1494.0. "Fantastic Animation!" by LEDS::ACCIARDI (I Blit, therefore I am...) Wed Jun 22 1988 14:50

I downloaded a fantastic HAM animation called 'GhostPool' that was
    written up in INFO magazine.

There are 154 seperate frames of interlaced HAM images generated
by DBW_Render (Hi Dave!). Uncompressed, there are over 6 Megs worth
of images. The frames are compressed and animated using Byte-by-Byte's
PD Movie! software. Compressed, the whole animation fits into 437
    KBytes.

However, there are digitized sounds, too, so you really need a 1
    meg Amiga to play it.

This was a 1 hour download at 1200 baud using WXmodem (from Plink),
so figure on 2 hours with Vanilla Xmodem or 4 hours with Kermit.

Any brave souls want to download it? If so, I'll place it in my
account. You'll also need the latest Movie! software, which I'll
    include.

      //
    \X/ Ed.

PLUG: DBW_Render seems to generate the most realistic looking scenes
of all the ray tracers available. This isn't just my opinion,
but the general consensus of ray tracing addicts on Plink.

I'm brave also. Please post it's location. I read about this one
a few weeks ago and I was hoping that someone would be nice enough to
present it to all of the graphics junkies that are looking for another
    'fix' in this notesfile :-)

    Oh Yeah,
I saw this at a recent user group meeting. I was really impressed.
The sound includes a digitized voice and ball clicking/pocket clunking.
It's definitely worth the D/L time.

I know this subject is somewhat off limits for me but.... just in case you're
interested I've just completed a new "micro" ray tracer with better image
quality than DBW_Render and if I'm able to implement a new algorithm I found,
it could run up to 100 times faster.

Now don't start drooling.....

Here's a request to anyone who may be working on math-intensive
    software... :^)

Please try to implement the new math library that will automatically
call the math chip if present. So far, under 1.3, I've only found
a few programs that use the AmigaDOS double-precision math library.
Sculpt-3D apparently does all of it's math internally. Bummer.

By the way, looks like I won't be able to upload this stuff until
Friday 6/24 or later. I tried last night, but there was a monsoon
going on that affected my phone lines.

Does this mean it won't run at all on a 512K machine, or just no sound?

RE: .-1

Interceptor requires at least 512 K bytes. On 512K byte machines, it
is recommended that the external drive be disconnected for improved sound.

It is recommended that you have 1 megabyte of memory to maximize
sound capabilities, as well as to view the demonstration flight in full.

I noticed that only about 25% of the demo flight ran when I first
booted my disk after seeing the full demo at the store. I don't know exactly
what sounds we're missing, but the basic engine roar seemed the same as
with more memory. (I didn't have the drive disconnected).

I then added the addmem command to the Interceptor startup-sequence
to configure my spirit 1.5 meg internal Ram and can now run the full demo
    and hear all the sounds.

be deleted or moved to the Interceptor note ?

RE: -2

	I have 2 meg, so I can't answer your question about 512K, but I
downloaded GhostPool last night. Thanks John, great animation. I can hardly
wait for John to upload the sound files.

Sound files are now uploaded for Ghostpool. I also uploaded another
animation called "Raisin" along with Movie 1.3.

There is also am IFF picture file "Samples.pic" that I uploaded
that shows a few new fonts I got from a PD disk.

Sorry for the delay, but it's been crazy around here the last few
    days (weeks...months...).

I uploaded ghostpool and tried it. I don't think it is very good
at all. I was very unimpressed. It seems like a huge (enormous)
waste of time to raytrace all of those frames, when a few icons
could have been manipulated from BASIC to produce a "movie" of the
    same quality.

I am not a fan of BASIC, and don't even remember how to program
in it, but I'm sure I could implement a ghostpool like animation
in less then the time it would take to ray trace one or two frames.

Raisin is just "cute", absolutely will not blow your socks off though.

I have a couple of other animations I'll upload to my area when
    I get a chance.

One is of the Boing ball crashing through two walls...

The other you'll have to see to believe...

Actually, it speaks rather highly of the Amiga that we have become
so jaded that animations that a few years ago would have been
considered science fiction now rate a "ho hum" response.

re:	.4

Well... I told you not to drool. Sure enough, the new algorithm is "100 times
faster than a standard ray-tracer"... unfortunatly their definition of a
"standard ray-tracer" is a ray-tracer without any extents. All my ray-tracers
have oct-tree extents and guess what? They're already 130 times faster than
a "standard ray-tracer"!!!

Oh well.. back to the drawing board. (Don't worry... I'm not giving up yet!)

    re: .21--What are "extents"?
        John Sauter
1494.23ExtentsBARDIC::RAVANMon Jul 11 1988 17:028
"Extents" are bounding volumes defined around an object by the software
to allow a quick check for determining whether or not a given light ray
might have hit it. One of the attributes of extents are how tightly they
cover the original object which determines how many times the bounding
volume check says "yes, go do the expensive intersection check", but
then the expensive check ends up saying there was no hit after all.

1494.24More Animations and ToolsWINNER::JBERNARDJohn Bernard YWO/292-2591Mon Jul 25 1988 15:3349
Since this seemed like a likely place to post this...

I have uploaded the following files to WINNER""::DISK$USER_1:[JBERNARD.AMIGA].

DISPLAY.ARC Display is a replacement for ShowAnim and will play animations
DISPLAY.DOC in HASH and ANIM formats. It supports the -C and -L modes of
anim files. In addition, the user may change the playback
speed, freeze frame, and single step through the animation
as it is playing. I have had very good luck with this utility
showing animations I could not play previously without
                rebooting with a "normal" workbench.
Display will not show "movie" format animations, so
it looks like the animation players you need in your
                toolbox are Movie and Display...

Display will also show IFF picture files.
I extracted the .doc file for further info....

Berserk.arc This animation is an update to Leo's original, using a couple
new utilities on the market. I downloaded this last night
                from PLINK.

CUDA.arc This is an animation of a shipwreck with barracuda swimming
                by. Nicely done animation.

STCREW.arc A nice picture of Capt. Picard and Yar, all done freehand.
                Downloaded from PLINK.

TUNAJune.txt News and Rumors text file.

Select A startup-sequence command utility. This program allows you
to Select a startup script from several possible choices.
                Usage:

                SELECT NORMAL-BOOT BACKUP-BOOT VSCREEN-BOOT [etc..] [etc..]

You would put the above in startup-sequence and a requestor
would appear asking you to click on one of the included scripts.
This would be handy if you had several environments that you
                normally used.

Enjoy,

John

While we're on the subject of animations, does anyone have a copy
of "BoingThrows" squirreled away somewhere on the net. If you haven't
seen it, its a guy (robot?) shooting baskets. Nice.
It's supposed to be on one of the Fish disks, but I can't locate
it on the net where the other Fish disks are.
