitors
that can do that will be much cheaper due to the pc clone industry.

As promised, from Sunday Globe of Sep 30.

"It's been said that the future of computing lies in the concept of
multimedia - the fusion of video, animation, graphics, color and sound.
Well at Commodore, the future is here. Because with the introduction of
the new Amiga line of computers and the AmigaVision authoring system,
Commodore is the one computer company that's making this concept a
    reality today.

    Hardware Support Engineer

In this key position, you'll provide hardware development support to
third party developers by direct contact, telephone, electronic
information systems and in writing. You must have hardware design
development experience combined with strong communication skills,
the ability to write technical articles and assist in hardware
developer documentation, and programming experience in a high level
language (C preferred). Amiga computer experience is a plus. 68000
    series experience preferred."

Don't get too excited folks! Commodore is in no way in good shape as
far as being an employer. Thier benie's are not anything near what
larger computer companies are paying and their layoff policy is
non-existant. They have no qualms about cutting you off at the end of
the week on the day before christmas. I don't want to cast a real bad
light on the company (my former employer by the way, I was MIS manager
for the Semiconductor Division until 1987, I left them!) but they are
still struggling and are still infamous in this area (phila) for having
    a high turnover rate.

On the other hand, if you realllllllllllly want to get a job
programming amiga's instead of vaxes or pc's, then give them a try.
Most of the good amiga developers all worked for commodore at one time
    or another.

4188.6Ad in today's Globe...CADSE::CARRAsleep at the mouseSun Oct 14 1990 16:1219
    Re: -.1

Actually, I think the intent of this note is that our 2nd favorite ;-)
computer company is finally getting serious about making inroads
into the business marketplace. And fwiw, there's yet another Commodore
ad in today's (14-Oct) Boston Globe (I'll refrain from typing the whole
    ad in this time)

"Multimedia is real at Commodore.... As part of our plan to bring this
technology to the corporate desktop, we are expanding our "evangelical"
staff and seking an Applications Manager for Business/Productivity
Products ... to work with major independent software vendors to arrange
for the development or portation of business and productivity software
to the Commodore Amiga line of computers".

    Evangelical, I love it.

Wasn't outline fonts an original offering for 2.0

Reading between the lines , does this mean a deal with AGFA
Compugraphic fonts fell through. And only now patching it up.

    Re: .7

Outline fonts were already scheduled for a post 2.0 release in
    February (Paris DevCon).
To the best of my knowledge, nothing fell thru anything.
Things like these just tend to take very loooong.

Re: .7

Almost all of the statements about outline fonts I saw said "Outline
fonts may make it into 2.0." Sometime the statements were followed
by "But it looks like it will have to wait until 2.1."

Sometimes "2.0" was written as "1.4," and "2.1" as "1.5." :-)

Well to the best of my knowledge it is not on the beta releases.
