3424.0. "need help for 500 not working correctly." by AIMHI::DEROO () Fri Feb 02 1990 15:45

My 500 is acting up. It's a second hand machine that I have had about a
    month. Symptoms are as follows:

    1) Sometimes on power up the screen remains dark instead of the white
    background with a hand.

2)after about a half hour of use a hissing / static sound strts and
slowly gets louder....then rises and falls (if i rap a little on the
top cover this sometimes seems to make it quiet or it could be
coincidence. I hesitate to smack it good to find out) this continues
    indefintely.

    3) My only copy protected game seems to lock up frequently on disk
access. Non protected disks access fine.

Any thoughts / advice for a new user would be great.

    thanks-

is that hissing / static sound coming from inside your 500 or from
    the speaker on your monitor?

Not speaking from personal experience, I understand that many early
A500s had a tendancy for the Fat Agnus chip to loosen in it's socket.
A reseating of the chip may be worth trying.

Later models use a clip to retain the chip.

Note: I wouldn't recommend knocking or dropping the computer to try to
    reseat the chip.

The sound is definitely coming from the speaker. I guess I will need to
open it up soon and try reseating the chips.

On another subject entirely.....Are the Abacus books the best source of
amiga information or just the most common?

    Thanks-
