3485.0. "HELP! Want to connect an RD32 (SEAGATE ST-225)" by ENOVAX::BARRETT (The optical mouse that roared) Thu Feb 15 1990 13:37

    I managed to obtain an RD32 and would like to use it on the Ami. The
    drive is labeled a SEAGATE ST-225. It's a 5.25" halfheight 40meg drive,
    with 2 ribbon cable connections, a power connector, and a jumper block.
    I'm out of my field here and have no documentation, so I have
    many questions.

    First the basic question:

    1) Can this drive be made to work? Has anyone done it?

    2) I assume the jumpers are a unit select. Can someone tell me what the
    settings mean - they are not even labeled 0-8.

    3) I have an XT bridgeboard with a miniscribe 338 running on a
    hardcard. Can this drive be connected also? Are the pinout for the
    ribbon cables and power connector compatible (power coming from the Ami
    of course). If so, How would I go about formatting it since I have no
    support software.

    My real goal is to have this drive running on the Ami bus, not the XT
    side. SO:

    1) Will the CHEAPHD controller work with this drive?

    2) Can it be made to autoboot?

    Any and ALL help is greatly appreciated. I won't be able to do it
    otherwise. Perhaps someone could give me a step-by-step method of
    getting it online?

    Thanks everyone for the answers. I managed to grab CHEAPHD, MAKEHD, and
    HDSOURCE. What are the differences between these files?
    I'm not mixing up 2 different projects am I?

    Re: .1

    I did several /TITLEs before this post, including "RD", "DISK", and
    "DRIVE". The information is VERY scattered through out the conference,
    as it isin topics based on an individual's problem rather than a
    meaningful topic.

    Well actually, I have one of each (an RD31 and an RD32). The RD31 is
    the ST225 20 meg drive, the RD32 is the 40 meg. I intended only to
    reference the RD32 in this post, but screwed up. Sorry! My intention is
    each to a different Amiga computer.

    >Download the cheaphd zoo file (can't remember what it's called), it's
    >all in there except mounting the drive in the 2000 box !!

    I've seen several files in different locations and having slightly
    different titles. Can I verify that what I got is everything I need
    somehow?

    Thanks for all the other information. Forgive me if this seems too
    novice.

3485.4Files belong togetherJGO::LOENDERSLOOTFri Feb 16 1990 06:1610
    The CHEAPHD, MAKEHD, HDSOURCE files are belonging together. The
    CHEAPHD file was missing the sourcelistings to assemble the
    'harddisk.device' for MFM devices. The sources are in HDSOURCE together
    with the assembled versions (for MFM and RLL). This setup works
    very well for me. The only restriction is that you have to use an
    OMTI or a ST11-M harddisk controler.

3485.5This may be a stupid question, but:ENOVAX::BARRETTOf Optical Mice and Men...Fri Feb 16 1990 14:161
    I assue that the RD31 and RD32 are RLL?
3485.6MFM !AYOV28::ATHOMSONC'mon, git aff! /The Kelty ClippieFri Feb 16 1990 14:3310
    I'm afraid not. The ST225 numbers are

    ST225	20Mb 	MFM
    ST225R	30Mb 	RLL
    ST225N	?    	SCSI (I think it's 30Mb too.)

    All the RD31s I've seen are plain vanilla ST225
