3117.0. "Printer cable problem, disables second drive" by BSS::BENNING () Wed Nov 15 1989 17:25

I just got an Amiga 500 system with a second floppy drive and printer.

The problem I am having is that the printer is a Panasonic 1901i and
the cable for it is not a Commodore cable either. Both drives work
fine until I plug in the printer, then I can not get to the second
    drive.

I think I have heard somewhere that there may be a pin that should be
disabled on a non Commodore cable but can not remember which pin.

I am a first time Amiga user and other than this it seems like a great
    machine.

ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

AHHA! - TELL ME - IS YOUR PRINTER CABLE HOME MADE?

I had this problem once. I made up a ribbon cable with a male end
and female end. But I got one of the plugs upside down - instead
of pin 1 1 going to pin 1/2 to 2 etc I had pin 1 going to 14...

I had the same problem with my external drive...

Solution: undo plug on one end of ribbon and turn it over - then
        re-connect.

This may NOT be your problem - check your cable first and make sure:
The following config is in place...

    male Female

Pin 14 on the parallel connector contains voltage.
3117.3Printer working and second drive too!BSS::BENNINGWed Nov 22 1989 02:004
It was pin 16 the Init signal that was doing it. I pulled that pin out
and the printer and both drives now work. I don't remember who sent me
mail about the Init pin but thanks a bunch!!!!! I even got the modem
working and an doing this on my Amiga from home sure is fun!!!
