3251.0. "Do you have this problem with Falcon?" by KYOA::MIANO (Mad Mike's Mythical Miracle) Thu Dec 21 1989 23:59

I have encountered what I believe is a bug in Falcon that makes
ground attack missions a Lt Col and COL level nearly impossible.
The problem is that whenever the F-16 is heavily loaded and you try
to do serious manovering the plane goes into an uncontrolable spin and
crashes. This problem occurs even after the weapons load is dropped so
I don't believe this is the intended behavior.

I have called S-H about the problem and the sent me an upgrade.
Unfortunately the upgrade did not fix the problem. The guys
a S-H say they can't reproduce the problem and they think I'm crazy so
could some of you Falcon players try the following:

1) Select a pilot at COL level and the MILK RUN mission.
2) Load the plane with one external tank and two pairs of 2000lb bombs.
3) Take off with full afterburners going.
4) As soon as you are high enough drop the weapons load and the external
tank.
5) Climb to 20,000ft.
6) Point the nose straight up and reduce the throttle until the plane
stalls.

(This point of this test is to heavily load the plane, dump the load so
that you should go from a bomber to an agile fighter again, climb to an
altitude that is high enough to recover from a stall, then stall the
plane.)

When I do this the lady comes on and says "WARNING WARNING WARING..."
and the plane behaves as though it lost its wings. I even get this
problem when I try to do a roll with three Maverick.

If you get this problem could you please reply here and call
Spectrum-Holobyte to report the problem so they won't think I'm insane.

Well maybe I am insane, but you guys could make me feel a whole lot
better.

At the risk of REALLY boring everyone to death, if my experiences
with S/W companies is anything to go by, forget trying to get anything
done about it. The guys who write the reviews of these things in
the magazines often discover bugs like this, but happily ignore
them and give the game Rave Reviews and 95% etc., because they want
    the advertising.

This is beyond my flight experiance. However do you lose controll
if you do not force the stall ? It sounds to me like you could have
this experiance in a real F-16. Of course I my be the insane one.
any expreianced pilots out there that know wha the real plane
would do under these conditions.(I know I would be dead very quickly)

The reason I think this must be a bug is that if you perform
that exact same manover with out the bombs the plane handles fine.
It is quite simple to recover from the stall.

I thought that:

takeoff-with-bombs => drop-bombs => climb => stall

and

takeoff-without-bombs => climb => stall

would be equivalent but they are not.

3251.4looks like a flawSALEM::LEIMBERGERWed Dec 27 1989 09:1510
I see! Then it would appear that the software is not resetting the
variable,or whatever that holds this data,so in effect does not
know that you have dropped the bombs. This type of bug should not
be hard for the programmer to address, but I would not expect it
to be fixed unless another major revision was released, and enough
people complained about it.While they may not fix this bug now,one
has to give credit for the 020 version update, and mission disk support.
This would indicate that we may have reported bugs fixed in later
    revisions.

Has anyone tried to run Falcon under the new OS? Mine is crashing and
I am attempting to determine whether it is the new ROM or my setup.

My version of Falcon crashes also on 2.0 so I think it is the software.
