2844.0. "Amiga marketing, production and sales plans" by TLE::RMEYERS (Randy Meyers) Fri Aug 18 1989 23:20

The following is the best Amiga news I've seen in a long time. Not
the hardware introductions that the poster claims will take place,
but the rumors of Commodore's commitment to advertising:

John,
As a CBM dealer who has seen the (Oct/Nov/Dec) Production, Sales, and
Marketing plans, I can tell you that it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that the A3k will
be out by the end of the year.

There are a number of exciting releases scheduled over the next
90-120 days including;

2630 - 68030 at 25MHz with 25MHz 68882 and integrated MMU. 2-4MBs of 32
	bit RAM.
2091 -	Autobooting HD Controller supports 7 SCSI devices (0 ST-506). Works
with severe overscan 4 bit-plane screens. Will allow mounting of 3.5"
device on board. Socketed for 2 MBs of 16bit DRAM.
2094 -	Kit to bring a 2000 up to a 2000HD configuration. (2091, 40MBHD,
	software and cables) Factory configured.
2090b -	Half-Size Card that allows the A2090 to autoboot.
2232 -	Multi-Serial Board. Supports 7 ports on a single card. (external
chassis or what?) Drivers for UN*X and AmigaDos.
2065 -	10Mbit/sec Ethernet interface with support for both Thick and Thin
Ethernet and AmigaDos support for NFS, TCP/IP, and Novell.
2024 - Hi-Resolution Monochrome Monitor supports 1008x800 with AutoSwitch
to lower resolutions and deinterlacing. Requires 1MB RAM and works
	on any Amiga.

CBM will also be advertising in a BIG way over the last quarter of
the calendar year. We are talking 14 Million U.S. dollars, hitting all the
TV, Mags, Newspapers etc. 14 Million, according to my rep will put CBM in
the top 80 U.S. advertisers, a list that Apple and IBM are _not_ a part of!
(And we've all seen that little helo-car commercial, HOW MANY TIMES?!)
According to CBM, each person in the target market, will see a commercial
an average of 20 times over the months of October, November and December!
The TV commercials (a 30 second spot and a 60 second spot) will be
produced by George Lucas (from what I am told, he turned down a lot of
other jobs, but has an Amiga and I guess he's excited enough about the Amiga
to do the work for CBM) and directed by Mathew Robbins.
The dealer network is currently going through a process of
requalification. CBM is being very strict about what they want out of
their dealers, and a lot of the excess baggage is going to go. Only
committed, supportive, top-dealers will remain.

That's it, in brief. This is a _big_ move on CBM's part to really
kick the personal computer market in the a**. I for one am EXTREMELY
EXCITED about this news and am behind Commodore 110%. I only hope that
it excites the rest of the dealers and the Amiga users out there as much
as it does me, and that we can all work together to give the Amiga the
kind of recognition and sales that it deserves.

I'd heard about that ad campaign. I also heard that Harold Copperman
wryly commented that he 'hoped he was around long enough' to actually
    implement it.

At least he has a sense of humor.

Subj: Commodore Ads (R)
From: Sysop
  To: All Members

As you may have already heard, Commodore is going to advertise the Amiga
heavily starting in October. I have some additional information that I
want to share with A.M.U.G.'s Members. You can repeat it if you like, I
wasn't able to extract any secrets from the ad agency.

Printed ads are going to start appearing in Time magazine starting in
October. They will consist of seven consecutive pages arranged in pairs
with a final wrap up page. The left page will depict an artsy photo of a
professional using an Amiga application and the right page will be an
amateur using a similar application. Each ad will contain pictures of
six people. One of them is my wife Pam. There will be two separate sets
of these ads and we are not sure which set Pam will be in. You will know
Pam when you see the ad when you see stacks of papers and books in the
picture. There will also be a new dealer demo released before Christmas.
Pam and I were interviewed on videotape for the dealer demo. The ad
agency was very pleased with the interview so we should be on the demo
tape.

Ok, here's the good stuff. Commodore's TV ads will be shown on network
television. I was told, "There are going to be so many Amiga ads on TV
this Christmas that you are going to get sick of seeing them." I said,
"I'll never get sick of seeing Amiga ads." They wouldn't tell me much
about the TV spots but I will tell you what they said. LucasFilms is
doing the ads. They will feature a small boy named Stevie who will do
wonderful things with his Amiga. I got the impression that Stevie would
be faced with a situation and use his Amiga to solve a problem. I'm
assuming that the special effects will show off the Amiga's features,
rather than replace them. These ads will probably start in October also.
They are casting for the Stevie role as I write this. They are going to
make Amiga into a household word. After this campaign people won't say
"What's an Amiga" if you happen to mention that you own one.

Subj: New Amiga Slogan (R)
From: Sysop
  To: All

The new Amiga Slogan is: Amiga, the Computer for the Creative Mind, if
my memory serves me well. Just thought you would like to know. Only
Amiga makes it possible was good but I like the new slogan better. It
has a better point to make. After all, the Amiga is best utilized by
creative people. It brings out the creative spirit in anyone who dares
to try its power and performance. So the Amiga makes it possible but end
user creativity makes it happen.

This shift in focus could help the new ad campaign succeed where others
have failed. In my recent contacts with the ad agency handling the Amiga
compaign, I have noticed one very important fact. Everyone that I met
was really interested in learning about the Amiga and had a hard driving
attitude geared towards making the new campaign succeed. They intend to
put the word Amiga on everyone's lips starting in October. This is going
to be a big campaign.

Oh, if only I could buy more Commodore stock. It will never be this
cheap again. OK, just out of curiosity, check option '9' on the bulletin
menu when you call. I usually update it after 5:00 PM. Sometimes I'm
late and once in a long while I forget but most of the time the info is
up to date. When this message was written CBU was 10 & 5/8ths. I predict
it will be back up to $19 per share by next spring. I'm not a stock
analyst, just an Amiga enthusiast.

Old topic, but... Here comes the onslaught! Looks like the
_Entertainment Tonight_ feature on the new Commodore ads will be
part of the build-up to the ads themselves. Here's a tidbit from

Entertainment Tonight will have a segment on 'The Making of the
New Commodore-Amiga Commercials' tonight. It is on channel 3 (NBC) at
7:00 EST here in the Philadelphia area. I believe the thrust of the
segment will be that it is the first time George Lucas and ILM
(Indistrial Light & Magic) have done a commercial. Watch for it!

Sounds good.

On a remotely similar note:

Did anyone watch ALF last night? (Yes I have to admit I find the alien
furr ball funny sometimes). The show was about ALF investing in the
stock market using guess what??? An Amiga 2000! Couldn't really tell it
was an Amiga though, 'cause they never really gave a good shot of it. Of
course those of us who know what one looks like could tell from the 1080,
the keyboard, and the box. You could even hear the FAN blasting away.
I think they may have even souped the FAN noise up a bit as it seemed
inordinately loud.

steve

Could some merciful and extraordinary kind soul please consider
video-taping this E.T. show tonight and the commercials once they
get on the air??? I do own an NTSC video recorder and a multi-norm
TV... Maybe I'll be able to catch the E.T. show on AFNTV (American
Forces TV) but since they don't show commercials, I could never
hope to get those from this source.

    Thanks very much,

That was indeed an A2000 on Alf last night. Seems they traded in last
    year's PS/2 Model 30.

    I could recognize the unique '2 3.5" over 1 5.25"' bay configuration.

Hmmm... Entertainment Tonight did not have any 'inside the Amiga
Commercials' this evening (10-OCT)but I pulled this off of PLINK; looks
like it may happen on 11-OCT.
