1920.0. "Comic Setter upsets" by CHEFS::SKINNER (Doveyai no Proveyai) Wed Nov 30 1988 10:01

I bought a opy of Comic Setter on my last trip West, largely because
it costs about 60pounds here, as opposed to $60 US. However it doesn't
want to talk to me. When I load it it first complains about my
printer (not a real problem), then says "North America only - goodby",
    or words to that effect.
     I
have written to them (there's absolutely nothing in the advertising
or documentation or licence that restricts it), but does anyone
have an idea what they may be looking at , and how to fix it? It's
not the keyboard mapping, which is as far as I've got to date.
Could it be clock frequency ?

1920.1NTSC v PAL ???AYOV28::ATHOMSONC'mon, git aff! /The Kelty ClippieWed Nov 30 1988 10:2011

It's probably the video standard, there does seem to be two versions
of Comic Setter as the reviews I've seen in the magazines here
certainly show a full screen picture - so there is obviously a PAL
version. It does sound a bit brain damaged though, almost as if
they are checking to ensure that the system is NTSC and when they
find it isn't..... byeeee... Instead of letting it run in 200/400
line mode rather than 256/512 (like Dpaint etc. do)

I take it from your comment about things costing pounds that you
hail from England or somewhere else in Europe.

I would hazard a guess that the software doesn't support the PAL
version of the graphics chips. I gather from reading this notes
file and other comments that there are two different sets of Amiga
graphics chips, one for NTSC and the other for the PAL standard.

This may not in fact be the problem, so anybody else like to confirm
or squash this possible answer ?

It seems several companies have started producing seperate versions
for Europe and North America. My son bought the Three Stooges while
he was in Germany this summer. When he got it home all it would do
was play the introduction over and over. We called Cinemaware and
they said to send it to them. We had a new North American copy in
two days. So if Gold Disk's service is as good as Cinemaware's you
    shouldn't have any problems.

I tried this approach: I called the UK distributor for Gold Disk
and spoke to a chap called Swallow who told me that they were having
lots of problems with parallel imports like this, so they introduced
the separate versions to make life more difficult. No, he wasn't
interested in helping me. He also has a different way of changing
pounds into dollars - I can get $1.80 for my pounds, he seems to
think that if I paid $60 US then paying 60 pounds is much the same
    thing.
The differentiation is based on the video standard, so hopefully
the new chip set will remove this temptation.

Nope. I'll bet that the new chip set comes in both a PAL and NTSC
version.

I wrote to Gold Disk around the time I put my last note in, but
haven't had the courtesy of a reply yet! Is this typical of their
    responsiveness ?
