3355.0. "VAUX-KILLER Demo problems" by MSVAX::BARRETT (Is my PC a PicoVAX?) Wed Jan 17 1990 15:35

    I downloaded FF 265 and 266 in a desire to see the VAUX-KILLER demo.
    After downloading them, de-zooing them, and following directions
    (which were not exactly correct), I managed to get the script to
    run. After it loaded most everything, it failed with an error "Can't
    insert movie" and them a requestor appeared saying something like
    "can't play nothing" (sorry, but I can't remember the exact wording).

    Does anyone know what's happening here? Has anyone gotten it to
    work?

3355.1I needed more than 1 meg of memory to run it.CSC32::K_APPLEMANWed Jan 17 1990 16:4713
    Yes, I have gotten VAUX-killer to run. One thing I needed to run it
    was more than 1 meg of memory. I have 3 meg, but wanted to send a copy
    to my brother who only had 1 meg, so I disabled the expansion memory
    and tried to run the demo. It failed with a "can't load xxxxxx"
    insufficient memory. The message wasn't exactly like that. It only
    stayed on the screen for a couple of seconds so I can't remember
    exactly what it was.

    You might also have to move the files from the subdirectory they are in
    to the top directory. Don't recall if this is necessary, but I've
    found that to be the case on a couple of these demo's.

3355.2Problems with hard driveSMURF::DCJWed Jan 17 1990 17:0317
    I have managed to get VAUX-killer to run off of floppies, but not when
    I install it on my hard disk. I think there might be some interaction
    problems with VirusX (just a guess, until I manage to determine what
    works reliably).

    The symptoms are having the program load completely and giving me the
    white screen. Pressing 'p' has no effect. Sometimes I can get the
    workbench back, and sometimes the machine gurus. It does run if I
    cold-boot with Kickstart 1.3 (I have an A1000), and boot with a plain
    Workbench 1.3.2 without any of the hard drive startup routines.

    I would really like to be able to load off the hard drive, as 11
    minutes is just too long to wait for a demo. Has anyone else succeeded
    in running off of a hard drive? Any suggestions?

3355.3Also only on floppies - but worth it.UBEAUT::MANDERSONMonday oneday, Tuesday the nextWed Jan 17 1990 19:1612
    Like Dave in .2 I have only got it to run off floppies. I couldn't get
    the logicals and directories to work with it from my HD - it deletes
    some as it gets going.

    11 minutes has to be for 2 floppies - try it on a single floppy system
    and it takes 'somewhat' (!)longer than that because of the heaps and
    heaps of disk changes.

    persevere - it's worth it - a great, amusing demo.

3355.4DOes it work with a 1MEG A500??GIDDAY::MORANI'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way!Wed Jan 17 1990 23:0010
    With the people who have got the demo to run off floppies how much
    memory have you got as I have 1 meg 500 and I cannot get the demo to
    run off floppies. It comes up with some ever when it runs out of
    memory.

    This is a REAL shame as I would like to see the demo as everyone says
    it is fairly amusing.

And How! I have 3 Meg and had to boot minimum. It soaked every bit of
spendable cash (RAM) I had!

    re .4

    Don't worry too much. It's a neat demo but it's not THAT great in my
    opinion. (I wouldn't buy an extra 2 mb just to see it).
