2823.0. "Help! Amiga 2000 power problems!" by LOWLIF::DAVIS (That's not a BUG, it's a FEATURE!) Thu Aug 10 1989 13:36

aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhAAAAAAHHHHHHHH! (My Amiga 2000 died last night)

I was just loading up the Music-X demo (thanks Ed) when the power to my
B2000 shut off. Now when I try to turn it on the power comes on for a
few seconds and then goes back off. I pulled my hard disk out and even
disconnected power to the floppies with no luck. I did notice that when
it comes on, the fan never starts to spin up.

Any hardware GURUs have any ideas??????

    I'm not a hardware guru, but it sure sounds like a fried power supply
    to me.

2823.2Maybe a shorted backplane..PUERTO::ALVAREZBack in Puerto RicoThu Aug 10 1989 19:4512
    	I'm no power supply expert, and I don't know anything about
    the A2000 pwr supply, but my guess would be a short at the output
    of the power supply.
    	Some power supplies incorporate circuits that will shutdown
    the power supply if it detects currents above a certain limit on
    its output.

    	So maybe, just maybe, something is shorting out your A2000
    backplane. If my assumption is correct your power supply should
    work if you can remove the short.

    	This problem sounds exactly like a problem I saw on another
    B2000. The fix was a new power supply.

But don't overlook the obvious. Make sure the power cord is plugged
into the wall and into the computer. Once my 2000 wouldn't power up
because the power cord was working itself loose from the connector
on the back of the Amiga.

Good Luck.

Thanks all. I called a local repair center and they told me it would
be two weeks before they could even look at it! OUCH! It does sound
like some sort of overload that is causing the power supply to shutdown,
but I'm just a software weenie so what do I know.

I poked around inside the box and didn't see much so I guess I get to
wait for a month or so to get it working again. What fun...

    Note that I'm basically a software weenie, too. But I've diged into
    hardware quite often. I go for the overload/short circuit theory,
    too.
    Since the turbine, erh, fan won't start generating noise ;-) ,
    I'd say that you disconnect it and try without it...

2823.7Burned out fan??LEDS::ACCIARDIFri Aug 11 1989 10:4210

    The power supply on my 2000 won't come up if the fan is disconnected.
    I found this out whislt swapping in a less noisy fan that I picked up
    at Radio Shack. In fact, if your fan were burned out, it might cause
    the problem you describe.

    I'd try replacing the fan with a comparable Radio Shack unit. If it
    doesn't work, you can always get your money back.

If that doesn't work, try removing all removable things from the system
(modules, disk drives, monitor etc.) to see if you can get the supply
to come up and stay up (fan keeps spinning). If it does, replace things
one by one till it dies again. When it does, you've found the faulty
module.

Thanks again everyone, my Amiga lives again!!!!! It _WAS_ the fan. I went
straight to Radio Shack and got a replacement and I'm back in business!

Yes, I'm definitely a happy camper...

My 2000 came with the fan wire broken. It had been caught under
the cover of the power supply. The computer worked (although it
got rather hot.) I fixed the wire and now live with its Pratt &
Whitney whine.
