1620.0. "ARC? USENET? its a mystery!" by SUBURB::PEAKES (Who is this guy anyway?) Tue Aug 23 1988 13:27

 Ok chaps...

    I know you've probably heard this from every green /
    wet-behind-the-ears / novice / etc new user of this notes conference
    but....

    What is ARC? and What is USENET?

    Everybody seems to be most knowledgeable about the ins & outs of
    using the aforementioned, but nobody has actually stated what they
    actually are.

    Yes, I know I sound ignorant but that's probably because I am at
    present. :-)

    Having heard numerous references to the pools of software available
    on the net, I'm anxious to work out how to get hold of some of it.

    Please, please, please will someone produce an idiots guide or
    something?

    Yours, wallowing in this conference,

    Steve Peake
    :-)

    ARC: a file compression program for the IBM PC which has been ported
    to the Amiga (and probably several other machines). ARC compresses
    individual files 20-50% or more and packages files so that a group
    of related files can be sent or archived as one "filename.arc" file.

    Look at
    	MVCAD3::USER0:[AMIGA.ARC] for Amiga executable and document
    	MVCAD3::USER0:[AMIGA.TOOLS] for VAX executable
    Note that you may have to change file formats on VMS using the CVTARC
    utility, also in the tools directory.

    USENET: A big, worldwide news network with about 250 conferences,
    four of which are Amiga-specific. Highly variable information content,
    assumed level of expertise, and arcaneness of subject. The conference
    "comp.sys.amiga" averages 50 kbytes of postings per day. Highly
    UNIX-oriented, with a dense in-jargon. Postings have gallons of
    speculation and ounces of fact. Public domain software in the two
    software groups good quality but small volume.

    To receive Usenet newsgroups inside Digital, you must subscribe to the
    forwarding service offered on ROLL::. Starting points:

    	ROLL::ENETDIS.DOC	(that's right, no drive or directory)
    	the Notes conference ROLL::USENET

    Downloading software from the Easynet/Usenet: Best place to start
    is to have someone in your office with any home computer, not
    necessarily an Amiga, show you how. Best ways to learn the jargon
    and the quirks of PD software for Amiga are to sit down with a more
    experienced person or go to a users' group meeting.

    Thanks, with such a concise reply I know what I'm up against now.
    (Can't wait to get downloading!)

    Many many thanks for taking the time to reply to such a beginners
    query.

1620.3have I got a deal for you...LEDS::ACCIARDIHeisenberg may have slept hereWed Aug 24 1988 12:0211

    Send me some e-mail and I'll arrange to get you a disk with some
    needed starter utilities on it. It includes ARC, a few terminal
    programs, some mini-shells that make the Amiga CLI much less kludgy
    and a few other goodies.
